March is National Nutrition Month! Learn about the connection between student health and learning with

In Our Schools March 27 at 1:00 p.m. on ETV. Using a coordinated school health approach, many

South Carolina public schools provide opportunities for students to learn and practice positive health

behaviors so they can be fit, healthy and ready to learn.

SC Healthy Schools is a partnership between the SC Department of Education and SC DHEC to improve

students’ health and academic outcomes by increasing physical activity, improving nutrition and

preventing tobacco use and HIV among elementary, middle and high school students. Working with ITV

and ETV, SC Healthy Schools has documented the efforts of South Carolina school districts, schools and

their community partners to implement best practices, programs and policies that support student health.

The first part of In Our Schools features a special segment entitled Working Together for Health and

Learning: A Coordinated Approach to School Health that was also produced in partnership with the

National Center for Disease Control (CDC). To reach academic goals, schools, families and communities

must address the needs of the whole child. This segment discusses the CDC coordinated school health

model and how coordination among the eight components – Health Education, Physical Education,

Health Services, Nutrition Services, Counseling, Psychological and Social Services, Health Promoting

Environment, Health Promotion for Staff, and Family/Community Involvement – can help students

establish healthful behaviors and attitudes.

After outlining this successful coordinated approach, In Our Schools will visit Easterling Primary

School in Marion School District Seven to hear from administrators and staff about programs and

activities they have implemented to create a health-promoting environment. Learn about the CATCH

program, a staff-wellness program and how these activities have benefited students and educators at

this school. Be sure to access this program for your district and school administrators, health educators,

classroom teachers, parents, and community partners.

that technology is an essential component of today’s students’ skill set, calling them “digital natives.” And

tools like StreamlineSC and Knowitall.org allow her to actively engage students in the learning process to

create successful learners. Through her teaching and this experience as our SC Teacher of the Year,

OnePlaceSC.org …

The Latest News and Info about “K–12 Instructional Media” Channel

One User Name, One Password and One Integrated Search

During our many hands-on training sessions, we constantly hear from teachers and others …”just give

me OnePlace to go, to get what I need.” They insist they can’t keep up with all the different TV channels,

the programs on those channels and the resources that accompany the channels. Not to mention having

to learn if the material is appropriate for the students or incorporates curriculum standards. Then, there

is StreamlineSC, which is usually a life saver in that it searches all those areas, but sometimes even

StreamlineSC just doesn’t have what they need.

So, they expand the search visiting ITV, DISCUS, Thinkfinity, the many ETV/PBS web sites, and so forth

and so on…Heck, we only have 15 minutes of planning…and don’t even start bugging us about the

professional development and recertification requirements looming over our shoulders!

We empathize…and offer you some help - OnePlaceSC http://oneplacesc.org with the same user

name and password as StreamlineSC. OnePlaceSC empowers teachers to search a variety of qualified

educational content sites with one integrated search in order to acquire the resources they need.

Teachers no longer have to maintain knowledge of the vast numbers of educational Web sites or

remember multiple usernames and passwords to access educational content. This "one-stop

instructional supermarket" gives teachers and staff the resources they need to solve the educational

challenges they face every day.

So, you can search all the Web sites at once and the professional development is right there too…”nice,”

but what about all these TV channels, analog, digital, streaming…how do we know what’s on them, when

do they air and, more importantly, how do we record it and access when needed. The TV search is listed

right alongside all the Web sites and is called “ITV & ETV Programs.” Enter a key word, search and all

the relevant programs aired on ITV, PBS, the SC Channel, ETV World, and our newest channel “K–12

Instructional Media” (ITV/ETV produced programs as well as some resources from national

distributors). You’ll find descriptions, channels, dates, and times for you to check out.

After you find what you need, contact your media specialist or local district Digital Education Service

(DES) personnel, asking them to record. A DES link can be found under the ETV TV guide at the top of

the OnePlaceSC page http://www.scetv.org/education/des/contacts.cfm. These great folks are your

link to this technology and they can let you know how to get the program(s) to your classroom.

Now, if you would prefer some training, we can provide that too! Please contact ETV at 800-277-3245 or

visit http://oneplacesc.org for all the contact information.

NEW Series: Nature Comes Back–25 Years After Chernobyl

Twenty-five years ago on April 26, 1986, the largest nuclear disaster in history took place in the Soviet

Union. ITV, part of the SC Department of Education’s Office of eLearning, has worked with the University

of South Carolina and produced in partnership with SCETV three programs in a NEW series entitled

Nature Comes Back – 25 Years After Chernobyl. This series will “pull back the curtain” with a special

panel of experts, including naturalists, scientists, journalists, and historians, to allow students to learn

about the effects Chernobyl had on the nature, nuclear science, US-Soviet relations, and the people who

worked there and called it home.

