Ohio Sigma Member Development Program: Sigma Challenge



The Quest challenges all Sigma’s to complete specific tasks and be proficient in the following

areas:



 Self

o Develop 3 personal goals

o Complete at least one personal reflection entry in The Quest

o Time Management

 Read pages 11 – 26, “academic excellence”, in the LROB

 Attend Speaker on time management (or visit with your academic advisor

to discuss how to balance your activities)

o Physical fitness

 Read “Sound Body” in LROB pp 27 – 32

 3 of the following:

 Health and Wellness tracker

 Partake in Intramural sports

 Attend a speaker on Alcohol abuse or healthier living

 Create a personalized workout program with a professional trainer

 Plan a workout and track your progress

 Attend SigEp “Boot camp” sessions weekly

o Complete Sigma Milestones

 Chapter



o Chapter/National History

 Read pages 65 – 99 in LROB (National history)

 Discuss creed

 Attend Alumni Speaker on Chapter/National History + pass quiz

o Brotherhood

 House Project

 Interviews

o Chapter Structure

 Chapter attendance – maintain good attendance to chapter events

o Team Building

 New Member Camp

o Ritual Study

 Review Sigma Rite of Passage w/ Chaplain

 Attend general discussion of ritual w/ chaplain and BM’s

 Community

o Community Service

 10 hours community service

o Culture (to take advantage of the unique cultural environment of our campus)

 Attend a CO concert or one of the various Museums (including rock hall)

w/ a group of brothers + write a reflection

Most of your goals will be accomplished through attendance to weekly Sigma meetings, failure

to do so will only require, you, the Sigma to do more work independently or face possible

expulsion.



Example of Meeting Schedule (to be adjusted, edited, and scheduled by the Sigma Coordinator

in association with the Sigma’s)



Note: EACH MEETING SHOULD BEGIN WITH SOME SORT OF PROGRESS REPORT (ex:

did you work out this week, how have you come closer to accomplishing your goals… etc)



Meeting 1 (date) –introduction/Beg. Of House Week

Introduce New Members to Sigma Program + what is the purpose of mem. Dev.

Discuss Meaning of Fraternity (why did they join.. etc…)

Sign Membership Agreements

Develop 3 personal goals that can be accomplished within the 8 weeks of the Sigma

Determine House Project

Meeting 2 (date) – Time Management

Have Sigma’s read the time management section (or make it homework)

Have a Speaker in attendance to discuss time management (talk to Greek Life office or

tutoring services, or even brothers in good standing their study habits (hold a discussion))



Note: if you miss Meeting 2, you can complete your Time Management req. by setting up a

meeting with your advisor and discussing balance and having a sheet signed by your advisor

confirming the session as well as a reflection of how you will create that balance

Meeting 3 (date) – Ritual Study

Have a date that the Chaplain can attend

Discuss Sigma Rite of Passage

Go over the SigEp Creed

Meeting 4 (date) – Chapter History

Take Sigma Quiz

Listen to Alumni speaker on chapter history and national history

Meeting 5 (date) Cultural event

As a group determine (beforehand) a time and place to fill fine arts req. (if possible get

other members involved as well)

Attend and hold group discussion afterwards



Meeting 6 (date) House Project

Complete house project



Meeting 7 (date) – MADD Speaker

Attend speaker on health and wellness



The rest of the goals should be done independently… Community Service should be complete

with brothers during weekly comm. service events (an additional meeting could be attending a

specific community service event)

Physical Fitness goals should be completed at ones own pace. For those needing the discipline

of events can attend the MADD speaker and weekly brotherhood workouts in addition to filling

out the workout/fitness tracker (a lifting plan which they keep along with the workout)



Interviews are to be done at ones own pace

At each meeting each Sigma must have completed 3 additional interviews to be presented

to the Sigma Coordinator or the VP of Member Development





The Phi Challenge

The objective of the Phi Challenge is to understand the benefits of fraternalism.



Requirements:



I. Being a member in good standing

A. Having good attendance at chapter functions and meetings

B. Maintaining the appropriate GPA

C. Paying your dues



SELF

A. Post Action Plan

B. Select a Mentor for the next challenge

C. Attend two cultural events

D. Attend a male/female discussion with a sorority

E. Etiquette Dinner

F. Workout Plan

G. Participate in at least one intramural sport

H. Complete Phi Milestones



CHAPTER



A. Write a Chapter Operations Outline

B. Attend an Alumni Board meeting

C. Serve on a chapter committee, serve as a chair, or go to Carlson

D. Plan a recruitment event

E. Memorize Oath of Obligation



COMMUNITY



A. Conduct 10 hours of community service

B. Bring info of a new community service source

C. Work on an organized community service project (Habitat for Humanity, City

Mission, etc.)

D. Attend an IFC meeting

E. Meet with Wes Schaub

F. Attend a seminar on crisis management (get CPR certified, listen to a speaker on

chapter risk management, etc.)



The suggested duration of the Sigma Challenge is from 12 weeks to 1 year.

Remember, if you have any questions regarding this challenge, feel free to talk to your

current mentor or your stage coordinator, Ronald Barnett.





The Epsilon Challenge

The objective of the Epsilon Challenge is to focus on becoming a servant-leader within the

chapter and community.



1. Requirements:

Being a member in good standing

A. Having good attendance at chapter functions and Epsilon meetings

B. Maintaining the appropriate GPA

C. Paying your dues



2. SELF

A. Post Action Plan

B. Select a Mentor

C. Participate in 3 Art and Culture Awareness Activities

i.e. help put on a dinner for the chapter, go with epsilons to see a play or movie,

visit museums, go to a concert, visit an art show

D. Plan a work out schedule

E. Participate in at least 1 IM sport

F. Take your resume to the Career Center to be looked at/ critiqued

G. Do an additional Career planning activity

i.e. attend the career fair, go on a mock interview

H. Write Epsilon Milestones paper

I. Write one week’s worth of Personal Reflections in The Quest



3. CHAPTER

A. Attend an epsilon meeting about the ritual and its meanings

B. Be a mentor to one of the sigma’s or phi’s

C. Hold an E-board, SEB or chair/committee position



4. COMMUNITY

G. Conduct significant community service project (Epsilon project based, requires

Epsilon Coordinator approval)

H. Serve as a leader in another campus organization

I. Attend a campus speaker



The suggested duration of the Epsilon Challenge is from 12 weeks to 1 year.

This is a challenging stage that takes a lot of commitment and work, which is why many people

are unable to move on to Brother Mentor before they graduate. Being an Epsilon carries a

responsibility to be a leader in our house.

current mentor or your challenge coordinator.
