Women making discoveries and being recognized for the same in the18th
Century was not a very common situation. It was during this period that
Caroline Lucretia Herschel discovered eight comets and fourteen nebulae
that brought her fame and success. She received many famous awards and
laurels like the gold medal from the Royal Astronomical society in
Britain for her important discoveries. To honor her and her inventions an
asteroid was named after her and is known by the name 281 Lucretia.
Just like Lucretia, over the centuries women inventors and inventions
have left a significant mark on the world. Some of them are Mary Dixon
Kites, who founded the basic process behind the weaving of straw using
silk or thread in 1980. Her, this invention made her the first woman in
the United States to receive a patent under her name. The next in the
line is Sarah Mather who invented the submarine telescope and lamp. Her
invention was widely used to get an estimate on the depth of the ocean.
Mary Anderson is another American woman who proved her worth for women
inventors and inventions. She invented the windshield wipers in 1903 that
got her a patent under her name in 1905. She noticed that people had a
tough time cleaning the windshields of their cars especially during rains
and during times of snow. This led her to think of a system that could be
operated by pressing a button sitting inside the car. This led to the
invention of windshield, certainly very useful and important discovery.
The first dishwasher used to wash dirty dishes was invented by a woman
named Josephine Cochran in the year 1893. The first folding cabinet
bed was invented by Sarah E Goode. She was also the first African
American woman to secure a patent to her name in the year 1885 for the
same. The specialty of this folding cabinet bed was that it could be used
as a writing desk with all the required compartments for writing supplies
and stationery during the day and turned into a bed during night. This
was a perfect example of utilization of space. Katharina Paulus a
German pilot has lots of achievements to her name. First she was the
first woman to become a professionally licensed pilot in Germany. She was
the first one to develop a parachute that could be folded and stored
inside a bag. Intentional breakaway was yet another invention by Paulus.
With this invention she was able to introduce a system to where a small
parachute would be opened first and then the next parachute would open
up. With her this invention she was able to save lives of many people
during the First World War. Dr Enrique Ostrea was the first one to
invent a system with the help of which a it was possible to detect if the
unborn fetus had been exposed to any form of alcohol or drugs during the
course of the pregnancy. Though basically from Filipino, she moved to USA
in the year 1968. Related Articles - women inventors and inventions,
