“Behold, I send My messenger before Your Face, who shall prepare Your way...” (Matthew 11:10)
Volume 7, Issue 9 St. John the Baptist Greek Orthodox Church, Las Vegas, NV October 2009
Beloved in Christ:
From Even though the computer in my head has its memory lapses since I turned 50 last year,
Father there is one saying regarding aging that I amazingly remember: “Age is relative – when you’re over the
John hill, you pick up speed.” So far, I am admittedly – thank God – in excellent health, but still, as I
approach my 51st year of existence I am cognizant that I have definitely passed the middle-age
mark, and in addition to occasional forgetfulness, I am picking up speed with regard to aches and pains,
graying, wrinkles, pounds, hearing and eye-sight loss – and the race to the grave!
In the same vein, when it comes to anniversaries, mindful of our human fragility, we should all realize
that it is only by the grace of God that we have lived or existed long enough to celebrate the higher number
that each passing year presents. While this is true for birthdays, marriages, professions, businesses
(including hotels and casinos), countries, cities and monuments, a Church Anniversary – particularly that of
an Orthodox Christian Church – must be viewed in a very different light. Many Orthodox will proudly
proclaim that our Church is 2,000 years-old, dating back to Pentecost Sunday in 33 AD, yet this is only
partially true. Even as Pentecost marks the date when the Apostles were empowered by the Holy Spirit to
bring all nations to the Truth of Jesus Christ, the early Fathers agree regarding the age of the Church that
“she was created before all things; therefore she is elderly, and for her sake the world was
formed.” (The Shepherd of Hermas, Vision Two)
Understanding that the Church is not just a physical, but a spiritual community – an icon of the
heavenly Kingdom, and the means through which we join the saints and angels in glorifying God – we must
have a deeper appreciation of what the 50th Anniversary means for all of us who are members, past and
present, of St. John the Baptist Greek Orthodox Church. While we can definitely affirm that our parish was
established in Las Vegas in March 1959, the date we received our Charter from the Greek Orthodox
Archdiocese, those who are still around or who have done the research know that the formation of this
community started years before, when a handful of faithful people were led by a love for their Faith to come
together as Greek Orthodox Christians. This is how the Holy Spirit works: in ways pass human
understanding and even in the least likely places (like the middle of the Mojave Desert), the soul is moved
with the desire to know Christ, to grow in Him, to gather with others in His Name and to nurture and pass
this love for Him to future generations.
The Golden Anniversary of St. John the Baptist Greek Orthodox Church should by all means be a
celebration of our existence for 50 years and the acknowledgement of all our accomplishments over the past
five decades. But, as Greek Orthodox Christians, we must be aware that this Anniversary means so much
more: our well-established presence in this city and our spiritual participation in the life of our Church are
proof that the Holy Spirit has been at work and continues to touch new souls in Las Vegas and throughout
the world. In honoring the past, we must always remember that we are part of the larger, ancient, Apostolic
Church – that has its roots even before the world was formed. Looking to the future, we should be mindful
that, as the local parish of the larger Holy Church of Christ, our goal with every worship service,
sacramental celebration and parish ministry is ultimately the salvation of our souls and eternal participation
in the Kingdom of God.
May Christ our God, Who has blessed our parish abundantly for 50-plus years, always preserve us,
renew us, unite us, sanctify us and direct us until that Day when we join Him eternally in His Kingdom!
Love in Christ,
The Desert Messenger

Orthodox Bookstore
Hello from the Bookstore!
The Orthodox Church is the place here on Earth that we come together to worship the living God. As
with all things that the Lord Himself touches, the Church reflects the beautiful presence of God here among
us. He is present in the architecture, the iconography, the incense, the chanting, the prayers, and is alive in
His saints. When we come to Church, we experience the beauty of God’s house. But each of our homes is
also a little Church for us and our families. The Bookstore of an Orthodox Church makes available to all the
beautiful treasures of our Church that we can take home and help transform our environment away from
Church.
Please come and see the many items our Bookstore offers, and take part of the Church home with you.
Place some of these treasures around your home and allow yourself to be reminded of God’s presence and love
for you. We all have a relationship with our God. His love for us is constant and unlimited. We are called to
return the love that He gives us so generously, and when we do . . . guess what? He gives us even more love!
This month, check out a delightful movie called The Monastery, Mr. Vig and the Nun, which tells the story
of a man who wants to donate some land to build a Russian Orthodox monastery in Denmark.

