and writings are published. Generally, writings under this
category encompass relationship stories, generational sagas, love
stories and almost anything that women in the society can relate
to.

One of the categories of women’s fiction is romantic suspense.
Romantic suspense is a contemporary category in women’s fiction
that usually involves an intriguing mystery or incident that is
woven around a female character. In a typical romantic suspense
story the female character is a target of a conspiracy, crime or an
attempted crime and the male character of the story attempts to
save her from it. By the end of romantic suspense novels, the
suspense if unfolded and the relation between the female
protagonist and a male character evolves into a romantic
relationship. In a romantic suspense novel, it is imperative that
the romance between character and incidents causing suspense
are in fact one complex story.

One of the key differences between writing style of a romantic
suspense novels and traditional romantic novels is that,
relationships depicted in the former do not use any traditional
romantic verses or detailed description of sentiments in the story.
Generally, such novels focus more on the events of the suspense
that are taking place around the characters , than on the personal
aspects of the characters. This means that romantic suspense
novels focus more on the plot than on the characters. However,
in romantic suspense novels, the lives of the characters and the
suspense situations are intertwined and characters and affected
by the situations depicted in the story, adding to the suspense.

While the romantic suspense deals with mystery, chick lit is a
genre of women’s fiction that attempts to address the issues of
modern women in a light hearted and humorous way. The term
chick lit has been derived from the word ‘chick’ which is an
American slang for ‘girl’ and ‘lit’ which is a short form for
‘literature’. Fiction under this category is often criticized;
describing it to be frivolous and stereotypical, but the genre
continues to remain popular amongst female readers. Chick lit
genre regards the womanhood of its lead female protagonist as
the main theme in the plot. Chick lit novels often feature a
stylish, career-driven female protagonist who is in her twenties or
thirties and may have an obsessive tendency towards something
like shopping, looking good, being stylish or being obsessed
about their appearance. It is this tendency of the protagonist in a
Chick lit novel that gives rise to humorous situations. Apart from
the usual contemporary style mentioned above, Chick lit writing
has also been adopted to write historical chick lit stories, ethnic
chick lit, religious chick lit and other sub genres.
