Directions: Use the periodic table in your book for this activity. You are going to use
colors to identify properties of the elements listed in the periodic table. Be sure NOT to
color any part of your table until you have read each step below completely. Make sure
you answer the analysis questions at the bottom!

-You must use a different color crayon for each step below. After completing each step,
make a key or legend below your table to indicate the colors you have chosen for
each property.

    1. Identify all the elements that are liquids at room temperature. Choose a color and
outline (trace) the blocks on your periodic table that correspond to those
        elements.
    2. Identify all elements that are gases at room temperature. Choose a color and
outline (trace) the blocks on your periodic table that correspond to those
elements. The remaining elements are solids at room temperature.
    3. Identify all synthetic (manmade) elements. Choose a dark color and make a large
dot in the center of those elements.
    4. Identify all the blocks of the Lanthanide Series. Choose a color and outline
(trace) the blocks of these elements.
    5. Identify all the blocks of the Actinide Series. Choose a color and outline (trace)
        the blocks of these elements.
    6. Choose black or some dark color to draw in the staircase that is used to separate
        metals from nonmetals.
    7. Identify all metalloids. Choose a color and outline (trace) the blocks of these
        elements.
    8. Identify all nonmetals. Choose a light color and completely color all blocks
corresponding to these elements. (Include metalloids on this side of the staircase
because they have been identified in step 6).
    9. Identify all metals. Choose a light color and completely color all blocks
corresponding to these elements. (Include metalloids on this side of the staircase).
    10. Use arrows and show the direction of increasing metallic and nonmetallic
properties as done in the periodic table in your book.

Analysis and Conclusion:
Answer these questions on separate paper.
   1. Write the name and chemical symbol of the elements that are liquids at room
      temperature.
   2. How many elements are gases at room temperature?
   3. Write the name of the group that contains only gases.
   4. Write the name and chemical symbol of 8 metalloids.
   5. Choose one answer.
The majority of elements are (metals, nonmetals, metalloids) and are (liquids, solids,
   gases) at room temperature.
