BME 310 hour exam 3, 5/7/07 Open book, open notes, 50 minutes
Point count shown in parentheses (20). I suggest that you spend no more than 10 min on 20-point
questions. Short phrases of key words are enough for descriptions. State any assumptions.
1 (15) In the hospital clinical chemistry lab, patient samples are run through a tube to
measure the absorption. Describe why samples from patient #2 may interfere with samples from
patient #2. Describe how this problem is cured.
2 (20) Sketch a block diagram of equipment required, label and describe each item of
equipment, and describe how DNA sequencing is accomplished using a single lane of
electrophoresis.
3 (20) Page 143, Fig. 4.8 shows a block diagram for the STM. Page 144, Fig. 4.9 shows the
optical path for the SFM. (a) For the SFM in constant force mode sketch a block diagram similar
to Fig. 4.8 and explain how it works. (b) For the SFM in constant height mode sketch a block
diagram similar to Fig. 4.8 and explain how it works. (c) Explain the difference between (a)
block diagram and (b) block diagram.
4 (25) (a) Starting with blood in the arm of a patient, list and describe the steps required to
yield the voltage spikes shown on page 179 Fig. 5.8. (b) Starting with Fig. 5.8, list and describe
the steps required to yield the red blood cell distribution shown on page 179 Fig. 5.9(b).
5 (20) Page 206 Fig. 6.11 shows a confocal laser scanning microscope. (a) Sketch and
describe how rotating mirrors skan the specimen. (b) Now remove the pinhole detector aperture.
Would the image be the same? Would the image disappear? Describe any changes in the image.
