Living Language and Literature Online provides dedicated support for all the

main awarding bodies’ specifications for A level English Language and English

Language and Literature through comprehensive exam and coursework sections

for each unit.

For a quick exploration of the key features and benefits of Living Language and

Literature Online, try answering the following questions using the hints and tips to

1. What are the main symbols used in transcripts?



Navigate to the ‘English Language’ section using the purple menu bar at the top

of the page. Choose ‘Investigating Language’ from the blue side navigation bar.

Click on the unit sub-heading ‘Transcribing’. The transcription symbols can be

found in the section ‘Using a different punctuation system’.

2. Give three examples of types of first-person texts.



Navigate to the ‘English Language and Literature’ section using the purple menu

bar at the top of the page. Open the unit ‘How Genres Work’ using the blue side

navigation bar. Click the ‘First person’ subheading to find examples of first

person texts including letters, emails and blogs.



3. Which 19th Century political philosopher expounded a theory of language

addressing issues such as ‘ownership and the apostrophe’?



Navigate to the ‘Extension Area’ using the purple menu bar at the top of the

page. Scroll down the menu on the left hand side to find a unit of information and

activities which explore Karl Marx’s Theory of Language.



4. How many interactive activities are available for teaching the English

Language topic ‘Creating Your Own Texts’?



Navigate to the ‘Interactive Activities’ section using the purple menu bar at the

top of the page. Scroll down to find the heading ‘Creating Your Own Texts’ where

the eight activities available are listed.



5. What is the definition of a quatrain?



Navigate to the ‘Glossary’ using the purple menu bar at the top of the page. From

the alphabet at the top of the page select ‘Q’. Quatrain is a four-line poetic

stanza. The Glossary can also be accessed via hyperlinks within the text.



6. Where can you find content for teaching the key linguistic concepts which

underpin the teaching of both English Language and Literature?



The Unit ‘Key Concepts for Studying Language’ can be accessed from both the

‘English Language’ and ‘English Language and Literature’ areas of the website,

using the blue navigation bar on the left hand side.
