Number two ranked Venus Williams was upset by Nadia Petrova in the 2010

French Open, losing 6-4 and 6-3 in straight sets to the 19ith ranked

Petrova. Many thought this would be the year that Williams would compete

for the French title, but Petrova put at end to those thoughts, as she

was in control for the entire match. Williams was quick to blame the

conditions, complaining about the mid 50s weather and the wind that

reached 15 miles an hour. Williams, however, should have blamed either

herself, or her opponent. Petrova was sharp for the entire match, playing

consistently, and never really putting herself into a position that would

allow Venus back into the match.

Williams is usually at her best when she is showing emotion, and able

to smoke her forehand hard down the court. This did not translate well to

clay, where she has typically been unsuccessful. Williams has won 7

majors, but has only made the French Open final once, losing to sister

Serena in 2002. It is growing more, and more likely, that Venus will not

win this major in her career. Instead of blaming it on Venus, let's

give credit where it is due to Petrova. Coming into the match with Venus,

she had a 3-18 record against players in the top 10 in the majors. She

also had lost four straight against Venus. However, she capitalized on

the fact that Venus only hit 15 winners in the entire match, and she

recovered from an almost costly error on her first match point, by

smoking a forehand winner to win the match. Petrova could be a

surprise winner to this event. If, in the event, she is matched up with

Venus' sister Serena, it may not be as big of a mismatch as you would

thing, as she just defeated Serena last month in Madrid. Petrova was also

the girls junior champion at Roland Garros, having won that title in

1998. Venus Williams might have felt comfortable to blame the

conditions. However, normally a true champion, it would have been better

for her to just admit that she was not the better player on this day,

instead of coming up with excuses for why she couldn't get the job done.
