Response
PF and PA are reasonably good indicators of win percentage, with correlations of 0.62 and -0.49 respectively. In
order to score, a team needs posession of the ball. If they have it, their opponent does not and their opponent
consequently can't score at that time. The more a team scores, the more time they generally have the ball and
the less likely their opponent was to be able to score (and win).
The most-winning and least-winning teams are reasonably constant across the seasons. Those that do better
one season generally do better across multiple seasons since their players can return for multiple years and they
will be more attractive to potential recruits. Conversely, those that performed poorly one year generally were
poor multiple years.
The average overall win percentage was 60.4%, which suggests that Big East teams are generally stronger teams
than those outside of the league.
It is possible, though unlikely, for a team who won at least half their conference game to outscored on average
by their opponents. On case where this occurs is at Georgetown in 2010, where their Conference PF was 64.9
and their Conference PA was 65.2. Their win percentage was 0.556. Many of their games were likely close, but
as long as they were up by more than 1 point in a game they won.
A team can be high-scoring and yet have a low win percentage if their defense is weak. With a poor defense,
their opponent can score even more points than the first team.
