All times listed are Central. WBB-2 2008-09 Women’s Basketball Preview Washburn: The Lady Blues return three starters from a 26-7 team who reached the NCAA Division II Elite Eight and picked up a share of the MIAA regular season championship -- their fifth conference crown under Ron McHenry who is entering his ninth season at WU. Washburn has nine letterwinners back from last season’s squad, including the MIAA’s Defensive MVP in senior G Jessica Mainz (6.8 ppg, 4.6 rpg, 3.8 apg, 1.8 spg), who will join the team after her soccer season ends. The other returning starters are senior G Janice Bright (10.6 ppg, 4.4 rpg) and junior G/F Hope Gregory (4.5 ppg, 4.1 rpg). The Lady Blues added firepower in the paint with a pair of newcomers -- senior F Stanecia Graham (7.0 ppg, 4.8 rpg at Texas Tech) and junior F Dayna Rodriguez (16.5 ppg, 12.5 rpg at Miami-Dade (Fla.) Coll.). Emporia State: The Lady Hornets return seven players that started at least four games on last year’s MIAA regular season title-sharing team that advanced to the NCAA Division II Sweet 16 for the seventh time in 11 years. Three-time All-America Michelle Stueve may be gone, but three players that averaged in double figures return. Junior G Cassondra Boston (11.9 ppg, 3.1 apg, 2.4 rpg) earned second-team All-MIAA honors as a sophomore. Senior F Ida Edwards (13.7 ppg, 7.5 rpg) is ESU’s leading returning scorer and rebounder. Senior GAndrea Leiker (12.4 ppg, 2.7 apg, 2.5 rpg), an MIAA All-Defensive team member in 2007-08, also is back. Senior G Sophia Lenard (10.5 ppg, 6.2 apg, 5.6 rpg at Central Arizona in ‘0607) is the only newcomer for the Lady Hornets this season. Northwest Missouri State: Head coach Gene Steinmeyer enters his 10th year with the Bearcats looking for 10 new players to step in and replace the void left by six seniors lost to graduation after making the round of 32 in the NCAA Division II bracket and winning the MIAA Tournament. Senior G Meghan Brue (11.0 ppg, 4.8 rpg), the team’s second-leading scorer a year ago, heads a group of four seniors. Senior G Amber Vandevender (5.4 ppg, 2.4 rpg, 2.1 apg) started 10 of 19 games before a back injury sidelined her in 2007-08. Newcomers expected to make an impact immediately are sophomore transfer C Rickeya McElroy (Southeastern Illinois Coll.), junior G Vanessa Hutson (Brigham Young) and freshman Gs Abby Henry and Shelly Martin. Central Missouri: This year’s Jennies will look to rebound from back-toback 14-14 seasons. The young squad gained valuable experience last season with seven newcomers seeing significant playing time, including four freshmen. UCM returns seven players from a year ago including the MIAA freshman of the year in sophomore G Kara Fleming (9.2 ppg, 3.8 apg, 3.5 rpg). The Jennies will have to replace their top two scorers and the leading rebounder from last year’s team, but the addition of eight new players has the future looking bright for the Jennies. Head coach David Slifer brought in three junior college players and a Division I transfer for 2008-09. Senior F Katy Davenport (10.2 ppg, 4.2 rpg at Western Illinois) and junior G Meghan Waggoner (17.5 ppg, 6.8 rpg at Johnson County [Kan.] CC) are expected to step in and make big contributions. Missouri Southern: The Lions have three starters back from last season, led by senior G India Wood (10.9 ppg, 3.8 apg, 3.4 rpg), but will need to find replacements for their top two scorers. Southern will be bolstered by several newcomers, including senior transfer Gs Tia Evenson (5.5 ppg, 3.0 apg, 2.6 rpg at Nova Southeastern [Fla.] in ‘0607) and Myosha Barnes (7.4 ppg, 2.5 apg, 2.3 rpg at San Jose [Calif.] State in ‘0708). Junior G Jolea Apon (16.0 ppg, 4.7 rpg, 2.5 apg at Carl Albert [Okla.] State) should also have an impact on the MSSU lineup in her first season. Missouri Western: Though they lost two All-MIAA selections and a conference All-Defensive choice, the Griffons have a young but talented group of sophomores who saw extensive playing time as freshman. Leading the group will be Tierra Ford (10.7 ppg, 5.7 rpg, 2.1 apg) and Lauren Nolke (7.2 ppg, 3.0 rpg). Last season both players averaged 24.7 minutes per game and made big plays in clutch situations. The Griffons’ recruiting class includes sophomore F London Houchin (3.1 ppg at San Diego [Calif.] in ‘06-07) and sophomore G Brenna Saline (Southern Illinois), who bring Division I experience. Also likely to contribute are junior transfer G/F Taylor Lyons (Ohlone [Calif.] Coll.) and junior G Jade 2008-09 MIAA Women’s Basketball Preseason Coaches Poll School Pts Washburn (7) ..................................................................... 