Doing What it Takes
by Tzivia Gaba as told to Stef Williams
It was early 1947 and the largest Pennsylvania snowstorm anyone could remember. Joe Gaba and some other young men had just finished a special mission at the pier in Hoboken, NJ, acting on their love of what was soon to become the State of Israel, doing their small part. Afterward, the men were driving back to their Pennsylvania Hachsharah, their kibbutz, where they were living before making aliyah, but their truck could no longer push through the twenty-five inches of heavy, wet snow. They got out and walked through the near blizzard conditions. In utter disbelief, they found an open tavern and they were even able to purchase Greyhound bus tickets to ride back to their kibbutz. However, in the meantime, on the Hoboken pier, their crate marked “Farm Machinery” headed for Palestine was accidentally dropped and found to be full of dynamite, stunning the FBI. So, the FBI’s search for Joe, Tzivia Gaba’s husband, z”l, and the other men, began. State Troopers and the FBI soon came across the abandoned truck, and following the leads, the FBI eventually showed up at Tzivia and Joe’s in the middle of the night, to arrest Joe and some of the men. They spent several nights in jail. Fortunately, with the assistance of Hechalutz (The Zionist Youth Movement), and Harry S Truman, Joe and the men were soon released. However, as part of Joe’s punishment, his passport was taken away, a punishment that lasted for the next fifteen years. Although they knew it would take longer than they had originally anticipated, Joe and Tzivia would eventually get to Israel. Joe’s passport was returned in 1963, and they took the first Kansas City Pilgrimage sponsored by Beth Shalom to Israel. Tzivia soon hopes to travel again to Israel for her fourteenth trip to visit her nieces and nephews who have always lived in Israel. We are thankful for the efforts of people like Joe and Tzivia and their families, who believed in the State of Israel and did what it took to see their dreams realized.

off the bima
These last two months as your rabbi will be bittersweet in so many ways. Saying good-bye, tying up loose ends and packing up a study will be difficult in many ways. But I/we look forward to what is ahead of us and I, especially, look forward to the new challenges of my JCRB/AJC position as well as my work with the St. Luke’s Hospital Group. Again, Linda and I want to thank you. We thank all of you for 19 wonderful and exciting years. We thank those who were able to make the dinner on March 30th. It was a truly memorable evening. We thank those who worked on the event—you did a marvelous job—and, todah rabbah to, Jeanette, z”l, for leaving a very distinct handprint on that night. Lastly, we thank the many who have contributed to the Rabbinic Chair Endowment and to those who will in the future. This will help ensure the strength of Beth Shalom for years to come. While we are only a few years into the 21st Century, we are getting a glimpse of how Jewish life will be different. When I entered Rabbinical School in 1968, my class was all male and every one of us had a Jewish mother. In the ensuing 40 years, women have become a distinct portion of each class, gays and lesbians can now be ordained and in each class there is an individual or two who were not born into a Jewish family. While we continue to emphasize dating and marrying within the Jewish community (even while working to
Changes That Make Us Stronger As a People
strengthen our Keruv Project towards the interfaith couples,) we must recognize and accept those who have chosen a path within Judaism other than through birth. This is especially true when that individual made that choice in his/her youth and grew as a serious and committed Jew. Such is the case of our new Senior Rabbi, Robert Tobin. That commitment was clearly recognized by the Seminary when he applied to its Rabbinical program. It was strong enough for him to be ordained and to work as a congregational rabbi in Baltimore, MD and Westport, CT before coming to Kansas City. That is the commitment he demonstrates each day of his life and what he exudes when he works with his congregants. It is that message of living a deeply Jewish life which he will teach to the children and adults of Beth Shalom. That change in American Jewish life is a powerful one. It strengthens our fabric by bringing new and deeply committed individuals to our peoplehood. Like the 40 years of the Wilderness changed the Israelites and readied them for the return to the Land of Canaan, these last 40 years have changed our society and us. With these kinds of changes, we continue to grow and to become stronger. As we say each time we conclude a Book of the Torah— hazak, hazak, v’nethazek.

Minyan Maker PM
Our morning Minyan Maker AM system, now in its second year, has had a major impact on the viability of the morning minyan. The same can be done now for the evening service. Minyan Maker PM is up and running and awaits you to log on and sign up. The process is identical to that of the AM system. If you are already registered for AM, just log on through the Beth Shalom website and go to PM and sign up. If you would prefer us to sign you up, please contact the Ritual Office and we will pass your name and information along to Marlene Katz, PM administrator. Please help us as often as possible. Monday and Wednesday evenings are the thinnest. The minyan is the backbone of the shul. Please do your best. Todah rabbah in advance.

