SAFEGUARDING AND PROMOTING CHILDREN’S WELFARE
LOSS OR ABDUCTION POLICY AND PROCEDURE
It is the aim of this policy to inform staff that children cannot protect themselves and have
the right to be protected, especially when more vulnerable in the Pre-School setting or on an
outing. For the protection of children in the care of Pre-School, security strategies will be in
place to minimise the risk of loss or abduction.
The Chair and Health & Safety Officer and Playleader are responsible for:
Drawing up risk assessment forms for arrival at and departure from the Pre-School, and
for outings. The Committee and the Playleader will approve these forms.
The Committee and Playleader are responsible for:
Ascertaining during Admission procedures who has legal parental responsibility for the
child.
The Playleader is responsible for:
Obtaining written consent from the parent should another adult collect the child from
Pre-School (where practical; verbal consent may be acceptable on some occasions).
Ensuring that the child’s personal details are kept locked in the filing cabinet.
Completing risk assessments that are made prior to arrival and departure at Pre-School
and outings.
Ensuring the register – with Emergency contact details – and the mobile phone – charged
and turned on - are taken on any outing no matter how small.
All Staff are responsible for asking visitors to sign the Visitors Book and challenging any
unknown visitors.
If a child is missing during a session all adults/staff must follow the procedure below:
Inform the Playleader, if not already aware, of the situation, who will then gather the
Play Assistant, parent helper and children together on the reading mat and will mark the
children present against the register.
The Playleader will institute a search of the immediate area i.e. the building and outside
location, whilst ensuring that the other children are adequately supervised.
Payhembury Pre-School
Formulate a detailed description of the child and its clothing, and circulate to all those

If the child is not found after 15-20 minutes inform the police and parents.
Inform the Chair, who will contact Ofsted and the PLA.
Complete an Incident form and a report as soon as possible and send a copy to Ofsted.
If a child is missing during an outing the Playleader will follow the Procedure agreed in the
outing risk assessment, based on the procedure above. The Chair will be informed, and the
