South Korea's Hi-Tech Shipbuilding
Well, high-tech is also transforming some old industries in South Korea.
Take a look at shipbuilders. Once considered a laughingstock when they set out, they are now
among the world leaders in this area. As Eunice Yoon reports, as China starts to float its own
boats, the Koreans are turning to tech for an edge. This may not look like advanced technology,
but it is.
Here at the biggest shipyard in the world, owned by South Korea's Hyundai Heavy, the ships are
made of old-fashioned steel, but many of these giant parts are welded together using robots and
lasers. It’s high-tech equipment like this that Hyundai hopes will keep rivals in its wake.

So, we should maintain our superiority in technology. South Korea shipbuilders got off the ground
in the 1970s,when Hyundai first built this shipyard. Though mocked by industry experts for its
inexperience, Hyundai quickly became a huge success by using cheap labor and a nearly militant
work ethic. Today, South Korea is the largest shipbuilding nation,
finishing a new ship every four days.
But the industry could soon be on the ropes.

And the reason behind it is that they have a huge customer base by themselves; and the
secondly, still their labor cost is cheaper and, third, they want to be global number one
leader. They are aiming at year 2015. Hyundai has no intention of giving up control. The
company is investing in new designs, testing small scale models at this research lab.
We are making the ships faster, bigger and more fuel-efficient. Streamlining the building
process is key, too. Engineers cut the time it takes to make a ship by packing pipes and
wires into blocks, some as big as apartment buildings, before these mega-chunks are stuck
together at a nearby dock. And nearly all the parts are made here.
Hyundai Heavy is one of the few shipbuilders that actually makes its own engines right at its
shipyard. These engines work like regular car engines except that they're five stories high.
Hyundai is also moving into vessels that can double as oil rigs and is starting to build these
mammoth ships on land ㅡ a unique practice that allows these workers to produce even
more ships, faster. Right now, we are under the ship. This system uses compressed air to
lift ships
and slide them effortlessly into the sea. It's just one of the many technologies Hyundai
hopes will propel its business to new heights. Eunice Yoon, CNN, Busan, South Korea.