Why Do We…?
Question: What inspired the
design of the Israeli flag? The flag of The State of Israel includes two blue stripes on a white background with a Shield (Star) of David (in Hebrew: Magen Dovid) in the center. This design was first displayed in Rishon-LeZion (First in Zion) in 1885 and was also used at the First Zionist Congress in 1897. It is inspired by the tallit (the prayer shawl with blue stripes worn by Jews during prayer) as a symbol of the religious foundation of the State. The blue color is similar to techelet, which is described in the bible. The Star of David has been a common symbol of the People of Israel from Biblical times. The flag was adopted officially on October 28, 1948, 25 Tishre 5709, by the Speaker of the Provisional Council of State.

Celebrate With Our Confirmands
Upon completion of the 10th grade, Beth Shalom students plan and participate in a Confirmation ceremony to celebrate the culmination of their formal education at The Polsky Religious School and the Community High School of Jewish Studies. The Confirmation class of 5768 invites the congregation to join them and their families for a Confirmation program Sunday, June 8, 7 p.m. in the sanctuary at the Wornall Campus. Following the program and Shavuot service, there will be a dessert reception sponsored by the parents of the following Confirmands: Brandon Barouh, son of Steven Barouh and Lori Barouh Anna Carl, daughter of Lawrence and Nancy Carl Micah Friedman, son of Frank and Sondra Friedman Abby Fromm, daughter of Jeff and Rhonda Fromm Laura Fromm, daughter of Jeff and Rhonda Fromm Roni Grant, daughter of Robert and Evie Grant Zachary Mallin, son of Jeffrey and Sharon Mallin Brian Myers, son of Alan and Allison Myers Stephanie Pollack, daughter of Stuart Pollack and Roberta Pollack Matthew Shapiro, son of David and Jill Shapiro Avi Sonnenschein, son of Ken and Sheila Sonnenschein
L-R: Abby Fromm, Roni Grant, Stephanie Pollack, Brandon Barouh, Matt Shapiro, Micah Friedman, Laura Fromm, Brian Myers, Anna Carl & Avi Sonnenschein
The What and Why of Confirmation
Confirmation began in the 19th century with German Reform congregations that believed thirteen (Bar Mitzvah) was too young to be ushered into Jewish “adulthood.” Many Conservative congregations gradually adopted Confirmation as a culminating ceremony for formal education several years after Bar/Bat Mitzvah. Confirmation is generally held on or around Shavuot. Just as our ancestors stood at Sinai to receive the Torah, so is Confirmation a time when Jews confirm their membership in the Jewish people and accept the responsibility of Torah and of lives filled with Jewish values.
A Successful Year in Review
In the coming weeks, classes at the Polsky Religious School will be ending for the year. It is a time when we become self-reflective and consider, “How have we done this year? What did we do well and what can we do better?” This year there was a change in the program for students in grades 3-5 that came Naomie Scharf and Davi Sher show off their project during their Monday Journeys Class to be known as Family Journeys. From all indications we have had, it has met the needs of our families and accomplished what we hoped it would. There were Important Dates: a number of options for our families, with many of them choosing to have their Ram Noar Israeli Musicians children attend the Monday Journeys program. The students had a wide selection Monday, May 12, 5:30 p.m. of classes to choose from, selecting a new class every seven weeks, and they have had 2nd-5th students and parents a great time. It was rewarding to see students in these grades making new friends. Because of the nature of the program, we were able to include Beth Shalom Hyman 3rd grade Hag HaSiddur Brand Hebrew Academy 3rd-5th grade students in these Monday classes. Wednesday, May 14, 5 p.m. Now is also the time when many families are looking at programs for next year. You are our best form of publicity. If you know of families who you think would benefit from our school, tell them what you like about us and suggest they come in for a visit. There is always room for more families. Last Day of Classes Sunday, May 18 Ending program for Pre-K thru 5th students and parents, 11:30 a.m. followed by Mitzvah Day activities

