SUMMER ACTIVITIES
PROSPECTIVE STUDENT-ATHLETES
In all sports except Basketball, those who enroll and attend summer sessions at Long Beach State may:
Receive academic support services
Utilize the Training Room
Be considered a student-athlete for contact purposes
Be considered a student-athlete for benefits such as an occasional meal (Bylaw 16)
In Basketball, those who enroll and attend summer sessions at Long Beach State may:

Engage in voluntary summer workouts conducted by the Strength and Conditioning Coach
Participate in open gym
SUMMER ACTIVITIES
CURRENT STUDENT-ATHLETES
During the summer:
Current Student-athletes may participate in strength and conditioning activities conducted by
the Strength and Conditioning Coach.
Coaches (other than the Strength and Conditioning Coach) may not observe the student-athlete
participating in voluntary activities including open gyms, etc.
An institution’s coach may not mandate a student-athletes involvement in such activities or any
activity that the student-athlete engages in. It must be voluntary and requested by the student-
athlete.
The Strength and Conditioning Coach and the student-athlete may not report back to the
coaching staff any information regarding the student-athletes summer conditioning program or
progress.
Individual Sports Only. An institution’s coach may participate in individual-workout
sessions with a student-athlete from the coach’s team during the summer, provided the
request for such assistance is initiated by the student-athlete.
Individual Sports Only. An institution’s coach may not participate in individual workout
sessions with a student-athlete from the coach's team if the workout session takes place
in conjunction with a competition in which the student-athlete is a participant.
Outside summer:
No more than the following number of current student athletes with remaining eligibility may
practice or compete out of season for the same amateur team during the summer
Baseball – 4
Basketball – 2
Cross Country – 2
Golf – 2
Soccer – 5
Softball – 4
Tennis – 2
Track – 7
Volleyball – 2
Water Polo – no limit
May 1st exception for Men’s Water Polo, Women’s Volleyball and Soccer
Practice and/or competition may not start any earlier than May 1st
The number of student-athletes per team must comply with the number listed above
No class may by missed for practices or competition
SUMMER LEAGUE PLAY – BASKETBALL
Student-athletes may compete on only one team in one NCAA approved summer league between June
15 and August 31
Student-athletes must have written permission by Long Beach State Director of Athletics
Student-athlete may not play in a “All Star” game of any type
No more than two players with eligibility remaining from any single 2 or 4 year college can play
on the same league team
The league must be within 100 miles of your official residence or the Long Beach State campus
SUMMER COMPETITION AWARDS AND PRIZES
In order to maintain your amateur status and remain eligible for intercollegiate competition, you
cannot receive any type of pay for play, either directly or indirectly.
“Pay” includes any type of salary or compensation (including cash prizes). You may receive
actual and necessary travel, room and board expenses, and apparel and equipment for practice
and competition. These expenses may be received only from someone upon whom you are
naturally or legally dependent, a non-Long Beach State team, or from an amateur organization
or local sports club. Such expenses cannot be based upon the outcome of the competition.
In the summer, the awards or prizes you may receive must conform to the regulations of the
amateur governing body in your sport. At no time, under any circumstances, are you to receive
cash. Any questions about permissible prizes should be directed to your coach in advance of the
competition, so as not to jeopardize your eligibility.
All awards or cash prizes that you are not allowed to receive under NCAA regulations cannot be
given in your name to another individual or agency.
SUMMER EMPLOYMENT
Student-athletes must complete and submit the Summer Employment Approval form including the
employer’s information and signature to the Associate AD for Compliance for review and approval prior
to the start of the employment.
