OVERVIEW: This is the first course in a sequence of courses designed to provide students with
a rigorous program of study in Mathematics. Topics to be studied first semester include:
probability and sample statistics; basic functions, their graphs and characteristics,
transformations of the basic functions; polynomial, radical and rational expressions and
equations.
MATERIALS: Textbook, 3 ring binder with 3 dividers, pencil and pen, paper, a TI-30XS, and
a positive attitude.
TEXTBOOK: Students are financially responsible for all books issued by CHS. Textbooks
may not be left in classrooms and teachers are not responsible for the whereabouts of your book.
The copy which was issued must be turned in at the end of the course. You will not receive
credit for turning in another student’s book and may not turn in replacement books. The cost of
replacement will be assessed to any student that fails to turn in the book they were issued or turns
in a damaged book.
GRADING POLICY: Grading Scale: Final Grade Determined By:
90%-100% A Final Exam 15%
80%-89% B Tests 55%
70%-79% C Quizzes 20%
Below 70% F Homework 10%
CHS Honor Code and Plagiarism Policy will be strictly enforced.
FINAL EXAM: There will be a cumulative final exam at the end of the first semester.
TESTS: There will be 2 Tests during most units. Each test will be announced in advance. Any
student absent the day of the review will be expected to take the test with the class on the
scheduled day.
HOMEWORK: Homework is assigned daily. Students are expected to show all work and
correct their own mistakes. LATE HOMEWORK WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED!
QUIZZES: There will be at least one quiz per Unit this semester. Most quizzes will be
announced 24-48 hours before they occur.
ATTENDANCE and MAKE UP WORK: Regular attendance in this class is essential in order
for each student to be successful. In the event of an unexpected absence, it is the student’s
responsibility to find out the work to be made up and to have it completed in a timely
fashion. If the student knows in advance of an absence (a field trip is an example), it is the
student’s responsibility to get the assignment ahead of time and have it completed upon
their return to class. If the student misses the day before a test, he/she is expected to take
the test as scheduled. When only the day of a test is missed, the student must be prepared
to take the test during the next class period he/she is present. Any other work missed due
to extended absences can be made up by appointment.
TARDY POLICY: In all Chattahoochee classrooms, instruction occurs form bell to bell. If a
student in not in class before the tardy bell rings, a Tardy Pass or Check-in Pass will be required
in order to enter class. This policy is designed to encourage prompt arrival to class in order to
minimize disturbances that occur when students arrive late. Tardiness to class will be tracked by
the Administration on a weekly basis, and they may result in disciplinary consequences as shown
in the student handbook. Excessive tardiness to the same class over the duration of the semester
may also initiate an administrator’s response. A student will not be admitted into any class
without a pass.
RECOVERY:
FCBOE HIGH SCHOOL RECOVERY POLICY:
Opportunities designed to allow students to recover from a low or failing cumulative grade will
be allowed when all work required to date has been completed and the student has demonstrated
a legitimate effort to meet all course requirements including attendance. Students should
contact the teacher concerning recovery opportunities. Teachers are expected to establish a
reasonable time period for recovery work to be completed during the semester. All recovery
work must be directly related to course objectives and must be completed ten school days
prior to the end of the semester. Teachers will determine when and how students with
extenuating circumstances may improve their grades.
CHATTAHOOCHEE HIGH SCHOOL POLICY:
Recovery is available to students with a cumulative grade below 74% after a minimum of 2
major grades. The maximum grade a student can earn for a recovery opportunity is 70%. There
will be only one recovery opportunity per failed major assignment or test. THE STUDENT
MUST INITIATE THE PROCESS WITHIN FIVE (5) DAYS OF NOTIFICATION OF A
FAILING GRADE ON A MAJOR ASSIGNMENT/TEST.
Procedure for recovery in Mathematics classes at CHS: To improve a test grade by recovery
the student must make corrections to the failed test on another sheet of paper and/ or complete
additional questions selected by the teacher and retake a different form of the test within 10
school days of return of the test. The grade from the original test and the Retest will be averaged
to earn a maximum score of 70%.
CONDUCT: All students are expected to be on-time, prepared for class, respectful of others
and involved in all class activities. Appropriate language is expected at all times. You will be
allowed 5 passes per semester. You must use your agenda for these passes, so bring your
agenda to class every day. No food or drinks in class except bottled water.
eSCHOOL PLUS: eSCHOOL PLUS is a software program available to allow parents to keep
up with their student’s grades. Parents may check grade summaries and dates of upcoming tests.
Please, remember that it may take several days to actually enter the grades into the system.

FALL 2011
wardlowi@fultonschools.org
Dear Parents:
I am looking forward to a successful year in GPS ALGEBRA. Please access the syllabus from
my blog. It is available through the website www.chattcougar.com. I would appreciate it if you
would read the syllabus so that you are familiar with the expectations for this course.
Along with your acknowledgement of reading the syllabus, I am requesting a daytime phone
number where at least one parent can be reached and permission to email progress reports home.
This will allow me to update you concerning your child’s progress during my workday, if
necessary. Your child’s first assignment is to have parents send me an email so that I am
sure to have the correct addresses entered. Simply place your child’s name and period
number in the subject line. You do not have to do anything else. If you do not have an email
address please write a note stating that you don’t have one, sign it and return it to me.
Thank you for you cooperation and please feel free to email me at any time if you have questions
or concerns about your student or the course.
“I have read the GPS ALGEBRA course syllabus.”