97 Emporia State (4) ............................................................... 94 Northwest Missouri State ................................................... 76 Central Missouri ................................................................. 63 Missouri Southern .............................................................. 54 Missouri Western ............................................................... 46 Nebraska-Omaha ............................................................... 44 Pittsburg State ................................................................... 44 9. Nebraska-Omaha: The Mavericks begin their first season of play in the MIAA with seven seniors who want to go out on a positive note. The Mavericks were 17-12 last year, but they were just 3-9 in North Central Conference play. The Mavericks will rely on senior G Ellen Majewski (3.9 ppg, 1.9 rpg) and junior G Alyssa Green (14.1 ppg, 5.9 rpg) to guide the backcourt. Senior G/F LaToya Wright (10.5 ppg, 6.7 rpg) and senior G Cayla Hargrove (10.6 ppg, 4.5 rpg) also are back. Senior F Amanda Brodsack (9.3 ppg, 5.9 rpg), the NCC Newcomer of the Year last season, leads the front line returnees along with junior Fs Ashley Nelson (3.5 ppg, 2.5 rpg) and Jill Wolf (4.3 ppg, 4.0 rpg) The Mavericks also are looking for contributions from senior F Kylee Rinehart, who endured an injury-plagued junior season and sophomore F Katie Kane, who red-shirted last season because of injury. Pittsburg State: Second-year head coach Lane Lord has four returning starters back and ready to get the Gorillas back in the hunt for the postseason -- PSU missed the MIAA Tournament for the first time since 1989-90. Leading the way for Pitt State are senior G Brianna Buchanan (13.6 ppg, 5.8 rpg) and junior G DePrice Taylor (10.3 ppg, 5.2 rpg, 3.5 apg). Freshman F Larissa Richards is back, getting a medical hardship waiver after an injury in her first game last season. She’ll benefit from help coming from junior transfer Fs Nicole McCombs (Drexel [Pa.]) and Aubre Jones (Independence [Kan.] CC). Southwest Baptist: The Bearcats will have three key returners from the squad which advanced to the MIAA Tournament final as well as the NCAAII regional for first-year head coach J.C. Carter. Senior G Courtney Creed (11.0 ppg, 4.8 rpg, 3.0 apg) is SBU’s top returning scorer. Senior G Cortney Shewmaker (9.7 ppg, 3.5 rpg, 3.5 apg, 38.5 3FG%) is back as a perimeter threat, and is joined by junior G/F Rachel Graves (8.8 ppg, 5.2 rpg, 3.6 apg, 2.2 spg). The Bearcats added size with junior transfer C Denise Rosario (11.2 ppg, 7.8 rpg at Northeastern Oklahoma A&M). Truman: After losing four senior starters and hiring Michael Smith as head coach following the 2007-08 season, the Truman women’s basketball team will -- in nearly every aspect -- be a completely different squad in 2008-09. One constant still remains in senior F Georgia Mueller (22.0 ppg, 9.7 rpg, 2.8 apg, 2.45 bspg), a two-time first-team All-MIAA selection. She will be working with an almost entirely new cast in her final season. Fort Hays State: Tony Hobson enters his first year as head coach of the Lady Tigers after guiding Hastings (Neb.) to three NAIA National Championships in seven seasons. Junior G Naomi Bancroft (12.2 ppg, 3.44 3FG per game) is the top returning offensive threat, as she set the school three-point field goals mark last year (86). This was the second postseason tournament title for the Bearcats in five seasons -- the last coming in 2004. Northwest and Washburn (2003, 2005-07) are the only two schools to claim women's titles