EMILY’S WORLD: A Plein Air Tribute
Saturday and Sunday, May 31 and June 1 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Metchosin, B.C.
Through 1908 and 1909 Emily Carr took summer trips to paint in such places as Alert Bay, Campbell River, Cape Mudge on Quadra Island, Sechelt and up the Fraser River to Hope, Yale and Lytton. She was on a powerful personal quest to record the amazing culture of First Nations’ villages. Fast forward 100 years, and in this year when we celebrate 150 years of shared British Columbia history, local painters’ groups inspired by the work of the iconic Emily Carr will visit many of the Victoria and West Shore places she enjoyed, in an effort to capture the natural landscape a century later. What’s changed? What hasn’t? What have we learned? Where do we go from here? Enjoy a very special “People’s Gallery” of new plein aire works inspired by Emily, her stories and her amazing travels. Please see page 5 for more information on plein aire locations where painters will gather throughout the month of May to create works for this special art show to be held in a community Emily was particularly fond of. Make a day of it when you also attend the FIRED UP! Show running simultaneously in the Metchosin Community Hall (see adjacent panel).
FIRED UP! Contemporary Works in Clay
May 30 to June 1
Metchosin Community Hall, Metchosin, B.C.
Work by Gary Merkel In 1984, when Robin Hopper and others dreamt of producing a show that would highlight new work of some of British Columbia's most dedicated ceramic artists, while educating the interested public in cutting edge ceramics, this collective group joined together and Fired Up! was born. Through the years, some of the original members retired and other fine artists were asked to join. The show also features different guest artists each year.
The gallery area in the hall is loved by collectors and customers alike, who enjoy the varied interpretations of each potter. In the past, themes have revolved around flowers and gardens and water; “Pots for the Garden” and “Water Vessels”, as well as other various ideas. The theme for the 2008 show is “Collaborations: Artists Interact”, and there will no doubt be many surprises with ceramic artists working with print makers, glass blowers, painters and other fine art specialists. This year's participants are core members, Cathi Jefferson, Susan Delatour LePoidevin, Kinichi Shigeno, Pat Webber, Alan Burgess, Marlene Bowman, Gordon Hutchens, Meira Mathison, Glenys Marshall-Inman, Gary Merkel, and Meg Burgess. Guest artists: Alison Tang, Sandra Dolph, and Lynne Johnson. A very special selection of Walter Dexter’s work will also be on display. For more information, please contact Tobias at 383.3893 or Meira at 727.9463 or visit FIRED UP! Online at www.firedup.ca