Rare photos and video captured by South Carolina ETV in partnership with the University of South

Carolina will take students across the world to an area that was devastated by an accident of

catastrophic proportions, but, over time the people and nature have returned.

Hosted by ETV’s Mark Quinn, the outstanding participants in the new series include:

 Charles Bierbauer, Dean of USC’s College of Mass Communications and Information Studies, who was

CNN’s senior White House correspondent in 1986 at the time of the Chernobyl incident and reported on

President Reagan’s trip to Indonesia and Japan as Chernobyl’s radiation cloud drifted across two continents.

 Dr. Tim Mousseau, USC Professor of Biological Sciences, who has made numerous trips to Chernobyl to

study the impact of radioactive contaminants on the area and is a leading authority on the impact of

radioactivity on birds and insects in the area surrounding Chernobyl.

 Dr. Gordon B. Smith, USC Professor of Political Science and Director of the Walker Institute of International

and Area Studies, who is a noted authority on Russian politics and author of numerous books including “Soviet

Politics: Struggling with Change” and “State-Building in Russia.”

 Dr. Eduardo B. Farfan, Principal Engineer in Environmental Studies and Biotechnology at Savannah River

National Laboratory, who worked with the Chernobyl Center’s International Radioecology Laboratory and lived

in nearby Belarus for five years.

 Sherry Beasley, Grants Director and Foundations Coordinator for the Clemson University Provost, who made

four trips to Chernobyl to chronicle and report on the activities in the area and wrote feature articles for The

State and other media.

 Allen Sharpe, Director of Photography for ETV’s NatureScene, whose photographs from his visit as part of the

ETV crew that produced programs in Chernobyl and Kiev are used in the programs.

 Rudy Mancke, Naturalist-in-Residence at USC, who was the naturalist on ETV’s series NatureScene that

aired nationally on PBS for twenty-five years and who made four trips to Chernobyl to document the natural

history.

The three thirty-minute programs along with ETV’s NatureScene programs on Chernobyl and Kiev will

air on ETV and in the ITV schedule in April around the anniversary of this devastating event. Featured in

the programs are footage and photos from when NatureScene visited the site of the reactor in 2003 and

then traveled to the nearby capital city of Kiev to look at human and natural history.

“I think we had an incredible opportunity that most people couldn’t have because we were able to take

our camera to see what other people hadn’t seen before,” Rudy Mancke, naturalist and host of

NatureScene, said. “We had the support of the Ukrainian government and, I believe, our program on

Chernobyl is the only thirty-minute program on the Natural History – looking at the plants and animals - of

the event that has been done.”

Chernobyl was evacuated and fenced in to keep people out. But since April 26, 1986, nature has shown

its resiliency with the plants and animals returning to the deserted site. And, re-settlers have returned

too. In Kiev about 60 miles away, the ETV crew got to see how plants with American “roots” were thriving

while they looked at the history of the capital city and how it was also impacted by the reactor disaster.

The schedule for the broadcasts will be announced in the April edition of the ITV Update. Plan to

access these five, special programs - Nature Comes Back–25 Years After Chernobyl and

NatureScene: Chernobyl and Kiev - for your high school world history teachers, but they can also be

valuable for science curriculum. For more information, contact Bette Jamison at bjamison@scetv.org.

Idella Bodie’s SC Women for Women’s History Month

Dorcas Richardson (NEW)

Repeats March 1 and 3, 8:00–8:50 a.m. Channel 1

Dr. Anne Austin Young (NEW)

Repeats March 1 and 3, 8:56–9:50 a.m. Channel 1

Special block feed of ALL ten lessons in series on Channel 1

Lessons 1–8 March 14, 10:05 a.m.–3:04 p.m. and Lessons 9–10 March 15, 8:00–9:50 a.m.

(ALL with unlimited rights) The teacher’s guide is being updated to include new lessons!

The two NEW programs about Dorcas Richardson and Dr. Anne Austin Young aired for the first time in

February. For Women’s History Month, ITV repeats both NEW programs and then all ten programs in the

Idella Bodie’s SC Women series that has been produced by ITV and ETV. These dramatizations have

been adapted from the book South Carolina Women with permission and input from author Idella Bodie,

a native South Carolinian. Recommended to support social studies standards for South Carolina history

for elementary and middle grade students, the programs are also good for use during Women’s History

Month with students in grades 3–12. Each dramatization tells the story of women who have shaped

South Carolina history and politics and were produced on location at SC historical sites and homes.