since the event moved to Kansas City. Senior F Andrea Dill led all scorers for the winners with 18 points -- 13 coming in the second half during which the Bearcats shot 18of-29 from the field (62.1 percent) and was 3-of-6 from three-point range. Dill finished the game 7-of-11 from the floor, including 2-of-3 from the arc. Senior G Kelli Nelson and junior F Jessica Burton each scored 14 points, while junior F Meghan Brue added 11 and junior F Micaela Uriell added 10 -- all in the first half. SBU was led by senior G Erika Souza's 22 points she ended up as the tournament's leading scorer with an average of 23.7 over the tournament. Her 71 points are the third-most in MIAA Tournament history, trailing only the 76 by Emporia State's Emily Bloss in 2001 and the 75 by Washburn's Jennifer Harris in the 2006 event. Souza also averaged 4.3 assists in the tourney. Junior G Cortney Shewmaker was the only other player in double-figure scoring for SBU, as she finished with 13 points. The Lady Bearcats were held to 6-of-21 (28.6 percent) shooting from long range in the game. Both teams started slow in the first half, each missing their first six from the three-point line before making one. The difference early was Northwest hitting the offensive boards, scoring seven points after corralling misses during a 13-0 run to get a 15-4 lead with 12:01 on the first half clock. Uriell capped the run with the game's first trey. SBU scored the next seven points to pull within four with 9:50 left, and trailed by a 20-16 count with 7:51 remaining before the Northwest Missouri State’s Mandi Schumacher (shown here trying to maneuver past SBU’s Kelly Reinkemeyer) was selected as the MVP of the 2007-08 MIAA Women’s Basketball Tournament. • Carla Wehmeyer Northwest Bearcats went on another rush. The green Bearcats outscored SBU by an 18-4 count to get their largest advantage of the half at 38-22 with 1:03 on the clock, Uriell also topped off this outburst with a three-pointer. Southwest Baptist would have the last word in the half, as Souza would finish with four unanswered points to get the gap to 11 at the break, 38-27. The purple Bearcats were able to get the gap to 10 points with 13:49 left in the second half thanks to a 9-2 spurt -- five points coming from sophomore G/F Rachel Graves. That was as close as SBU could get to catching Northwest, as the green Bearcats used a 19-8 run to get their first lead of greater than 20 points, 69-48, with 8:56 to go. Dill scored seven in that span, while Nelson added six points. Senior C Mandi Schumacher, who averaged 14.3 points and 8.7 rebounds in the tournament for Northwest, was selected as the tournament's Most Valuable Player. She was joined by Souza, senior G Corkey Stiger (23.5 ppg, 4.5 apg) and senior F Amanda Holmes (17.5 ppg, 8.0 rpg, 3.5 bspg) from Washburn along with senior F Katie Fowler of Truman (18.5 ppg, 6.5 rpg). 2007-08 MIAA Tournament Final March 9 @ Municipal Auditorium, Kansas City, Mo. Below is a brief biography on each. Special thanks to Sally Dunski of the Hall of Fame for her assistance. Dr. Forrest “Phog” Allen Dr. Phog Allen, who has been declared the "Father of Basketball Coaching," coached seven seasons at what is now the University of Central Missouri from 1912-19. The 1906 graduate of the University of Kansas logged an 84-31 record coaching the UCM basketball squad, and led them to a pair of titles in the first incarnation of the MIAA (1912-13 and 1913-14). Allen also coached football for Central Missouri, recording a 29-17-2 record in six seasons. This was after beginning his coaching career with stops at Baker (Kan.) (1906-08), Kansas (1908-09), and Haskell (1909). He returned to KU and coached the Jayhawks for 37 more seasons. Allen, the 1952 U.S. Olympic Team coach, finished his 48-year collegiate coaching career 746-264 (.739). He was inducted in 1959. Harry “The Horse” Gallatin A seven-time National Basketball Association All-Star and 1962-63 NBA Coach of the Year, Harry "The Horse" Gallatin was a product of what is now called Truman State University. He played two seasons in Kirksville, earning All-MIAA