Welcome to 6th grade Language Arts!
The following is an outline for success in Ms. Meyer’s class. Each student is required to read, sign and follow this
plan. Parents are asked to read and sign as well.
Course Description: Some of the topics students will be learning are literary genres, writing, using reference
materials, vocabulary building, effective reading strategies to match different texts, reading fiction (short
stories, novels, fables, myths), nonfiction, poetry, book projects, book talking, taking reading assessments to help
prepare for the EOG, grammar, personal writing, literary analysis and more.
Grades and Assessment: Students will be assessed through tests, quizzes, projects and homework. Writing will
be graded using rubrics. Report card grades are calculated as follows:
Major assessments (tests, projects, major papers) = 35% Minor assessments (quizzes and IRRs) = 20%
Class work (includes notebook, warm-ups, SSR) = 35% Homework = 10%
Policies and Expectations:
● You should bring to class each day: a binder for LA and your ESSENTIALS binder that holds your agenda,
homework folder, pencil pouch with blue/black ink pens, pencils, and an independent reading book. _____ (student

• IRR = Independent Reading Record. Students are required to read each week outside of school. This can be any
type of material they choose that is appropriate. IRR will be checked every 2 weeks.
● You will receive an emergency pass. This gives you 3 opportunities for emergencies to leave class during a
quarter. I will tear off a “seahawk” each time you use it. I do keep up with tardies. I start class on time and if
you are not in your assigned seat, you are tardy.
● We will have homework on a regular basis. You can check http://new.schoolnotes.com daily, weekly, and/or when
you are absent.
● HOMEWORK IS TO BE RECORDED IN YOUR AGENDA ______ (student initial)
● If you are absent, it is your responsibility to make up all missed work.
• Late work will receive a 20 point deduction.
