Outstanding Staff Receive Awards
T
he annual SBS Staff Recognition Luncheon took place on April 23 at the
University Marriott. Approximately 125 staff members attended this year, the
largest number so far. Associate Dean Jim Shockey graciously accepted, once
again, to serve as master of ceremonies, and Jim Griffith, Research Associate at the UA
Southwest Studies Center, was the featured guest speaker. His presentation about the
Southwest was informative and delightful. He also announced that he would like to
revitalize “Tucson Meet Yourself,” an event that he started many years ago, and asked
for volunteers. Associate deans Beth Mitchneck and Diana Archangeli conducted the
traditional “table trivia” contest. The ten winners received polo shirts donated by the
Bureau of Applied Research in Anthropology (BARA).

Outstanding Staff members: Martha Castleberry, Judaic Studies; Bethany Ekegren,
Psychology; Lauren Johnson, Women’s Studies; and Phillip Nopper, Center for Middle Eastern Studies. Each
recipient received $300 and a plaque.
For planning this enjoyable event, thanks go to the 2003 Luncheon Planning Committee: Cherie McCollum,
Chair; Dawn Baugh, Luise Betterton, Alexis Hanham, Nancy Linafelter, and María Rodríguez.
Funding for the luncheon was provided by the SBS Dean’s Office. “Gracias” to Dean Ed Donnerstein for his

Retreat at Historic “Z” Mansion
T
he SBS Staff Retreat took place on May 21, 2003, at the
lovely Zellweger Mansion in downtown Tucson. The day
was filled with informational as well as entertaining
speakers, including Provost George Davis, Dean Ed
Donnerstein, Dr. Michael Dues, Barbara Williams, of the UA
Science Library, and Nancy Stiller, assistant director of the
Office of Academic Services. Our special guest speaker was
comedienne JoAnn Contorno, who kept us in stitches with her
motivational presentation.
There were many door prizes from various merchants
around town, including the Gaslight Theater, Trader Joe’s,
Gentle Ben’s, Tohono Chul Park, Chili’s, and La Fuente
Restaurant, to name a few.
The retreat was a great success. For those of you who
didn’t attend, I hope that you will consider attending next
year.
