The discovery of eight comets and fourteen nebulae was
done by Caroline Lucretia Herschel between 1786 and 1797. This famous
discovery had brought her many famous awards and laurels like the gold
medal from the Royal Astronomical society in Britain. An asteroid has
named after her and this is known by the name of 281 Lucretia. Women
inventors and inventions proved that the next three decades will lead to
the liberalization of the woman.
The basic process behind the weaving of straw using silk or thread was
founded in the year 1809 by Mary Dixon Kites. She was the first woman in
the United States who had managed to secure a patent under her own name.
The next woman to make a mark in her own field of interest was Sarah
Mather who invented the submarine telescope and lamp which was used by
the submarines in order to get an idea regarding the depth of the ocean.
The windshield wiper was another famous invention which was made
available to the world in 1903 by a woman named Mary Anderson. She
managed to secure a patent for these windshield wipers in her own name by
the year 1905 and proved her worth for women inventors and inventions.
The main reason behind this discovery was that Anderson had noticed how
people driving cars in the city of New York were struggling to clean the
windshields of their cars after opening the car windows especially during
the rains and during times of snow. This lead her to think that a device
which can be operated by pressing a button sitting inside the car should
be made available so that the windshield will get cleaned automatically
when the button has been pressed. The first dishwasher used to wash dirty
dishes was invented by a woman named Josephine Cochran in the year
1893.
The first woman of African American origin to secure a patent in her
own name was Sarah E Goode. She had secured this patent in the year 1885
for inventing the folding cabinet bed. This bed could be folded up in the
morning and used a writing desk with all the required compartments for
writing supplies and stationery during the course of the day. At the end
of the day it could be folded and turned into a bed.
The first woman to become a professionally licensed pilot in Germany
was Katharina Paulus. Paulus created the parachute packet in the year
1913. The parachute could be folded and stored inside a bag. This
invention of hers had helped her to earn a medal during the First World
War especially since it had helped in preventing the loss of many lives
during that time. The intentional breakaway was another invention which
was introduced to the world by Paulus. This was a system where a small
parachute would be opened first and this would enable the next parachute
also to get opened.
A Filipino doctor named Dr Enrique Ostrea invented a system of medical
testing where it was possible to detect if the unborn fetus had been
exposed to any form of alcohol or drugs during the course of the
pregnancy. She moved to the United States of America in the year 1968. A
scientist from Vietnam named Tuan Vo-Dinh invented a badge which made it
possible to know the exposure of a person to any kind of toxic
chemicals.
