President’s Council Meeting Minutes
March 30, 2011 – 09:00 a.m.

Present: Randy Wooten, Brett Bright, Irene Cravey, Annette Ellis, April Graham,

The previous meeting minutes were reviewed and approved with minor changes.
The Event Calendar was presented for March, April and May.
Next meeting will be 6 Apr 2011 at 0900 a.m.
Brett Bright: Presented COPs for review. If any changes required bring them to next
meeting.
Colleen Halupa: Presented a pamphlet from Texas Skills Standard Board. Also stated
an agreement will be drawn up between Texas Motorsports and TSTC Marshall for the
motorcycle driver and safety course.
Around the room:
Deborah Sanders stated her department is working on budget spreadsheets and for the
THECB facilities review.
Marshal V. Joslin reported that along with Pam Evans they are the new advisors for the
Student Veterans of America organization. They are working a membership drive.
Jeff Bell reported the Employee Recognition Committee is working diligently and hope
to have the program active soon.
April Graham reported that she attended an excellent Women’s Leadership program
last week focusing on values. The upcoming Women’s Leadership Day, 22 April 2011,
will focus on values and truth.
Annette Ellis reported the student ambassadors are trying to raise money for shirts.
The shirts will cost $25 each and the organization currently has 7 active members. The
President decided to donate the money for the shirts. The TSTC Road show at NACHS
was a success thanks to the great support by staff and faculty.
Irene Cravey provided a cost analysis of the truck driving program and the combination
welding certificate program and will provide more of other programs in the future.
Brett Bright stated there are now 33 companies for the Industry Career Day. On 14
April 2011, 4 year institutions will be visiting campus. As of now there are 346 enrolled
for summer. The registrar’s office had a VA audit and passed with no discrepancies.
President Randall Wooten wants the President’s Council to tour the house next to the
T&T building once completed with this phase of work.

Career Planning and Placement
As of this afternoon, 3/29/11, we have 33 confirmed attendees for the Industry Career Day
(list is attached). I have met with the Student Ambassadors and they have all been assigned
to duties for that day. I have been preparing welcome packets for our attendees. Sent out
email reminders to the Student Email List concerning the Industry Career Day, Resume
help, and the clothes closet.
I have also been receiving RSVPs for our Transfer Fair set for April 14th. Unfortunately, I
have several colleges and universities respond that they will NOT be able to attend to due
scheduling conflicts or travel restrictions.
I have had a rush of students this week and last week that wanted to prepare resumes for the
Industry Career Day. In all, we helped 12 students prepare resumes.
Held a phone conference with Jeff Linden of WATCO Mechanical Services along with
Wayne Dillon to discuss internships for our welding students. Jeff will be getting back in
touch with us concerning the details of the internships by the first of April so that the
internships can start for our students this summer.
Attended ITec Advisory Meeting on 3/23 and was able to get 4 employees from Trinity to
attend to discuss their wants/needs from our Industrial Maintenance students.
Attended meeting at Trinity Industries with Jason Robertson and Maurice Warren on 3/23
to discuss internships/co-ops for welding and industrial maintenance students. Trinity has
advised us to set up a meeting where TSTC alone meets with the Trinity reps to set up the
internships and co-ops.
Had 3 job postings come from Mary Dorris.
Updated placement spreadsheet in the EHS program. Had a student from the fall semester
gain employment with a consultant in Nacogdoches.
Was asked by Bill Murrell and agreed to be part of the Pine Tree High School Career &
Technical Education Advisory Board. First meeting is set for April 5, 2011 at 7:30 AM at
PT H.S.
Police Dept.
Completed Risk Management Assessment
Scheduled Interviews for patrol officers for April 5th.
New Chief begins this Friday the first, Mr. Ken Long.
Officer Butler will return to assist with coverage the week of April 11th.
Marketing

Replacing missing shingles on housing roofs.

Audit was completed on Thursday, March 23, 2012, no errors.
Recording High school mid-term grades
Recording Corporate College grades.

