There can be many reasons why a particular product, boys name, holiday
resort, christmas present, car, song or color can become a favourite of
many. What is the reason for this ?. What is it in particular that
makes something a favorite?. For more than fifty years,
Omegawatches have been the favourite wristwatch of many wearers.
These watches are built to the highest standards one can imagine, being
fully waterproof, with a substantial stainless steel case, breakproof
glass and so on. But one of the main reasons Omegawatches are chosen
by so many is most probably due to the simple fact that they are an
Omega. It could also be likely that Omegawatches are so popular because of
their connection with the American Space Program: NASA has repeatedly
endorsed them through the wearing of these timepieces by various
astronauts. There is a very lengthy list of space flights that have
been accompanied by astronauts sporting Omegawatches, from Mercury
Astronaut Wally Schirra in the early sixties, to the ultimate, and
probably most famous of all, Buzz Aldrin and Neil Armstrong on the moon.
Although Aldrin wore his Omega Speedmaster during his moonwalk, Neil
Armstrong left his back in the lunar lander, where it was secured to the
control unit to be used in case of an emergency. Ever since, these
particular watches are also recognized by the name Moon Watch. It
was during the ill fated 13th Apollo trip to the moon that Omegawatches
came to the rescue. At 55 hours into the mission (ironically on 13th
April, 1970) there was an explosion in the liquid oxygen tanks. The
astronauts had to solve various unexpected problems that arose if they
were to stay alive for the duration of the flight. Crucially, the
thruster had to be fired to alter course, and this couldn't be done by
computer. If this action wasn't completed to within a fraction of a
second, they would never make it home. What did they use to measure this?
Commander Jim Lovell's Omega Speedmaster watch. The engine fired
accurately, and the astronauts were saved. It's noted that all
Cosmonauts in Russia have been given the Omega Speedmaster to use on all
future missions. Since 1848 Omega have produced all their watches in
Switzerland. Omegawatches are one of the best known brands on the planet.
The watch was the first used on the moon mission, it also replaced the
original in the Bond film Golden Eye. The famous actor Pierce Brosnan
was also seen wearing an Omega Seamaster. The Seamaster has also been
seen on the wrist of the new Bond actor Daniel Craig. All of these events
have been remembered by Omega with the issue of special Commemorative
Editions of each model in question. Omega hold on to being official
timers of most Olympics. Prominent devotees of Omegawatches include
President John F Kennedy and Great Britain's Prince William. Omega
possess a museum adjacent to their centre of operations. It's a really
interesting location in which you will discover in excess of 4000
omegawatches. In addition to being the resting place of the earliest
watchmakers work surface utilized by the originator of the business in
1894, you can see a variety of watches that have been genuinely flown
into space, with a few that in earlier times belonged to Royalty.
