The Veterinary Centre is a farmer owned co-operative with a Board of Directors elected from among
its farmer members. The “return” for being a member and supporting the business includes:
1. Better service delivered by passionate vets and support staff
2. Business profits are reinvested in the business – education, technology and equipment
3. Being an incorporated society provides a significant cost benefit which is passed onto members
4. Members own the business and can influence its direction through the elected board

Useful hints to help with calf rearing in many situations
or common mistakes we see when we are called in to help with a rearing problem
• Collect calves from the paddock twice a day – calves must get colostrum within the first
six-ten hours of life for good immunity to develop. The cost in time to collect them is more
than offset by the savings once the calves are in the shed.
• Ensure all calves get colostrum, even if it means tubing every calf that comes into the barn
(give 10% of body weight).
• Use a thermometer to monitor calves.
• Don’t dilute milk – it prevents curding in the gut. It is much more useful to alternate milk
and electrolyte feeds to scouring calves, keeping them at least two hours apart.
• Start with a strong healthy calf.
• Keep milk lines as short as possible to prevent build up of bacteria.
• Use individual/compartmentalized feeders up to three weeks to identify slow feeders. 67
• Keep bobbies separate.