Continuing placing college transcripts in alpha order and placing in fireproof file cabinets.
Recording transcript transfers on a daily basis.
Attending a conference meeting with Dana from systems and all the TSTC campuses
concerning problem with the on-line application for admissions on Tuesday, March 29,
2011.

STUDENT LEARNING
The fall 2011 schedule will be published with minimal diesel courses and will be updated
as soon as a new diesel instructor is hired.
Project Based Learning’s round two is beginning. The new group of mentors is
Stephanie Parsons, Jason Robertson and David Ferguson.
EDUCATION TECHNOLOGY
Bryan Maertins represented TSTC Marshall in attending the planning session for the
upcoming free annual summer DL conference with NETnet in Tyler to be held June 8th,
9th, and 10th at Tyler Junior College.
Dennis Burrer and Bryan Maertins attended the Microsoft SharePoint training session
for the coming TSTC Datatel Portal on: Wednesday, March 23rd and Thursday, March
24th in Waco.
PBL training for some of our grant ISD partners has been scheduled for June 20th and
21st.
Discussion of PBL project ongoing with all members of the Transportation and
Technology Division. 'First meeting held 3/22/11, with another on 3/29/11.
The following two books have been distributed to all division directors: Successful
Beginnings and Win Them Over: Dynamic Techniques for College Adjuncts and New
Faculty (These resources will be used to construct the framework for the second phase
of New Faculty Orientation).
WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT (COLLEEN HALUPA)
The 40 hour refresher course for Truck Driving will be open to all--not just to
Weatherford as it is currently. Students must have a current CDL and past employment
must be verified. The price will be $1000 with $150 per student coming to us. The
Weatherford contract price has been $800 with $122 coming to us.
Colleen Halupa will be developing a 2 hour online course for the CSA 2010 Truck Driving
Update. The per student cost will be $100. We will get $50 per student. We will be
offering the 2 hour CSA 2010 Truck Driving Update in house for $100 (we will get $20
per student). The curriculum has arrived and we will be deploying his course on May
1st. Weatherford will be sending their regional employees.
Colleen Halupa has been working with through Jill Grissett with Judge Perkins to see if
he can find a way to refer his child support clients to our truck driving program so they
can get employed and pay, rather than the state pay while they go to jail.
Got best and final offer request from TWC for the Entrepreneurship Training Grant.
This moves us up a notch in getting the grant.
The SECO grant got was finished even though there was a short deadline.
Motorcycle: working with a company to perform the motorcycle training for us. They
would just rent our range, classroom and storage.
Workforce Solutions East TX is working on procurement to fund their clients for the
assessment center.
The Workforce Instructor Coordinator position was posted and applicants will be
interviewed next week
LEARNING SUCCESS (APRIL GRAHAM)
The counselor position now reports to Student Learning.
Learning Success is moving forward in efforts to make math "real and relevant". Both
General Academics and Developmental Education are working on different elements of
math specific to students' programs of study.
April is working with the P-16 Council and Region VII in an attempt to get high schools
to award weighted GPA for dual credit coursework in the same vein as weighted GPA
for AP courses.
DESIGN, MANUFACTURING & TRANSPORTATION (WAYNE DILLION)
There have been four applicants for the diesel positions. Interviews will begin next
week.
Longview High School (LHS) Update: Four diesel classes will be taught at LHS. They are
short on training equipment and TSTC will be purchasing same. An over-the-road truck
may be donated to TSTC.
Tom Walker has been hired as the new CAD instructor.
The GIS program will be submitted to the Co-Board. There have been two meetings
with business and industry regarding same.
Wayne’s division will have a Project Based Learning (PBL) division project. They will
design and build a pipe bender.
INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY (TRAE ELMORE)
Trae Elmore will be a facilitator at the next technical programs common curricula and
skills validation workshop in Waco.
Stephanie Parsons’s final project class is working on wiring a classroom for the
Corporate College at the North Building.
FACILITIES
Slone was awarded contract for the four classrooms in the Transportation and
Technology Building. The HVAC trainers will be funded from Colleen Halupa’s account
at an approximate cost of $6000 and should be in by June.
