With proper logistics, we will run all 3 classes in one day but count on it being a long day. The UT class would be first, the
FL class next, and those waiting to do the shooting portion could attend the OR class. That depends in part on how many
want to take the OR class and how well people shoot. Please note that you have to apply in person to get the OR permit
but there are some sheriffs friendly to non-residents getting the OR permit. OR is a 'may issue' not a 'shall issue' state for
non-residents. A compelling purpose is required which could be business related or one's life is endangered, etc.
The cost of the UT class is $90, the FL class is $50, and the OR class is $20. The UT fee includes one fingerprint card and
two photographs (one could be used for FL). Those prices represent a savings of $55 to the student over taking the
classes individually. FL requires that the fingerprints be taken by a law enforcement agency.
The logistics usually work something like:
- Fingerprinting and photos start at 8 AM.
- UT lecture starts at 9 AM, completes roughly 1 PM.
- Sign / stamp applications for those folks who only want UT permit.
- Start FL class by 2 PM, lecture is about 1 hour, then move to the range. Currently, the test is a total of 15 shots, in 3
strings of 5 from 3, 5, and 7 yards respectively. Each string is on its own 8.5x11 inch piece of paper. All shots must land
on the paper. The shots will be fired from the low/threat ready position. I may change the test slight to flow more
smoothly for a large number of people, meaning determine a way to reduce the amount of target changes and such. But,
the test would be roughly the same degree of difficulty as described. Gun safety will be judged as well, students must
keep their fingers off the trigger except when firing and the gun pointed in a safe direction, etc. No more than 3 chances
will be given to pass. No refunds will be given for a student's failure to shoot safely and accurately.
- Sign / stamp applications for those folks who only want UT and FL.
- The OR class could run concurrently with the FL shoot if there is significant waiting because it is about an hour. Or, it
could run afterwards, depending on how many people want to take it and such.
- Sign / stamp applications for those folks who want UT, FL, and OR.
If all goes well, we should be completed by 6 PM. But it really depends on how well people shoot.
Students should bring:
- Eye / ear protection - at minimum, ear plugs (ear muff protection is even better) and safety glasses.
- Clothing appropriate for the weather conditions & a baseball style cap with brim.
- The unloaded gun they will use for the shooting portion of the test along with 50 rounds of ammunition for said gun.
- Note taking materials.
- Lunch, snacks and drinks for the entire day.
- A valid government issued photo ID.
Prior to the class students must notify me of any medical condition or medications they are taking that could affect their
ability to shoot safely. I would ask that they refrain from taking any medication that would alter their ability to shoot
safely.
