Positive Behaviour Policy

Behaviour within Audlem St James’ Primary School is firmly based upon mutual
respect, the quality of relationships sought and the close partnership between
parents and staff. The ultimate aim with all our children is for them to achieve self
behaviour, to develop a sense of responsibility, trustworthiness and to have pride in
At Audlem St James’ school good behaviour is expected at all times. We believe that
good behaviour is essential for the school to enable effective teaching and learning to
take place and we use many different strategies to encourage this.
All staff at Audlem School are committed to a whole school Positive Behaviour Policy.
This sets out very clear rules and standards of acceptable behaviour, a system of
rewards for individuals as well as the whole class and a system of consequences for
when inappropriate and unacceptable behaviour continues.
This policy is to be followed by all adults at Audlem School – teaching staff, teaching
assistants and midday assistants.
Our School Rules
Each classroom displays five rules
1. Aim high and never give up;
2. Following instructions will keep me safe;
3. Show respect to ourselves and other children;
4. Be kind helpful and polite;
5. Good behaviour brings its own rewards;
These rules will help us to enjoy our school and be proud of it.
We believe that praise and encouragement go a long way towards building self-
esteem and the positive mental attitudes of children. It is with this in mind that we
use a variety of reward systems in school.
a) A hierarchy or rewards
1. Praise, praise, praise.
2. Team points.
3. “Brilliant” slips.
4. Merit stickers which are then collected in a Reward book. Once this is half full,
they get a mention in assembly. Once it is complete they get a special
certificate in assembly and a letter sent home, from the Headteacher, in the

Each teacher will make their own arrangements for monitoring the number of class
certificates each child in their class receives to celebrate the children’s positive
b) Celebration Assembly
In addition to the above we also have a Star of the Class Book in which teachers
write down the name of a child in their class who has been outstanding during the
week and the reason. Children can be in the Star of the Class Book for a variety of
reasons – from being well behaved and doing impeccable work, to helping others and
being polite. The reason is written in the book and, during a Friday assembly, the
names of the Star of the Class children are read out, they come to the front and
receive a special certificate. Children listed in the Star of the Class Book are
mentioned in the weekly newsletter sent home to parents. This helps motivate the
children, those in particular who find positive behaviour difficult. At this assembly
swimming awards, badges and any internal or external rewards that the children
might have received will also be mentioned.
In order to promote positive behaviour by the whole class, for example in assembly or
for lining up, one class each week will be awarded the ‘Good Class Cup’ during the
Celebration Assembly. The winning class is mentioned in the weekly newsletter sent
home to parents.
c) Captain’s Table
In order to promote good manners and positive behaviour in the dining hall, the Cook
and her assistant choose two or three children a week to sit at the “Captain’s Table”.
The children chosen are mentioned in the Celebration Assembly and they then eat
their lunch with the Headteacher at Friday lunchtime. The Captain’s Table children
are mentioned in the weekly newsletter sent home to parents.
d) Team Points
Every child belongs to a team- Alder, Lime, Oak or Rowan.
To reward good work or behaviour the children are given Team Points by their
teachers. Teachers may give up to a maximum of three points at any one time. Team
Points are collected by a Y6 pupil every Friday afternoon and totalled by a Y6 pupil.
Scores are announced in Monday assemblies. The Team Points result is mentioned in
the weekly newsletter sent home to parents. At the end of term, the children from
the team with the most winning weeks are allowed to have an own clothes day as a
reward. Targets may be set for the teams to encourage positive behaviour and will
be rewarded accordingly.
Children who choose not to follow the rules must follow a hierarchy of consequences:
1. Verbal warning
2. Second warning, when the child’s initials are written on the class board.
3. Removal from seat. The child sits alone for a set period of time.
4. Sent to Mrs. Nolan-Burnitt (or in her absence Mr Wilken) where the child is
given a detention. The detention is recorded in the Detention Book and means
the child misses the whole of the next available morning break. During the
detention the child stands in the Hall under the supervision of a member of
5. Child’s parent or carer is contacted to discuss the child’s behaviour.
6. Child’s parent or carer is contacted to collect the child from school and to
further discuss their child’s behaviour
The consequences are applied by the staff taking into account the children’s maturity
and individual needs.
More serious breaches of school rules can result in an instant detention e.g.
fighting, bullying, being rude to an adult. Children requiring additional support
with their behaviour will, be given ‘Star Charts’ in consultation with parents.
The above hierarchy of consequences relate to one day only. Every new day is a
IBPs are also written for those children who are consistently using inappropriate
behaviour and parents are involved.
Outside agencies may also be asked to provide support, where necessary.
As a last resort a child could be suspended or excluded from school in
accordance with Cheshire East County Council Policy. Parents would be fully
informed of the process.
