Designer and Modern Furniture

Author: Louisa

Designer furniture has had many influences over the years. Originally referred to as modern furniture, this is furniture that was first

created in the 19th Century all the way to and through the modern day. These pieces of furniture have been influenced heavily by

modernism. This design is a huge departure from most common furniture designs which are labeled as classic. This brand of furniture

has drastically developed over the last one hundred years or so.

The influences for such styles of furniture come from the first half of the 20th century when a new philosophy emerged that put a

highlighted emphasis on function and immediate accessibility. Furniture was now being designed to meet the needs of the individual

instead of looking fashionable. Where Victorian furniture sough to be more in line with its surroundings and furnishing; modern or

designer furniture sought to be more original thus creating the distinction between the two. It sought to be new and fresh. Designer

furniture had an air of originality, technical innovation and stressed moving forward in design of modern furniture instead of falling back

on old ideals and designs.

The materials used in the production of designer furniture are steels and metals, molded plywood and finally plastics. These new

materials never before seen in the design of furniture added the new found look of crisp functionality. Plastics could mold a chair to

one's backside, metal afforded light and easy to move pieces of furniture and molded plywood meant that it now became easier to

shape various forms of designs which were once thought impossible to achieve.

This movement of furniture started in Germany with the organization called Deutscher Werkbund. This organization was sponsored by

the German government to spearhead the promotion of using these new found designs and materials. These pieces of furniture

eventually spread to other countries and finally reached all four corners of the globe.

Some of the biggest influences in these designer furniture pieces are from both African and Asian cultures. The influence from

Japanese came in the final years of the 19th Century. As Japanese foreign policy began to become more lenient, they opened up

trade with other countries and thus their version of designer furniture was added to the growing movement. If you stop and look around

your living quarters you will find just about everything you sit on or use if of the modern designer furniture movement.
