Ms. Sipe’s Third Grade Newsletter
Wednesday, November 3, 2010
Hi parents! Happy Wednesday! I hope everyone enjoyed last week’s break. I am
pleased to say that all Grammar Packets were complete… and most were 100% correct!
Also, congratulations to Angela Brans, our Geography Bee winner! I was VERY impressed
with student answers during the bee. We are grammar AND geography experts!
In Math this week, we have discussed the metric system (centimeters, meters, and
kilometers), and are beginning to study fractions. We’re playing a fun game called “Cover-
Up” with fraction pieces!
We began learning about “ancient civilizations”, beginning with “Ancient Greece”. We
learned that “ancient” means “really old”, and a “civilization” is a group of people with a way
to read and keep track of things. We began learning about the Greek gods and goddesses,
and even researched individually in the computer lab.
In Bible, we discussed “fear” and how God can be our shield and keep us from being
afraid. We learned that people struggle with many kinds of “phobias”, such as
spectrophobia (fear of mirrors), Consecotaleophobia (fear of chopsticks), claustrophobia
(fear of enclosed spaces), and arachnophobia (fear of spiders). We can understand some
of these fears, but others seem strange. There are many reasons in this world to fear, but
as children of God we are told many times in the Bible, “Do not fear”. God’s perfect loves
drives out fear. Our memory verse for this week is Psalm 28:7, “The Lord is my strength
and my shield; my heart trusts in Him and I am helped.”
We finished our “Family Picture” story books. The students worked really hard on
them and they are filled with sweet family memories! We will share them in class this week
and send them home for you to look at!
A work packet IS going home this week. It’s very large! Please sign it and return. As
always, if you have any questions feel free to email me. Have a great week and weekend!
In Christ,
Ms.Sipe
