CLASS J - HOOKED RUGS
Recommended Points to Consider for Judging Hooked Rugs:
1. Description 2. First Impression 3. Color 4. Craftsmanship 5. Technique 6. Finishing • For the protection of the exhibitor, all entries must have the Entry Tag stitched on, placing it in the lower left corner of the piece. • No Latch Hook Entries. • All entries are part of our public display. Stitch a sleeve to the back of your rug, and fit it with a dowel or a length of wood to enable your rug to hang properly. • If using recognized characters, exhibitor must follow copyright law and obtain permission to use protected images from copyright owner. • Entrants are required to use their own discretion when determining which Section best suits each entry. Pattern Description Geometric Design - Patterns based on repeating simple geometric shapes. Sometimes a geometric may feature a repeated flower or heart but overall the geometric pattern dominates. This section also includes Azeri and Oriental styles and adapted Quilt patterns. Shaded Technique - Fine shading is created by using wool fabric dyed into a colour valued swatch (ranging in 6,8,or 10 values) or by using a ‘dip-dye” technique. Wool dyed using either method is essential to particular shading techniques such as “fingering” in order to produce flowers, objects, people, animals or other such designs, in a realistic manner. Pictorial Design - A “pictorial” features the places we go and the things we do. Seascapes, landscapes, pastoral settings and streetscapes are included in this category as well as interior views of home, work and play. Primitive - is a term used to describe two different aspects of rug hooking. One refers to the “primitive” technique outlining and filling motifs, the other refers to a folksy or simplistic design style. Entries for these sections would not qualify for any of the other sections due to design, technique used, purpose, or size requirements.
