Temperature and Changes of State Lab
Due:
PROBLEM: What happens to the temperature of a substance as it changes from a
solid to liquid to gas?
RESEARCH: What do you already know about temperature and changes of state?

HYPOTHESIS: Draw a line on the graph provided, showing how you think the
temperature will change during the experiment.

PROCEDURE:
Part A: Ice to Water **Done by student
1. Read the following procedure and make a table on lined paper to record your
results.
2. Get crushed ice from teacher and put it in your beaker.
3. Place the thermometer in the beaker and record the temperature at 0 min.
4. Remove the thermometer and stir ice.
5. At 1 min, measure the temperature. Record in table.
6. Repeat steps 2-4 every minute until 5 min after the ice has melted.
Part B: Water to Steam ***Teacher demonstration
1. Read the following procedure and continue the table you made from Part A to
record your results for Part B. You will have 1 table of results when you are
done.
2. Fill glass flask with the melted water from Part A.
3. Draw a set-up of the apparatus. In the box below. Label the equipment.
4. Turn on the hot plate to heat the water.
5. Record the temperature every minute before the water begins to boil and for
5 min after it boils.
OBSERVATIONS: Attach the table of results for part A and B to this lab report.
CONCLUSION:
1. Create 1 line graph of temperature vs. time (like hypothesis), using the data
from your table in Part A and B. Plot the temperature recorded at each minute.
Don’t forget a title and labels. Attach the graph to this lab report.
Use the graph to answer the following questions:
2. What happened to the temperature when the ice was melting?

8. On the basis of your observations, do you agree with the following statement?
“When heat is added to a solid, the heat can cause a change of state or an
increase in temperature.”
