“THE MOST DANGEROUS GAME” By Richard Connell RICHARD CONNELL Sports reporter at age 10 Edited his father’s newspaper at 16 Involved in journalism at Harvard University, where he was an editor for the Daily Crimson During WWI, Connell edited his division’s newspaper and reported on wartime events In 1924, he published “The Most Dangerous Game” BACKGROUND TO STORY Czar Nicholas II was overthrown in the Russian Revolution of 1917 when the people of Russia rebelled against the government. The military branch that guarded Czar Nicholas were known as the Cossacks. The Cossacks were banished, executed, or forced into exile when the Czar was overthrown. COSSACKS While in service, the Cossacks were members of the Russian military who enjoyed an elite and privileged status Cossacks were considered to be independent and savage WHAT IS “GAME” Denotation: Dictionary Definition • An amusement or pastime • A competitive activity involving skill, chance, or endurance • A trick or strategy • Fun; sport of any kind; joke • Wild animals • The flesh of wild animals • Any object of pursuit, attack abuse CONNOTATIONS What do you think of when you hear game?
