To learn more about working safely with lead paint, call 1-800-424-LEAD. 1. Wet down the paint before you sand or scrape to control lead dust. 2. Be careful when repainting–even if the top layer of paint is lead-free, older layers of lead paint may remain underneath. 3. One of the most effective ways to control lead dust is to vacuum thoroughly after repainting or remodeling. A vacuum with a HEPA filter works best. 4. When repainting or remodeling a home built before 1978, seal off the work space and keep children and pregnant women away from the area. 5. Don’t bring lead dust home with you. When you work with lead paint, clean your shoes and change your work clothes before going home. 6. After you finish a job that involves lead paint, scrub the floors, walls, window sills and other surfaces with soap and rinse with fresh water. 7. Conduct a lead dust test at the end of a job. Contact an environmental lab for a sampling kit or hire an independent lead professional.
