                  QUALIFICATIONS & LEVELS EXPLAINED
Under our training programmes, students study for a National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) and a
number of other qualifications that will help them to achieve employment in their chosen career area.

National Vocational Qualification’s (NVQ)
NVQ‟s are work-related qualifications. They reflect the skills and knowledge required to demonstrate
that a person is competent to do a particular job. NVQ‟s are offered at Levels 1, 2 and 3 in a range of
subjects. NVQ‟s are equivalent to GCSE‟s & A‟ Levels, and allow progression to further education.
Candidates on the NVQ course must either be in employment or on placement with an employer
carrying out real work activities. Our tutors assess the candidate in the work place to confirm they are
occupationally competent.

Level 2 Apprenticeship
Level 2 Apprenticeship offers the opportunity to gain job related skills and NVQs at Level 2. Level 2
Apprenticeships are in paid employment from day one. Each student follows an agreed training plan
designed to suit their individual needs. Apprentices are supported for up to 65 weeks depending on
what occupational area the training is in. They can lead to more advanced qualifications, such as a
Level 3 apprenticeship. Apprenticeships are open to all people who have reached the minimum
school learning age, and who meet the entry requirements set out by the sector.

Level 3 Apprenticeships
Level 3 Apprenticeships are an important option for progression in your current employment. They
are designed to equip young people with advanced occupational skills and broader Essential Skills
essential for the workplace. All apprentices must follow an approved framework. The framework
consists of NVQ Level 3 together with the appropriate Technical Certificates & Essential Skills. The
length of time taken to achieve an apprenticeship varies according to the young person‟s specific
needs and rate of progress. Apprentices are in paid employment from day one; you may have
completed a Level 2 Apprenticeship or gained direct entry at Level 3.

Technical Certificate
Technical Certificates are about knowledge and understanding and are taken either as single
qualifications or alongside NVQ‟s. They should increase your ability to make connections between
what you are doing at work and what you are „thinking‟. Technical Certificates are available across a
range of vocational areas including, I.T., Administration, Childcare, Catering, Retail, Stores etc.

Essential Skills
Essential skills are the skills that are commonly needed for success in a range of activities in
education and training, work and life in general. The Essential skills are:
Application of number; Communication; Improving own learning and performance; Information and
communication technology; Problem solving; & Working with others. Students may follow some or all
of these Essential Skills depending on the course they are following. These are also available in a
range of levels from Entry Level 1 to Level 2.

Progress File
Progress file is an interactive set of materials designed to help young people and adults develop as
independent learners, capable of taking informed decisions about their personal and career
development. They are intended to fit with existing reviewing, assessment, planning and recording
practices within the organisation.

Careers Advice, Entitlement and Job search
We provide help and advice on all aspects of Careers advice and Job Searching. There‟s more to
getting a job than just having qualifications. Employers need people who are good communicators,
number & IT literate, reliable and willing to improve their skills. We help find the vacancies, assist you
in compiling a CV, writing letters of application, personal presentation and interview techniques.
Assessments
A tutor carries out assessments during your day release or in the work place. Assessments are a
way of deciding what stage trainees have reached in their learning, where they need to go and how
best to get there. The assessment arrangements are planned together and you will be given time to
prepare for each assessment.

                                  STEPS IN THE PROCESS

Step 1
Adviser Guidance
Trained Advisers will be able to offer you personalised advice, guidance, information and support to
help you get a job. They may be able to help you with interview travel costs, or the purchase of goods
or services which could make the difference to you finding work. They can also arrange for you to
meet with a Careers Adviser, and assist you with Job Search.

Step One provision is designed to provide short duration intervention and will be of particular benefit
to those who are assessed as being close to the labour market.

Short Accredited Courses
You can undertake one course lasting up to a maximum of 10 days. These courses are aimed at
people who are mainly „job ready‟ but you may not have an accredited vocational qualification needed
for particular jobs. Short courses lasting up to 2 weeks include Food Safety Award, CSR Card, Word
Processing, New CLAIT and other Vocationally Related Qualifications. In addition, you can undertake
one or more, (or all as a 10 day course) of the following elements:

Essential Skills Element – As well as assessing your reading and writing skills, this 1 day element will
advise you about the support that is available to you to improve your skills and therefore your
chances of getting and keeping a job.

Personal Assessment – This element, which can last up to three days, will help determine how ready
you are to find work, identify your training needs, consider any problems or concerns you may have
around finding employment and advise how you can work towards overcoming these.

Job search, Employability and Interview Skills, CV Building – Develop techniques that will improve
your job search skills and help you find and keep a job. You will also complete a CV or update your
own.

Internet Navigation/Introduction to IT – This one day element will help you acquire the skills to
improve your job search activities through the use of I.T.

Self Employment Awareness – A basic awareness session (1/2 day) which will provide information on
self employment with the opportunity to participate in a more comprehensive 5 day Start a Business
training course if you wish to explore self employment further.

Step 2
Time spent on Step 2 can vary – it will normally range from 4 to 13 weeks but can last up to a
maximum of 52 weeks depending on the provision selected. While taking part in Step 2 you will
receive a weekly Training Premium and keep any benefits currently being paid to you. If you feel that
the support available in Step 2 is the right option for you then you can choose from the following
elements:

Essential Skills Training
Essential Skills Training aims to help improve or develop your reading, writing or figure work; it can
also provide you with a nationally recognised Essential Skills qualification. While participating in
Essential Skills Training you can also be assisted to develop a range of other personal and work
related skills such as self-confidence, commitment, motivation, team working and communication, all
in a work place setting.

13 Week Provision
You can access provision up to 13 weeks which may consist of a high quality job placement, through
on-the-job work experience within the private/public/voluntary/community sectors, or you could
undertake a Vocationally Related Qualification, combined with a work experience job placement. The
key objectives of this provision are to:

      Increase your employability so that you have a better chance of finding work;
 Provide you with up-to-date, meaningful and relevant experience of the workplace; and
 Help equip you with the skills likely to be sought by prospective employers

Qualifications
You have the opportunity to pursue accredited qualifications, which are approved by the Adviser,
namely:

 A full NVQ at Level 2 or 3 linked to NI employers‟ skills needs and job vacancies
 Units of an NVQ where these contribute to the achievement of a full NVQ

Self Employment – Test Trading
For those who are serious about setting up their own business, this element offers the opportunity to
move into supported self-employment. You will receive advice and support to set up and run your
own business for a period as well as receiving an allowance while remaining on Steps to Work.

Subsidised Employment
The aim of the subsidised employment is to improve your chances of finding permanent work. It offers
a prospective employer a subsidy of up to £100 a week for up to 26 weeks for employing you. As an
employee you will receive the normal rate of pay for the job.

Additional Help
You may feel that you would benefit from some more personal help or advice while you are taking
part in Steps to Work or starting employment, particularly if you have been out of work for a long time.
An agreed period of one-to-one support can be arranged to help you overcome any barriers or
problems and increase your prospects of obtaining or keeping a job.

Step 3

Step 3 elements are for those who have not found work after taking part in Step 2 who may need
continued assistance from an Adviser.

The adviser will provide support aimed at helping you use your newly acquired skills to maximise your
chances of finding a job.

During this step you can access any element of provision available in Step 1 not previously
undertaken.
