About Message Matrix
Welcome to the IELTS Message Matrix!
The Message Matrix is designed to make it easy for you to play your role in building a united global
IELTS brand by providing you with IELTS approved and sanctioned messages to use in creating
communication, marketing and promotional material in your local area. Many of the templates in
Brand Builder have a space for you to add messages. You can use the messages in this Message
Matrix for this. You must also use these messages in correspondence, speeches, presentations,
newsletters and anywhere else where you are promoting or talking about IELTS.
The set of messages in the Message Matrix represent a critical component of the IELTS brand.
With your commitment to using this Message Matrix we can ensure that IELTS speaks to our
customers and stakeholders with one united voice, no matter who they are and where they live.

How to use the Message Matrix
It’s simple! There are eight easy steps:
1. Choose the audience group with which you are communicating from the menu at the left;
click and a list of audiences will appear.
2. Select the audience with which you are communicating; click and another list will appear
offering core messages, messages for each of our four brand values, and call to action
messages.
3. Select core messages, and a list of messages will appear in the workspace.
4. To use all of these messages, click on copy to clipboard. To use some, but not all, of
these messages, highlight the messages you want to use, right click with your mouse and
select copy (you can also do this by using Ctrl+c on your keyboard). Remember: there is a
priority order for the messages which you must follow (see below for more on this).
5. Your messages are then ready to paste into a Brand Builder template or the other
material you are preparing.
6. You can use this same process to choose messages in any or all of the brand values
categories and paste these into your templates or materials. For example, to use
messages about the brand value of ‘secure’ select the ‘secure’ link in your audience group,
click on copy to clipboard to use all of these messages, or highlight and right click to
select the messages you want to use. Your messages are then ready to paste into a
Brand Builder template or the other material you are preparing.
7. Repeat this process until you have pasted all of the messages you wish to use into your
Brand Builder template or other material.
8. The final step is to click on call to action and use at least one of these messages to
complete your Brand Builder template or other material.
If you’re just after a headline or heading, rather than a set of messages, you can choose from a
list of straplines which are available by clicking on straplines in the left hand side menu. Choose
your audience group and the strapline you wish to use, and copy and paste as described above.
Choosing an audience group
The new IELTS brand is built around a new way of communicating with our three audience groups.
For each group we have developed unique messages:
those for test takers, divided into students and business people
those for test users, divided into universities and other education institutions, government
bodies and immigration departments, and commercial organisations and professional
associations
those for advocates and influencers, divided into ESL teachers and key opinion leaders.
2
Red – overarching message for each category; Green – first priority messages;
Blue – second priority messages; Black – third priority messages
Message order and priority
The IELTS messages for each audience group are categorised into the four IELTS brand qualities:
IELTS is SECURE
IELTS is GLOBAL
IELTS is AUTHENTIC
IELTS CARES.
Within each of these categories there are four levels of messages:
An overarching key message for each category. This message appears in red. You
MUST use this message if you are using messages in this category.
First priority messages. These messages appear in green. These messages capture the
critical proof points or explanations for each message category.
Second priority messages. These messages appear in blue. These messages provide
more information or explanation.
Third priority messages. These messages appear in black. These messages can be
used if additional and supporting information is needed.
You MUST also always use at least one CALL TO ACTION.
You MUST use the messages in the order in which they appear in the Message Matrix.
Message style
The messages have been crafted so that they can be directly lifted from the Message Matrix and
placed into documents to form sequential and logically flowing paragraphs.
The list of messages may seem quite long, but often the same fact, feature or benefit has been
expressed in one or more different ways. This is to help you refresh and renew your descriptive
language and to enable you to make choices about which kind of message is the most appropriate.
Some of the messages are more formal than others. They are of differing lengths and can be used
in multiple situations and combinations. You are encouraged to mix and match them and select
different points from different categories.
Straplines
Along with the messages, the Message Matrix also provides a series of straplines for you to use.
These are short, punchy phrases which are suitable for headings, headlines, advertising copy, call-
outs in copy-dense materials and merchandise items. Remember: these too are separated into
audience groups.
Valid and sanctioned
You must use the IELTS messages in the Message Matrix and the Brand Builder templates. No
other messages, content or copy is to be used unless it is approved by the marketing manager of
the British Council or IDP Australia.

manner. Candidates receive scores for each language skill (listening, reading, writing and

Candidates are assessed on a scale from Non User (1) to Expert User (9). Band Scores are
allocated a band descriptor profiling the language competence of the candidate.

The rigorous processes used to produce the test materials ensure that every version of the test is
of a comparable level of difficulty. This means that test takers’ results are consistent wherever and

communicate in English across all four language skills – listening, reading, writing and speaking.
IELTS builds on a heritage of four-skills testing developed over several decades.