With the support of so many in our community members, we have successfully completed our 37th
Annual Las Vegas Greek Food Festival. The Lord blessed us with wonderful weather and an excited, though
smaller crowd of 22,102, all of whom enjoyed themselves. In the coming weeks, once the financial details have
been reviewed, a report will be submitted to the community. Additionally, we will have a presentation at the
November Parish Assembly detailing many aspects of this year's Festival.
We all know that without the support and hard work of our community, the Greek Food Festival
could not succeed. While it is impossible and risky to try and name everyone who donated of their time,
talents and treasures, I must recognize five very key people for their outstanding support, fellowship and
teamwork. Without their efforts over many months, the Festival would not have been able to run as
smoothly as it actually did. I will forever be grateful to them for their love and encouragement. The five key
members of the 37th Annual Las Vegas Greek Food Festival Core Committee were:
Marina Adamy William Carrico
Chris Kourafas George Nikols
Peter Papas
Lastly, it is also important that I recognize Janice Leavitt for her tireless efforts, long hours and
assistance in the coordination of many complex facets of preparing for this year’s Festival.

Church School
Hi Everyone! The Greek Food Festival was wonderful, and I was so happy to see so many of our young
people working. I know that everyone worked so hard, and this is why we were able to have such a
successful event.
We are off to a great start! We have 107 students registered in our program. Please make sure that
you have enrolled and paid the $5 supply fee for your children. We will not let the children enter the
classroom without having a current registration on them. Church School Registration Forms can be picked
up from the bulletin boards, or from your child’s teacher.
If you would like to see what your child is doing, please check out our bulletin boards; they are loaded
with useful information. It is always best to expand what your child is learning in school so they have a rich
and fulfilling spiritual life.
On November 1 we will not have class due to Nevada Day; it will be Family Worship Sunday. We
encourage all families to come and worship together.
Please call or e-mail me if you have any questions or concerns.

Youth Choir News
The New Ecclesiastical and School Year has started on a great note (HA HA)! It was so nice hearing
your wonderful voices on September 13. Thanks to all who participated in chanting the Divine Liturgy.
Here is the schedule for all Youth Choir members for the rest of the year: Sunday, October 11; Sunday
November 8; and Sunday, December 13. Please arrive early at 9:40 am in the front right pew.
There will be a few changes for the rest of the year: Since the FDF Choir had the honor of winning the
Sweepstakes Award at last year’s competition, we have the opportunity to present a special performance at
the 2010 FDF Culture Night on Saturday, January 15. The FDF Culture Night features the winners of the
previous year’s Sweepstakes Awards recipients in both the Dance and Choral divisions; we are the only choral
group that won the coveted award. However, with this comes much extra practice.
Due to the fact that the FDF Choir has two shows to perform (for Culture Night and the
Competition), and that FDF this coming year is one month earlier, the Sunday Choir rehearsals will only be
for the participants of the FDF Choir. Others can participate to learn new music, if desired. Choir practice
will be every Sunday after Church School, from 12:15-12:45 pm in the Choir Loft. We will not practice on
Sunday, October 18, because Metropolitan Gerasimos will be at our parish for our 50th Anniversary.
New members will be encouraged to join the Youth Choir after FDF in January 2010. During this time
we will be nearing the Lenten Season, which is a great time to have new members join.
I thank God for this great and exciting opportunity for music in our Youth Ministry program, and I am
also grateful for all the support from our parents and our parish for this wonderful endeavor for our children.
Love in Christ, Presvytera Maria
HOPE and JOY
Thank you to everyone who participated in voting for October’s event! And, the winner is . . . The
Natural History Museum. On Saturday, October 10 we will meet at the main entrance at 1:00 pm. This will
give us time to explore the museum before the live shark feeding at 2:00 pm – yes, real sharks! After that, we
can visit the dinosaurs and Africa! We need 10 people for the discount and a guided museum tour, so please
RSVP as soon as you can. Call Sharon at (702) 292-0850.

