Grading Procedures
Mrs. Lilja’s 6th Grade Math Class
School Year 2011/2012
Your grade in math class is earned by accumulating points for tests, quizzes, homework, class work,
notes, projects and math facts. These points are then figured as a percent. The following grading scale
is used:
100% A+ 83-84% C+
95-99% A 79-82% C
93-94% A- 77-78% C-
91-92% B+ 75-76% D+
87-90% B 72-74% D
85-86% B- 70-71% D-
The following criteria are used to determine your grades:
1. Homework:
There will be two types of homework assignments: Effort and In-Class. Each nightly
homework assignment will be checked for completion in class and recorded in the grade
book. Time will be given for answering questions about the homework. In order to
receive full credit on an assignment, all work must be shown. If an answer is not
accompanied by work, full credit will not be given. Each of the nightly assignments is
effort based and a 1 will represent its full completion in the gradebook. Each week and
in-class homework assignment will be given similar to the nighty homework problems.
The in-class homework assignment is worth 10 points and corrections will be allowed
immediately following return. Study Guides will be assigned before the chapter test.
All assignments must be done in pencil. Please do not use pen, markers, etc. Any
assignment not done in pencil will receive no credit. All homework is to be kept in your
math binder.
2. Class Notes:
You will be required to take notes in class on a regular basis. In order to fully understand
what you need to do for homework and to study for tests, your class notes will be very
important. Notebook checks may take place every couple of weeks and points will be
given for lesson notes.
3. Quizzes:
Quizzes can vary in points and may be given several times within a unit/chapter. These
quizzes will help prepare you for the chapter test. Quizzes may be announced at least
one day ahead of time, although short pop quizzes are not unheard of. They will focus on
information covered over a short period of time or may be some part of the unit/chapter
that needs to be memorized.
4. Tests:
A final test will be given at the end of each unit/chapter. Expect to spend at least two
class periods reviewing material before the test. Test dates will be announced 3 to 4 days
in advance. In many cases, tests corrections will be allowed, but they must follow a
specified format. Students may only receive up to half their points back by doing test
corrections and only up to 99%.
5. Math Notebooks:
Each student is expected to keep a math notebook (3-ring binder). All class work, notes,
and homework should be kept in this notebook. (Homework may be taken out after
each test.)
6. Projects:
Projects will be assigned randomly throughout the year and will vary in topic and design.
Projects will be a part of your homework grade.
7. Math Facts:
Multiplication and Division facts must be studied each week for 10 minutes a day on any
five days and signed by a parent. Fact sheets without a signature will result in no points
received! Fact Study Sheets are always due the first school day of the week. Each
student will take a timed test each week to show their knowledge of math facts. When a
student gets 100% on 3 out of 4 timed tests in a row, they will no longer need to take the
timed test or do the facts sheet for that skill.
Your final grade is figured as follows:
Math Fact Sheet (green sheet) 5%
Homework Effort 10%
In-Class Homework 45%
Quizzes and Tests 40%
Total……………………….100%
Late Work
Students are expected to complete their homework daily. Since daily homework is effort based,
there will be no lates accepted. If in-class homework is not completed in-class it my be finished
at home, but must be returned on the following school day. If it is not, it will be completed on
that following day during an open time or at recess. There will be no lates. Anything not
completed on in-class homework will be marked as incorrect. Math Fact Sheets will be
accepted only 1 day late and at 1 point less than earned. Late projects will be graded down one
letter grade per day late, and will not be accepted after 5 days late.
If You are Absent
For each day you were absent, you have that many days to make up the work. Remember, it is
your responsibility to check with the teacher about any questions you have regarding
missed assignments.
Textbooks
To protect and maintain your math books, it is expected that they will remain covered
throughout the year.
