games, it was really tough for me. But pain is kind of part of our job.”
What makes this defenseman tick, why play in all of those games without a game off? “But hockey, it's my job. It's what I like to do and I
like to be in the game and I like to play. I was feeling, you know, one practice, second practice, I was feeling not really good. But I was
feeling all right and I could do all of the things I had to do on the ice, so I keep playing. In the future if I can play, and if I can help the
team, I'm going to be ready for those games.”
So does he frequent the Tim Hortons donut shops? “Yeah, every time I'm in Canada, it's kind of my favorite coffee shop where to go.
Every time when I'm there, you know, I try to get some coffee because I love coffee. And in America I drink Starbucks, but when I'm in
Canada, I always go to Tim Horton's to get some coffee from there.”

2011-12 Fantasy Overview
^ In most years, there’s not nearly as much intrigue at the top: where will Sidney Crosby go in most leagues? Given the setback reported
over the summer, we’ve bumped him to #23 overall on our board, which is probably one of the lower points in the industry this year. But
if the informed speculation about him missing half or more of the season proves to be correct, you’re sunk if you spent a first or second-
round pick on him. Given a choice, it’s better to miss getting him than to pay too dear of a price for him.
^ The “changing of the guard” we identified a year ago has slowed dramatically. Most top-round names are now holdovers from last year.
^ The defensive consensus has collapsed! A year ago, we (and in fairness, a great many other touts as well) identified Mike Green as
the top pick, with Duncan Keith and Drew Doughty also worth quite a lot. Was it only 12 months ago? This year, there are enough #1
defensemen to go around for most teams in standard-sized leagues and defensemen such as the aforementioned ones can be procured
at the #2 or #3 level. Close leagues may be swung this year on the level of success at mining reclamation projects on D.
^ At goalie, the #1 level is relatively shallow, but there are a decent number of #2s on the market. The percentage move is to get one of
the first five on the board, but grabbing a few at the next tier might benefit you in any instance — given that Tim Thomas was completely
off the radar at the start of last season.
^ As usual, centers are deeper than either wing position. Last year, the gap in depth had shrunk between left and right wings as the
lefties had gained much ground. That is the case again this year, as there is now almost no difference in depth between the positions.

economybook.com/
At your draft or auction, Don’t Be That Guy who:
^ Doesn’t properly understand his league’s scoring system. Have the specific parameters down before you go to select
your players.
^ Relies on a publication such as The Hockey News that doesn’t have a draft board. Can you imagine such a thing?
^ Gets caught at the tail end of a run at a position: specifically, #2 defensemen should not be confused with the #1s.
^ Doesn’t put enough emphasis on goal-scorers as opposed to assist-talliers. As is always the case in fantasy sports, scar-
city leads to value.
Suggested League Guidelines
We recommend that you hold your auction or serpentine-style draft with 10 owners, selecting 18 players (6 defensemen, 3
goalies, 3 left wings, 3 centers, 3 right wings). In case of an auction, use a financial system that allots an average of $11
per player.
Our preferred style of play is head-to-head roto, in which teams compete on a week-to-week head-up basis. Recom-
mended categories are points, goals, assists, penalty minutes and plus-minus for forwards and defensemen and wins, least
losses, shutouts, goals-against-average and save percentage for goalies. A rotating tiebreaker category should be utilized
in the case of a 5-5 category tie. The starting lineup should consist of 2 goalies, 2 left wings, 2 centers, 2 right wings and 4
defensemen.

skinny.
He has all the tools of an NHL player, but what about strength? He talked about that after the combine.
“At the combine I only did eight (reps of 150 pounds) but you have to go down to your chest apparently, they didn’t give me two.”
When I asked him if he felt gypped, he laughed and said, “No, I wasn’t too worried about it”
He’s a cool customer. We saw him walking around the NHL Draft hotel and he was more worried about his current rankings in NHL12
(my pal and XM co-host Shane Malloy ranks all the players) than where or when he would be drafted.
Physical strength is one thing, but this kid has inner strength and you can thank his parents, his mom Debbie Nugent, and dad Roger
Hopkins. Of course, those names comprise his last name and his dad’s story shows the kind of mental makeup the kid has.
“My dad is actually retired and my mom is a nurse’s aide. He was a more of a coffee salesman and he got sick a few years ago which put
a hold on that. He never returned to work. He had lymphoma. It was eight years ago now, they didn’t tell me and my brother right away,
we found out a few years later. Obviously it was tough to hear that, you never want to hear that. He has battled through that and now
he’s doing really well. He was sick and in the hospital but never told us what it was. They didn’t want to upset us then. They told us
when we got older … I owe everything to them.”
MMA Ring Announcer Jake Digman

Tomas Jurco – He is a very talented guy who has turned into a good team player and the puck is always on his stick. Detroit nabbed him
with the 35th overall pick, well played.
Boone Jenner – He ended up going 37th overall. He is a terrific all-around player and I think down the road, many will look at this 37th
overall pick by Columbus and say that they got great value here.
BEST QUOTE: Joel Armia has this one down. He was drafted 16th by Buffalo and when asked what kind of player he is, he answered, “I score goals.”
BEST TEMPERAMENT: Isles draft pick Ryan Strome was running full steam through the collectibles area and he was halted by a fan to
take a picture. He stopped dead in his tracks, took off his hat, fixed his hair, and took the photo. Shook hands and started running again.
BEST MOMENT: Getting a chance to interview “Big Buff”. He’s one of the great guys in the game. If you want to check out a video of him
wearing a vintage Winnipeg Jets sweater for the first time, click here: http://www.youtube.com/user/CardCornerClub .

and enthusiasm, both of which were
limitless,” NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman said. “EJ loved scouting games and loved the internal debates over the strengths and weak-
nesses of Entry Draft prospects. The way he ran Central Scouting made it vitally important to every one of our Clubs.
“The NHL family has suffered a tremendous loss,” Commissioner Bettman added. “As we celebrate EJ’s contributions and mourn his
passing, we send our condolences – and our gratitude – to EJ's family and friends."
McGuire is survived by his wife, Terry, and their daughters, Jacqueline and Erin.
"EJ was a colleague, a friend and a mentor who influenced and enriched the hockey lives of thousands of players, coaches, parents and
administrators," said Colin Campbell, NHL Senior Executive Vice President of Hockey Operations. "As a coach, he combined attention to
detail with innovation to teach the game to players at all levels -- from teenage, college and junior players to the elite professionals in the
NHL. As Vice President of Central Scouting and a member of the Hockey Operations Department, he brought wisdom, guidance and
unparalleled commitment to the game to advance it on so many levels.
"EJ had two loves in life: His love of family and his passion for hockey," Campbell said. "The hockey world extends its deepest sympa-
thies to his wife and daughters."