GOYA
Once again GOYA will be going to Red Rock for our annual Hike, hosted by the Hernquist Family on
Saturday, October 10. We will be meeting at the Chevron gas station on Charleston and Town Center at
9:00 am. Please call or text us to let us know if you will be attending or if you need a ride. After the hike we
will be going to lunch at a nearby fast food place so please bring money, and don’t forget your water, too.
Our second event will be on Saturday, October 24. We will meet at 8:30 am at St. Michael
Antiochian Orthodox Church (5719 East Judson Aves, Las Vegas 89156) to feed the homeless. This will be a
joint project with other Orthodox teens in the valley. We will prepare about 400 meals to feed the less
fortunate who live in the streets of Owens and Main. We will deliver the meals no later than 11:45am. After,
we will go eat at Farmer Boys restaurant for lunch and election of officers. Please make sure that you wear
comfortable shoes and bring money for lunch.
Please call or text us to RSVP, or with any questions.

Greek Folk Dance
Practices continue on Sundays, Tuesdays and now Fridays (see schedule on p. 15). The dancers have a
lot to learn and little time to do so before FDF, so please be on time and ready to dance. Parents, please join us
for an informational meeting on Sunday, October 11 at 12:30 pm.
We still have Entertainment Books on sale for $30 each through the end of October.
Also, please save the date for our 3rd Annual Horepse Dance Workshop on November 20-22. We will
have our popular Glendi on Saturday night of the Horepse weekend! More details to follow.

Congratulations to everyone on a job well done at the Greek Food Festival again this year. It's so
wonderful to see our community come together and work so hard for the good of our Church.
Since we've all worked so hard, I think it's time for some fun and relaxation. With that in mind Mike
and I will be hosting Orthodox Family Fellowship at our home on Saturday, October 10 at 5:30 pm. OFF
gatherings are a great time for parents and children to mingle and ask Father John questions regarding our
Faith. So please bring your favorite dish to share and come ready to have some fun. Call Mike or Tami
Stefanatos for directions at (702) 458-0266. Hope to see you there.

Once again we find ourselves close to another starting point – for Stewardship, that is. On Sunday,
November 15, we have a chance to re-evaluate our Stewardship commitment and our pledges during our
annual Stewardship Sunday service. Traditionally this is a Sunday when we bring our updated Stewardship
pledge card to Church enclosed in an envelope and, led by Father John and the Parish Council, we submit our
commitment to the Church during the passing of the trays.
Can we really put a price tag on all of our abundant blessings as a community of Orthodox Christians?
Never! We can never give back all God has given to us. However, Stewardship, like other events built within
our Orthodox calendar by God’s grace, is a form of discipline. Just as fasting, daily prayer time, and
maintaining Orthodoxy as a way of life are all disciplinary to the core, our financial commitment to our
Church is a form of discipline that allows for His works to continue through clergy and laity.
In preparation for our annual commitment, please take time to prayerfully decide upon your pledge so
we can be united in returning our 2010 Pledge Cards on Stewardship Sunday, November 15! The 2010
Stewardship Packets will be sent to all on our mailing list in late October.
Please continue to direct all questions regarding Stewardship to John Karas at (702) 219-5057. From
now until December 31 we will be transferring Stewardship responsibilities to the new co-chairmen.

The Way of the Lord
St. Gerasimos the New Ascetic of Cephalonia was born in the village of Trikkala in
the Peloponnesus. As a young adult, he became a monk on the island of Zakynthos. On the
Holy Mountain he became a schema monk and studied with the ascetics of Mt Athos.
Receiving a blessing from the Elders, the monk went to Jerusalem to worship at the Life-
bearing Tomb of the Savior. After visiting many holy places in Jerusalem, Mount Sinai,
Antioch, Damascus, Alexandria and Egypt, he returned to Jerusalem where he became a lamp-
lighter at the Sepulcher of the Lord. The monk was ordained a Deacon and then a Priest by the
Patriarch Germanos (1534-1579 AD) of Jerusalem.
St. Gerasimos maintained the discipline of an ascetic. For solitude, he withdrew to the
Jordan, where he spent 40 days without respite. Having received the Patriarch's blessing for a
life of silence, St. Gerasimos withdrew to Zakynthos in solitude, eating only vegetation. After five years he was inspired
to go the island of Cephalonia, where he lived in a cave. He restored a Church at Omala, and he founded a women's
monastery where he lived in constant toil and vigil for 30 years. He prayed on bent knees stretched out on the ground.
For his exalted life, he was granted the miraculous gift of being able to heal the sick and cast out unclean spirits.
At 71 years of age, St. Gerasimos knew that he would soon die. He gave his blessing to the nuns and peacefully
fell asleep in the Lord on August 15, 1579 AD. Two years later, his grave was opened (on October 20) and his holy relics
were found fragrant and incorrupt with a healing power. ~ Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of Australia Webpage