straight talk
Since this is my last column as President of the congregation, it is fitting at this time to reflect on some accomplishments over the past two years and to also make you aware of a major problem we are currently facing. There have been many achievements, including the hiring of Rabbi Robert Tobin to be our next Senior Rabbi, restructuring our religious school, establishing weekly online communications with our congregants, beginning a summer camp program for our pre-school aged children, and placing our cemetery on a sounder financial footing. We have also become a warmer and more welcoming congregation with more Shabbat greeters, board member calls to our congregants, and various changes at our Shabbat morning services. Unfortunately though, as some of our elderly members have passed away over the last several years our membership numbers and dues income have declined, but our staff expenses have not decreased in line with our reduction in dues revenue. For the past two and a half years, we have also been operating two campuses, at additional cost. The result is that our total expenses have increased faster than our total income. In 2006 our bank loan was $600,000, and it was $680,000 last year. This year we anticipate it will peak at approximately $900,000. We cannot keep increasing our debt forever. Some changes will need to be made for the next fiscal year to slow down, if not reverse the increase in our debt level. We will need to do what we can in the short term, but the full solution will not come until we sell our Wornall campus, and begin increasing our membership to balance our budget or even generate a surplus. These last two years have been not only very challenging, but also very rewarding in many ways. I see many positive changes at Beth Shalom in the coming years from the foundation we are laying.

Jeanette Wishna
We note with great sadness the death of Jeanette Wishna, chair of the Beth Shalom Foundation and past president of the congregation (2002-04). Jeanette passed away at her home on April 7, 2008 after a brief illness. A native of Kansas City, she graduated from Wellesley College with a B.A. in Economics. She worked in Washington D.C. as part of the White House staff until marrying Sheldon Wishna. In 1974 Jeanette returned to Kansas City and began a new career as the consummate volunteer. She served in numerous community leadership positions and was the 3rd woman to be president of Congregation Beth Shalom. One of her last projects was the redesign of this newsletter, The Scroll. With wide-ranging interests, Jeanette’s greatest loves were her husband, her son Victor, her family, Jewish learning, the Jewish Community, politics, theater, and sports. As Rabbi Cohen remarked at her funeral, Jeanette was an ideal example of an Ashyet Chayil, a Woman of Valor. Our condolences go out to Sheldon, Victor and her family. We will all miss her. May her memory be for a blessing.

May is Full of Fun Endings!
Spring has finally arrived, the flowers are blooming and an incredible year is coming to an end with much activity! May is going to be busy, challenging and great fun! Baby caterpillars will arrive this month and the children will be able to watch the baby caterpillars grow, spin chrysalis and then turn into beautiful butterflies. (If you have never watched this process, come in and take a look. It is fascinating!) When the metamorphosis has occurred, the children will release a full-grown butterfly from their little fingers! The school is going to be filled with all sorts of special people, besides our Friday, May 30, 6 p.m. students, on two wonderful Grandparent/ Lamar Campus Special Person Day events scheduled for May 1 and May 8. Also, we are celebrating Israel’s 60th birthday by having a carnival Max Gershon, Dayna Gershon, Sadie Gershon and Susie Greenberg during the at which the children will learn all about Israel. We will have several booths, manned RFNS Purim Parade by parents, which will teach our children about different aspects of Israel. Our year ends with a picnic, complete with bouncy obstacle course, pony rides, laughter and many happy memories. However, don’t forget Camp Beth Shalom begins on June 23! Only a few spots remain in the three and four year old age groups. Call the office for information on session availability.

KCUSY Makes Impression on Region
Spring Kallah was held in Mason City, Iowa April 10-13. At this convention the 2007-08 Regional Executive Board stepped down and the 2008-09 Regional Executive Board was elected. We are very proud to report that David Helfand is the new Regional President and Andrew Azorsky is the new Regional Executive Vice President! KCUSY won several awards at Spring Kallah including Best Purim Activity for our “Game of KCUSY” Carnival, and Best Kadima Bonding Program for the “Puppy Chow Party.” KCUSY was one of the few chapters to be selected as a “Chapter of Excellence.” We are very proud of last year’s regional board members, Scott Bratt, Emma Eisemann and David Helfand, and are looking forward to seeing all David and Andrew accomplish in the coming year!

Legacy Endowments
Our grandparents made plans to ensure that the synagogue would be here for us and our children. Do you in turn wish to help ensure that Beth Shalom will be here for future generations to come? Do you want to ensure that the religious school, the preschool, and some of our other educational programs will be here for them? We each can help do so by leaving a lasting legacy in the form of an estate bequest of a fraction of our estate. No gift is too small. Tax law provisions even allow us to make gifts now and enjoy income as long as it is needed. Your financial advisor can explain what structure will work best for you. We can help acquaint you with our various program areas. For more information contact Joel Krichiver, executive director, 913-647-7293 or jkrichiver@bethshalomkc.org.
Email Addresses
If you are not receiving congregational emails and would like to, please send an email to us at nlevitan@bethshalomkc.org and we will put you on the list. We will send you the weekly email blast with up-to-date news and occasional special messages. Our messages are scanned for viruses and we will never share your email address with any outside organization.
