Even more new music on the second hour of this week8217s Pampelmoose
edition of the
New Music Hour on Portland8217s 94.7FM. Through the miracle of technology
I can be on air and watch Portland bands at the same time at the CMJ
Music Conference in NYC. This afternoon, Friday, Oct 24th, the PDX CMJ
show kicks off at the Knitting Factory so look out for video and photos
later. Meanwhile I8217m on 94.7FM with resident DJ Squid every Tuesday
and Thursday at 8PM. This is the show from Thursday October 23rd. For
more local and Northwest music you can also tune in to 94.7 Too either on
your HD radio or on the web. 94.7 Too only plays local and Northwest
music, nothing else.

SanFranMusicTech Summit is happening again on Monday Oct 20 and I am
honored to have been invited back once more to participate on a Social
Networking panel. The conference has attracted a
formidable list of speakers . And here8217s the about 8220The
SanFran MusicTech Summit will bring together the best and brightest
developers in the MusicTechnology Space, along with the musicians,
entrepreneurial business people, press, investors, service providers, and
organizations who work with them at the convergence of culture and

Amazons just officially announced that the Amazon MP3 Store will come
preloaded on the HTC G1 Android phone. Its a special optimized version of
the store which lets TMobile G1 users search, download, buy and play
music from Amazon MP3. That means six million DRM free songs from major
and independent labels will be at the fingertips of G1 users, though you
need WiFi to download tracks browsing and sampling can be done over the
phone network and albums cost less than 10 with individual tracks going

October 3rd, 2008 Circle Music strikes again with the second
labelcompilation The Mechanic Side Of Nature.
Therefor labelhead and founder Alex Flatner asked the artists of the
production community once more for exclusive tracks that could be
compiled and got an awsome selection of tracks that are interlocking in
the most organic way it is possible.
With the first Circle Music compilation The World Of Circle the label
presented itself as a community of artists, as a family, that
proclaimed continuous movement, pure power and brilliant soundscapes in
various styles which have these three attributes in common. With these 23
tracks summarized under the title The Mechanic Side Of Nature they are
going one step further by taking this topic and let the music work, not
only present it. By that it is possible to give the issue of Circle Music
the face of its music Reflecting life consequently with electronic music
and digital sound poems in all its facets.
The originally artwork hints to it the dualism of nature and life is
represented in the mechanic character of electronic music art. For this
the general impression of the carpet the music weaves in the mix of Alex
Flatner on the first CD is more darker, concentrated on rhythmic games
and less melodic than on the first compilation. The focus lies more on
the design of sounds and the straight form of the tracks to test the
functionality of music while creating organic rooms with an open and at
the same time tight vegetation of sounds.
In conclusion it is more technoid but organic at the same time, drawing a
masterpiece of light and dark, postive and negative, hunting and being
hunted, giving and taking, using and providing, anger and love. So it is
a picture of life at all happening on earth, in the sky or in oceans, in
the jungles of nature or in the large cities of our engeneered and
networked world.

How to Upload MP3 Music Files to Flickr or Picasa Web Albums

While most people use Flickr for uploading photos and
videos , one can also use photo sharing websites like Picasa or Flickr
for hosting MP3 songs and other audio files.
For instance, these Flickr pictures are identical but the one on right is
actually an MP3 file.
To hide an MP3 file into a JPEG image, copy the MP3 file and a picture
into a folder. Open the command prompt window Start gt Run gt cmd and
switch to this folder. Now run the following command
copy b mypicture.jpg mysong.mp3 mynewpicture.jpg Remember to replace
mypicture and mysong with relevant file names. Next, upload the
mynewpicture.jpg file to Flickr. The
MP3 song picture will look just like any other regular photograph that
you share on Flickr.
When you want to download that MP3 file from Flickr, open the relevant
photo page, go to All Sizes and download the original sized image
example . Change the file extension to MP3 and enjoy the music using
Winamp.
And not just MP3 files, you can upload virtually any filetype to Flickr
using the above trick including PDFs and Microsoft Office documents. But
you may also want to consult Flickr policies to make sure that they dont
ban you for this.

Its an old trick that we can convert mp3 files to jpeg files.By the way
why would one need to host their music files in flickr when there are lot
many services out there for music file hosting.

SaTiSh MeDoS Actually, this isn8217t converting. It8217s two files that
become one. Depending on the active extension it8217ll be handled as if
it were either an image or mp3 file. This opens the door to using every
image hosting website on the web as a file hosting website. So it8217s
pretty useful.

imaging sites it will support. I will of course try this on flickr. I
hope this is something which is easy for me to do. I have very basic
knowledge, and I am still trying to learn as much as possible.

work regardless of the image hosting site. The information is in the
file, and the site displays it as an image because of the jpg extension.
If there is an incompatability, it8217s between browsers, as it8217s the
browser8217s engine that actually decodes and displays the image. So this
will work on Flickr, photobucket, even forums. The only problem would be
if the site changes the image. For example, I think Facebook resizes
large images. MP3 data would most likely be lost this way.

image, the bigger the resulting filesize becomes. Abusing this to host
nonfreely distributable content on a rare occasion is one thing, but
going overboard on what you8217re packing in will surely arouse
someone8217s suspicions.

