From Shelf Awareness: John Green- author of Looking for Alaska
On October 16, the audio version of Paper Towns will release-- in six formats, including CD, MP-3, Overdrive, Audible and Playaway, Green believes that audio is "intimate but collaborative." He draws a parallel between the audiobook experience and the visual experience of videoblogs: "Videoblogs are communityoriented," he says, "They are shaped by the viewer. TV is not." On Nerdfighters.com, The Web site Green established with his brother, Hank, the two create videoblogs that simulate a conversation. Green engages in everything from discussions of Catcher in the Rye to Russia's invasion of Georgia (While applying peanut butter to his face--not to be missed), Often addressing Hank directly, as if in answer to a dare (As with the peanut butter entry). In a more recent videoblog [August 29], as a one-time brief resident of Alaska, John Green discusses the selection of Sarah Palin As Republican vice-presidential nominee. He invites teens to comment and especially urges young Republicans to give their opinions. -Brown

THE BIGGEST BOOK NEWS After someone leaked a partial draft of Stephenie Meyer's Midnight Sun, the author responded over the weekend by posting a draft of the book online, a version readers can download. Her reasoning, as she wrote on her website: she didn't want to make curious fans feel bad about looking at an unapproved site. Unfortunately, she wrote, the experience has made her put the book on hold "indefinitely."
Stephenie Meyers is taking some heat about her vampire book series. The following article discusses some of the issues authors are concerns.

Water for ElephantsGruen. A wonderfully engrossing story of real circus life. This is not your smiling clowns rendition of joining the circus but it does have a hero and a heroine, a love triangle and a love story, and a dynamic ending. The Invention of Hugo Cabret- Selznick. Last year’s Caldecott metal. Although usually elementary picture books this choice weaves a story and drawings to keep you enticed until the ending. Devil in the White City The story of America’s first World’s Fair in 1893 Chicago. Two stories grab your attention leading into the planning side of the fair and the underlying story of a serial killer able to operate because everyone was focused on the fair. Tweak- Nic Sheff is a companion book to Beautiful Boy written by Nic’s dad. Here Nic tells his own story of his addiction to meth.

Vegan Virgin ValentineMacker. Mara is not happy that her niece, one year younger than she, is coming to live with her and her parents. This is chick lit with some drama thrown in for fun. The Whistling SeasonDoig. A family of three boys and a widowed father find a new definition of family when a housekeeper and her “brother” come to stay. The Book Thief- Zusak. Death narrates the story of Liesel during the holocaust. She sees death visit so many times he begins to be intrigued by her story and her survival. Little Heathens: Growing up in the Great Depression on an Iowa Farm- Kalish. Wow. Kalish tells her journey during a time when America was struggling and keeps you laughing and wondering if her family knew how tough times were. Lone Survivor- Luttrell. Luttrell is the only survivor of the worst Navy Seal disaster of the U. S. In this book he honors those who did not come home with him. Secrets of My Hollywood Life- Calonita. Another fun chick lit quick read. Kaitlyn is a Hollywood heroine but is planning to play the hardest part of her career- a real teen. Breaking Dawn- Meyer. The final installment of the Twilight series. Excellent ending to the best series to come out in years!!! Raider’s Night- Lipsyte. Finally a great “guy” book. Sometimes with these the language or situations just do not ring true. Not here. Lipsyte is inside the players’ heads with this story of a football team faced with some uncomfortable decisions when one of their own goes too far in a hazing incident and expects to be protected in the name of the name.