Program Nine - Dorcas Richardson*

The movie The Patriot was based loosely on Francis Marion fighting Banastre Tarleton in South Carolina

during the Revolutionary War. The Dorcas Richardson program tells the true story about one of Francis

Marion’s men, Richard Richardson, his wife Dorcas and their “battle” with Colonel Tarleton. Captain

Richardson served under Francis Marion, better known as the Swamp Fox. After six years of fighting,

Richard was left scarred from small pox and when he and his escort returned to his home, he discovered

that Marion’s enemy Tarleton was there, holding his wife Dorcas prisoner. This story depicts the courage

and steadfast love of Dorcas Richardson for her family and her newly formed nation. Despite tremendous

effort by Tarleton to force Dorcas into betraying her husband’s whereabouts, she remained true to both

her husband and the American cause. Taped at Historic Camden, this story takes us back in time to

where South Carolinians fought each other and the British. (* Please preview before use.)

Program Ten - Dr. Anne Austin Young

Dr. Anne Austin Young fought the norm that women could not be at the top of their college class nor

become a medical doctor. Anne was one of the first female doctors in South Carolina to practice

medicine. This story covers her humble beginnings to later in life being inducted into the South Carolina

Hall of Fame. Despite prejudice from both her family and community, Anne proved that women could

succeed. Taped on location at several sites throughout the state, this drama inspires young people to

achieve, despite any odds or prejudice. Dr. Anne Austin Young had many battles to win before being

allowed into medical school. Even upon graduation, she faced prejudice that she wasn’t good enough

just because she was a woman. This story shows the many trials she encountered and worked to

overcome in order to follow her dream.

6

Other Programs in ITV’s Idella Bodie’s SC Women Series

*Special block feed of ALL ten lessons in series on channel 1

Lessons 1–8 March 14, 10:05–3:04 p.m. and Lessons 9–10 March 15, 8:00–9:50 a.m.

(ALL with unlimited rights) The teacher’s guide is being updated to include new lessons!

Program One – Grace and Rachel Martin

This is the story of two sisters-in-law living alone in the South Carolina back country who waylaid a

British Courier with valuable papers by dressing up as colonial men. They risked their lives to stop the

flow of information. Taped on location with historical costumes and artifacts, it takes place in the cabin

considered to be the oldest frontier house still standing in SC.

Program Two – Emily Geiger

Emily is a young girl who risked her life by serving as a messenger for the Colonial army during the

Revolutionary War. Captured by the British and interrogated as a spy, she managed to trick Lord

Rawdon into believing she was innocent, outwitting her captors in a most unique manner. Taped in part

at the actual location where the interrogation took place, this drama covers the story of Emily’s journey

from her assignment with General Greene to her release by Lord Rawdon.

Program Three – Mary Chesnut

Mary kept a diary during the turbulent times of the Civil War. This drama portrays various events in the

life of the South Carolina heroine prior to and during the Civil War. The events dramatized are actual

happenings that occurred to Mary and most of the words come straight from her diary. Mary actually

spent time at Kensington Plantation, the location of the drama.

Program Four – The Grimké Sisters

Sarah Moore Grimké (1792–1873) and Angelina Emily Grimké (1805–1879), followed a similar path,

speaking out about what they believed and leaving their home to join the fight for the causes of the

abolition of slavery and equal rights for women. Today women are leaders in the community and in the

business world, working along side their male counterparts in voicing and making their decisions, but it

was not the same in the 1800’s. These two sisters helped lead the way to change the course of history.

From a young age they both stood up for what they believed were the wrongs of society. They spoke out

against slavery, finding the courage to fight for their right to have a voice.

Program Five – Wil Lou Gray

Tells the story of Dr. Wil Lou Gray who began the South Carolina Opportunity School. The program

follows her from the time that she was a young girl struggling with the loss of her dear mother through Dr.

Gray’s valiant efforts to get the Legislature to fund schooling for illiterate adults and children. Through

reenactment of scenes in her life and interviews taped with Dr. Gray by ETV in the 1980’s, we hear in Dr.

Gray’s own words her passion to help others to learn while we learn about what life was like during the

early 1900’s for many South Carolinians.