Smithsonian Folkways to Open MP3 Music Store

the highly competitive world of music downloads by offering the
Smithsonian Folkways collection of ethnic and traditional music in an
online music store.
Smithsonian Global Sound, the new project, will be formally launched
during the Smithsonian Folklife Festival in June. The enterprise is in
the same vein as Microsofts MSNmusic, Apples iTunes Music Store and Sonys
Connect.

This is a museum of sound, says Richard Kurin, director of the
Smithsonian Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage. Folkways will
offer music that ranges from the earliest American folk songs to
contemporary groups doing traditional music from Europe, Africa, Asia and
South America. The music includes the songs of Woody Guthrie the music of
Mwenda Jean Bosco, the late guitar pioneer from Congo the sound of the
Turkish
saz , a stringed instrument similar to a lute playground songs by Suni
Paz of Argentina and the rich North Indian music of Kamalesh Maitra.
Global Sound will charge 99 cents a song, which are available in MP3
format. The Smithsonian will pay royalties to the artists, as its
recording label has done with records and CDs.
The potential broad exposure pleases many Folkways artists.
Im all for it, says Mike Seeger, a member of the New Lost City Ramblers.
The son of musicologist Charles Seeger and halfbrother of Pete Seeger,
Seeger has spent much of his life promoting southern and folk music. I
have a feeling of mission that I would like to have people get to know
this realm of music better. This is a way to afford it, Seeger says.
When we saw the blossoming of the Internet, we thought, what if we could
use this as a device for opening up the archives, says Kurin, who is in
charge of the Folkways archives. People who dont usually have a voice can
have a voice in a democratic, central way.
With monetary returns to the artists, Kurin hopes the payments establish
the ownership of the music. Over the years Folkways has fought to give
the original voices their due. There are world music stars who mine the
traditional music, and the question is, what is the ownership, what is
the moral commitment and how much is going back When we give them the
money, that establishes the intellectual property rights, Kurin says.
The pay to artists is a percentage of each download, but the formula
varies according to contracts, he explains. If the Smithsonian or its
archives partners cant locate an artist, the money is put in escrow.
Since this is new territory for the Smithsonian, the staff needed to
create the Global Sound unit. They recruited Jon Kertzer, an
ethnomusicologist and Microsoft executive, and Anthony Seeger, an
anthropologist, former director of Smithsonian Folkways and nephew of
Pete Seeger, to assemble a development team in Seattle.
The startup money came from the Rockefeller Foundation, the Aga Khan
Trust for Culture, Allen Foundation for Music and Folkways Alive at the
University of Alberta. Rockefeller provided 850,000, part of which would
be paid back if Global Sound makes money.
The Web site, www.smithsonianglobalsound.org
, will allow searches by artist, geographic location, language, cultural
group or instrument. All of the Folkways archives, including photographs,
can be downloaded onto a screen. Also in development are scrolling
translations of some of the music for use on a personal computer. Right
now the Haya Heroic Ballads, a form of storytelling found in northwest
Tanzania, is being translated into English on the Web site.
To help people navigate the site, Kurin hopes to add contemporary
personalities, like Mary Youngblood, the awardwinning Native American
flute player, and Mickey Hart, former drummer for the Grateful Dead, to
guide people to their genre of world music, or their favorites.
The service also includes music from the International Library of African
Music in Grahamstown, South Africa, and the Archives and Research Center
for Ethnomusicology outside New Delhi, not only to expand the
Smithsonians holdings but also to give them a marketplace, Kurin says.
As the Smithsonian finetunes this new service, the promoters hope new
audiences for underappreciated artists of traditional music will develop.

being a host of shows and never get bar takings.
In 1991 1992 Woody, myself and a few other friends had a club open in
Goodwood off all places. Called The Attic. We were short lived as we
constantly had the NG Kerk with Bibles protesting on the pavement with
cop vans there every night to arrest the 8220undead8221

Now guys, we managed to host band nights a few times8230 I have the flyer
up on the Subterania Page of this. One night we hosted Raven Wolf who
were a shit hot kinda folk metal band who actually included Fuzzy the
fiddler etc of Lark RIP The second band was Slay Ride who were a
happening band doing Metallica kinda style metal.
1991 Our cover charge was R8 for 2 bands. 2008 8 9 bands R20
Beers have increased from R1.25 a beer to R10 a beer but the cover charge
remains poor. Once I was chatting outside to Paul from Sugardrive who
were playing at the Purple Turtle with the Dolly Rockers and the cover
charge was R5 A beer then was about R4.50. I saw about 20 people turn
back not wanting to pay R5 to see 2 good bands.
I know the economy is very bad at the moment, but this has been coming
for years now.
