liturgical services. A church is the place where the

Christian community is gathered to hear the word

of God, to offer intercession and praise to him, and

above all to celebrate the holy mysteries, and it is the

place where the Holy Sacrament of the Eucharist is

kept. Thus it stands as a special kind of image of the

Church itself, which is God’s temple built from living

stones. And the altar of a church, around which the

holy people of God gather to take part in the Lord’s

sacrifice and to be refreshed at the heavenly meal,

stands as a sign of Christ himself, who is the priest,

the victim, and the altar of his own sacrifice.

Recollects and was placed in a wooden fortification along

the Cagayan de Oro River bank where the Kagay-anons

hid from Invading Moros. The Birhen, Our Lady of the

Rosary, was considered the protector of this enclosure

which is where the St. Augustine Cathedral is now located.

A popular story tells about how on one occasion of an

attempted attack of the Moros, their approaching vintas

suddenly retreated. According to the narrative, it was

in fear. The people, who at that time were praying the

rosary, attributed the miracle to Our Lady of the Rosary.

From then on, she was called the Birhen sa Kota sa

Cagayan.

The image had been relocated several times in the

ensuring World Wars. In 2008, it was finally enshrined

in the Cathedral, after being entrusted to the Museo de

Oro in Xavier University. It befits her, the pillar for peace

and safety for the Kagay-anons, to be venerated instead

of just being put on display.

In the present times, the Birhen takes on a new

challenge faced by the city, according to Cagayan de Oro

Archbishop Antonio J. Ledesma, SJ, DD - the protection

of the environment. “In our present situation, what is in

greater need of healing is our environment,” he stated in

his message on the Birhen. “Foremost among our natural

After paying homage to the Birhen, a Misang Bayan

was celebrated, presided by Fr. Florencio Salvador, V.G.

The Misa Ng Bayan brought back the early Filipinos’ way

of celebrating the mass. Some important deviation it had

with the current traditional Mass is that one, the cross

is venerated at the start of the Mass - the priest holding

Second, the people take communion before the priest -
