About Gannane ry

Gannaane Ry is a non-profit, non-political organization formed in 2002 by Somalia people living in Finland
in response to the increasing need to participate in the improvement and rehabilitation of communities living
in Somalia. Somalia is in a grave humanitarian situation. Development especially in the education sector has
greatly suffered since the fall of the central government in 1991. Gannaane Ry, a non-governmental
Organization in Finland, has set forth to rehabilitate existing schools in El Adde area of the Gedo Region in
Somalia and subsequently encourage child education in both primary and secondary schools. Assistance
from Gannaane RY included the provision of school learning materials as well as support with staff salaries.
With budgetary support from the Finnish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Gannaane ry has rehabilitated one
primary and one secondary school in El Adde District. Currently there are a total of 604 pupils in both the
primary and secondary schools. The school hired and maintained 20 teachers to teach in the
primary division and a further 6 more to teach in the secondary division. This makes a total of 26
teaching staff. Division administrators head both the divisions who are at the same time teachers.
The school has a cleaner and a security guard. In addition, ARD Director and school program
officer are also part of the project staff. This brings the staff to a total of 30

The teaching and non-teaching staffs also fall into this category. The existence of the school has created a
source of employment and will continue to be so. As a result of this project, there were 32 students who have
graduated from the El-adde Secondary school and of whom 15 of them went on to further their education in
neighbouring countries.
