OPEN MINDS BOOK CLUB
SIGN-UP
As advertised before the holidays, the Character Education
Committee at Smith School is starting an Open Minds Book Club. It will have three chapters:
6th Grade, 7th Grade, 8th Grade. Each grade will meet separately and read different books.
HOW WILL THIS BOOK CLUB WORK?
You will soon be invited to join a Chapter of the Club by your English teacher.
(Membership will have no effect on your English class grade.)
Permission slips will be given to those who sign up. After you have submitted a
permission slip signed by your parent/guardian, you will be given a copy of the
selected book.
After several weeks, you will meet to discuss it two or three times during lunch
with the group leaders. At each meeting, you are welcome to eat your lunch as we
discuss our current book. You will have ample time to read the book.
The purpose of each meeting is to share your thoughts on and reactions to the
book. Possibly you will have questions to pose to the other readers.
Remember, the intent of Open Minds is the sharing of the enjoyment of reading.
If Oprah can foster the love of reading a good book, so can we!!!
***
Please sign up before January 18 and turn in your permission slip to your English
teacher. You will be given the selected book shortly, and you will be advised of the
first lunch meeting thereafter. You will have plenty of time to read your book; we
don’t want this to be a burden for you! Reading is meant to be fun!
Thank you for your attention!
Mrs. Findlay, Ms. Ricigliano, and Mrs. Csengeto
