INSURANCE
WHO IS COVERD?
Any Saint John Ambulance instructor
who has a current SJA instructor
certificate is covered while teaching a
SJA course as specified below.

What does the policy cover?
While teaching SJA courses we provide you
with personal protection and third party
property damage. This coverage provides
protection from claims against you for
personal injury (loss of life and limb) and
property damage found to be due to your
negligence, if the injury or property damage
takes place while you are acting as a member
of SJA.

You are considered a member of SJA
while you are teaching a SJA course,
traveling to and from a SJA course you
are teaching, or any time you stop to
provide assistance to a person, ill or
injured, and that assistance is not part of
your regular employment or professional
duties

What is the policy limit?
The policy limit is $2,000,000.
In the event of an accident, you are to
advise your provincial
council/branch/special centre immediately.

PARTICIPANTS,
LIABILITY COVERAGE
For which course are participants
covered?
SJA offers an insurance policy for FAC
only, for the following levels:
Emergency
Standard
Advanced level 1
Advanced level 2

What are participants covered for?
The policy protect against the possibility of
being sued for negligence arising from
giving FA. The coverage provides for
$1,000,000. Limit of liability per
occurrence.

Should a graduate be sued, they
should contact their insurer and
advise them of all details pertaining
to the incident, along with any legal
action received from the plaintiff or
plaintiff’s legal counsel.

Their insurer should be made aware
upon giving notice of claim, of the
certificate and its insurance provided
by Co-operators General Insurance
Company.

If the participant does not currently hold a
personal liability policy, we suggest that they
contact the legal Co-operators office with the
following information:
Policy number;
Details of the occurrence, Claim or Action;
How,when and where the “Occurrence”
took place;
Names and addresses of any injured person
and of witnesses.

Is insurance available for someone who
was trained pre insurance effective
date?
No, coverage will be available upon re-
certification.

Is there any age limitation?
Coverage is not provide by age, it is
based upon completing one of the four
FA courses mentioned earlier.

For how long is the insurance valid ?
Insurance valid for the duration of the
certificate so for 3 years period.
Is there a deductible?
Yes, there is a $250. Deductible
applicable per occurrence for“Property
damage”

Is there any time limitation?
Reporting of claims should be done
promptly, and if claim or action is brought
against the insured, prompt written notice
of the claim or action should be given to
the insurer(s).

Does the insurance cover someone who
is negligent?
We will pay the sums that the insured
becomes legally obligates to pay to which this
insurance applies. This means the person who
is suing must prove negligence.

Is St John Ambulance liable from an
instructional point of view?
E.g., someone said they performed CPR
incorrectly and said it was the fault of
the training? Could the instructor be
liable?

St John Ambulance would not be
liable, proof of negligence would
need to be proved by the plaintiff.

Is the coverage good outside the
country?
Yes, the “action” (law suit) must be
made in Canada or a settlement that the
insurer agrees to in writing.