honors in both 1946-47 and 1947-48. The Bulldogs won conference championships in each season, and made two trips to the NAIA National Tournament under coach Boyd King. With Gallatin on the court, the Bulldogs were 59-4. He was selected by the New York Knickerbockers in the 1948 Basketball Association of America (now the NBA) Draft. After nine seasons in New York and a season with the Detroit Pistons, he retired as a player. He returned to the NBA and coached the St. Louis Hawks and the Knicks, logging a 136120 record. Gallatin was inducted in 1991. Henry Iba Henry Iba was a 1928 graduate of Northwest Missouri State University, and his first collegiate coaching experience came with the Bearcats. He logged the first 99 wins of his Hall of Fame career in Maryville, and he didn't suffer a loss until the 12th game of his second season on campus, a string of 42 wins that still stands as the MIAA record. The 'Cats were 31-0 in 1929-30. In his third season at NWMSU, the Bearcats placed second at the National AAU Tournament with a 24-2 record. After a season at Colorado, Iba settled in at Oklahoma State, where he logged 36 seasons. He finished with a 767338 record and coached three U.S. Olympic Teams. Mr. Iba, whose nephew Gene is the head coach at Pittsburg State, was inducted in 1968. “Jumpin’ Jack” McCracken One of the key figures for Henry Iba at what is now known as Northwest Missouri State University was "Jumpin' Jack" McCracken. McCracken, who also played high school basketball under Iba, was considered by the coach as one of the finest players he ever tutored. He earned All-America honors while with the Bearcats, and later went on to play 12 seasons in the Amateur Athletic Union including the 1937 AAU National Champion Denver Safeway squad and the Denver Legion. He earned AAU All-America honors eight times. Following the '39 AAU campaign, he was named the greatest player of all-time by the organization. McCracken was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1962. A.C. “Dutch” Lonborg A.C. "Dutch" Lonborg spent 29 years as a collegiate head coach, beginning with two seasons at McPherson (Kan.) College before he came to Washburn in 1923. Lonborg led the Ichabods to the 1925 AAU Championship – the last college team to win the title. In his four seasons at WU, he had a record of 49-12-1. His .798 winning percentage is still tops in the school record books. He spent the bulk of his coaching career at Northwestern, coaching the Wildcats to their first Big Ten title in 1931. He was enshrined in 1973. Billie Moore Billie Moore, a 1965 graduate of Washburn, was the first head coach for the U.S. Olympic women's basketball program, guiding the 1976 team which included, among others, Pat Summit (now head coach at Tennessee) to a silver medal. She coached Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women national championship squads at two different schools –Fullerton (Calif.) State in 1970 and UCLA, led by the great Ann Meyers, in 1978. Moore posted a 436-196 record in 25 seasons as a collegiate coach. She was a 1999 inductee to the Hall of Fame. Arthur Schabinger Arthur Schabinger, an alum of Emporia State University, coached for E-State, Ottawa (Kan.), and Creighton (Neb.) during the first half of the 20th century. Schabinger was a leading advocate, with Dr. Phog Allen, in founding the National Basketball Coaches Association in 1927, and was the organization's president in 1931-32. An early proponent of 10-second backcourt rule during his days as a part of the NABC Rules Committee, Schabinger was inducted to the Hall of Fame in 1961. Ernest “One Grand” Schmidt Ernest Schmidt came to what is now Pittsburg State University in 1929, and helped the Gorillas to 47 straight wins and four Central Intercollegiate Conference titles. He was the first player to score 1,000 career points at PSU, earning his nickname. He was voted Greatest Player in the Missouri Valley and a Helms Foundation AllAmerica in 1932. Schmidt later had an outstanding AAU career with the Reno Creameries and Denver Piggly Wiggly teams. He was inducted to the Hall in 1973. WBB-22