In recognising IELTS scores, education institutions, government agencies, commercial
organisations and professional associations around the world are a part of an ever-expanding
international community.
IELTS is trusted and recognised by immigration authorities and government departments in almost
all English-speaking countries including Australia, Canada, New Zealand and the United Kingdom.
Institutions of further and higher education in all major English-speaking countries – and many
other countries worldwide – recognise and use IELTS scores. A listing of these institutions and the
scores they require is available on the IELTS website.
Examples:
• More than 2,000 American universities, colleges and faculties welcome IELTS for admissions
purposes, including seven out of the eight American Ivy League Colleges.
• The University Grants Committee in Hong Kong is using IELTS as an optional exit test for
students graduating from Hong Kong Universities.
• The Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools, USA, recognises IELTS for foreign
nurses who wish to register and practise in the US.

Authentic
Test takers and those relying on the results benefit from the authenticity of the IELTS tests – we
encourage, reflect and test the use of English for study, work and everyday life. You can be sure
that an IELTS score demonstrates real ability and is not the result of cramming for a written test.
IELTS uses a unique nine-point scoring system to measure and report test scores in a consistent
manner. Candidates receive scores for each language skill (listening, reading, writing and
speaking) and an Overall Band Score on a Band Scale from 1 to 9.
Candidates are assessed on a scale from Non User (1) to Expert User (9). Band Scores are
allocated a band descriptor profiling the language competence of the candidate.
IELTS is the original four-skills English language test and continues to maintain this lead, with over
one million IELTS tests conducted every year.
Since its launch in 1989, IELTS has pioneered English language testing, measuring ability to
communicate in English across all four language skills – listening, reading, writing and speaking.
IELTS builds on a heritage of four-skills testing developed over several decades.
IELTS is committed to ongoing research to maintain its validity and reliability.
IELTS results will tell you if a test taker’s English language proficiency fits your purpose: whether it
is for study, employment or migration.
The Speaking test involves a one-to-one interview with a certified examiner. It provides an
accurate assessment of ability to communicate effectively in English, not just to pronounce the
language and produce grammatical sentences. It is personal, interactive and as close to a real-life
situation as you can get.

Core Messages
IELTS is the world’s proven English language test.
You can trust IELTS to provide security in test delivery, test administration and test results.
It’s a truly global test which reflects and respects international diversity.
Thousands of education institutions, government agencies and professional organisations
throughout the world recognise IELTS scores as a trusted and valid indicator of ability to
communicate in English.
Test takers and those relying on the results benefit from the authenticity of the IELTS tests – we
encourage, reflect and test the use of English for study, work and life. You can be sure that an
IELTS score demonstrates real ability and is not the result of cramming for a written test.
IELTS cares for test takers, teachers and the people and organisations that use the test results.
IELTS is internationally available, internationally accessible, internationally recognised and
internationally focused. IELTS is the only internationally owned and globally recognised
assessment of English language proficiency. In every sense, IELTS is a truly global test.
Every aspect of the IELTS test – from test design and administration, to the marking and reporting
of results – is subject to the highest quality controls, security procedures and integrity management
practices.
The IELTS face-to-face Speaking test reflects a real-life teaching situation. This means that IELTS
gives an accurate assessment of ability to communicate effectively in English, not just to
pronounce the language and produce grammatical sentences.
IELTS is available to test takers in over 500 locations throughout the world, up to four times a
month, making it one of the most widely available English language tests. IELTS provides you with
access to a world of test takers – over one million each year!
Secure
You can trust IELTS to provide test results that are secure, reliable and understood.
The performance of each marker is regularly monitored and evaluated. Each marker is tested
every two years to retain their certification.
IELTS has a rigorous, quality-assured system for marking every IELTS test.

IELTS has also introduced an electronic bulk download facility where organisations can download
results for all IELTS candidates who want the organisation to recognise their result.
The IELTS integrated system of recruitment, training, benchmarking, certification and monitoring
for IELTS examiners ensures that they are fully qualified, experienced and effective, and provide a
standardised testing and assessment system around the world.
IELTS test centres are operated by the British Council, IDP: IELTS Australia or by independent
organisations that meet strict standards of quality, security and customer service.
The rigorous processes used to produce the test materials ensure that every version of the test is
of a comparable level of difficulty. This means that test takers’ results are consistent wherever and
whenever they take the test. IELTS scores are proven and valid regardless of the country of
testing.
The free IELTS Test Report Form Verification Service on our website enables IELTS recognising
organisations to authenticate Test Report Forms and safeguard against fraudulent report forms
using a safe and secure online database.