Program Six – Mary McLeod Bethune

This is the story of one woman’s struggle to gain equality for herself and her students. The drama begins

with Mary as a young child growing up in rural South Carolina and concludes with her hard work to start

a school for African American students in Florida. The struggle that Mary encountered just to be given

the chance to learn to read and then to teach others, including being threatened with bodily harm is

shown. The drama shows how she started with nothing and ended up being an advisor to a President!

Program Seven – Modjeska Simkins

This is the story of an African American girl born to a half-white, half-black brick mason. She came from

relative wealth and married into wealth, but dedicated her life to helping the disadvantaged to be treated

equally. She was one of the organizers of the Supreme Court Case Briggs Vs. Elliott, which was the first

filed of the four cases that later became combined Brown vs. Board of Education.

Program Eight – Mary Gordon Ellis

Mary Gordon Ellis was the first female to be elected to the South Carolina Legislature. This drama

depicts her life from the challenges of being the school superintendent of Jasper County Schools where

she addressed equality, making bold changes to impact education, to her time in office as an elected

official until her untimely death at an early age.

NOTE: See description for NEW programs nine and ten on previous page - are in block feed.

The World of Julia Peterkin: Cheating the Stillness

Repeats March 7 and 14, 9:00–9:59 a.m. Channel 1 (Unlimited rights) Available in StreamlineSC

Presented nationwide last April by ETV and now part of the ITV series ETV Presents, this program

chronicles the life of Julia Peterkin, South Carolina author and 1929 Pulitzer Prize in Fiction for Scarlet

Sister Mary that was set in a South Carolina African-American farming community. Her tales of

struggling black families captivated America. Trying to choose between life as a New York writer and as

a plantation mistress in SC, Peterkin rebelled against what was expected of a Southern Lady.

ETV’s Carolina Stories – Programs Feature Special Women

 Modjeska Monteith Simkins – Makin’ A Way Out of No Way

Repeats March 7, 10:05–11:03 a.m. Channel 1 (Unlimited rights)

Modjeska Monteith Simkins (1899–1992) was one South Carolina’s great women. Entitled Modjeska Monteith

Simkins – Makin’ A Way Out of No Way, this program paints an interesting profile of the civil rights matriarch and

human rights activist and was produced by ETV’s Beryl Dakers. Born in Columbia, Modjeska graduated from

Benedict College in 1921 and taught school before she was married in 1929. She had to quit her job because at

that time SC schools could not employ married women, but she continued to work at different jobs to make a

difference by representing the needs of the African-American community. In the 1940s and 1950s, she helped

create over a hundred branches of the NAACP around our state. She believed that the best way to make change

was to vote so she made sure people knew about their voting rights and participated in elections. For the rest of

her life, she dedicated herself to the idea of civil rights and opportunity for all people.

 This is Brookgreen Gardens

Repeats March 7, 11:08 a.m.–12:05 p.m. Channel 1 (Unlimited rights)

This ETV program that aired for the first time in February 2008 explores one of the state’s most beloved landmarks!

A distinctive collection of American figurative sculpture, education programs, dazzling gardens, rare natural

habitats, and a long, fascinating history make Brookgreen Gardens a unique treasure. The program highlights artist

and philanthropist Anna Hyatt Huntington’s life and works, outlining the path that she and her equally famous

husband took to create Brookgreen Gardens and populate the coastal plantation with art, not only created by Mrs.

Huntington, but by artists from throughout the world. Their home, the gardens and the sculpture are the focus of the

Colonial Williamsburg Electronic Field Trips 2010–11

Premiere: Women of the Revolution March 10 on ETV & ITV

The CWEFT programs use 21st century technology to enrich the teaching of history and social studies,

making the subjects exciting and relevant to today’s classrooms. The field trips are correlated to national

standards and provide a dramatic and compelling learning experience for 4th and 5th grade students.

Though schools may view the programs free and record them with 10-day fair use rights (can tape and

use for 10 days from broadcast date, but must erase tape within 45 days), there are definite advantages

to paying the fee to Colonial Williamsburg to participate.

By paying the fee to participate, schools get the outstanding teacher materials, get to keep the recorded

program for the life of the tape and have access to the re-enactors and historians online and via a toll-

free number. Schools pay approximately $500 per school for all seven programs, but rights for individual

programs can be purchased. For information on paying the fee to participate in CWEFT, contact Dale

Van Eck at CWEFT 1-800-761-8331 or dvaneck@cwf.org.

Congratulations to Robin Chandler at Cleveland Elementary in Spartanburg School
