Project Summary

ESMA is a cross European project with 14

participants from 9 countries.

Its aims are

• To maximise the energy efficiency benefits of Article

13 of the Energy Services Directive through

customer feedback

• To reach consensus on the energy efficiency and

sustainability benefits of smart metering

• To identify and disseminate best practice

• To provide a forum for stakeholders to come

together, resolve issues and share knowledge

• To report on smart metering progress to the

European Commission

Supported by

Background

There is an urgent need to reduce residential energy consumption.

Trials have shown that customers can save up to 15% of their

energy if they receive real time feedback from their meters, a

feature of Smart Metering. But these results are not consistent

and ESMA aims to identify and spread best practice to deliver the

maximum energy efficiency benefits from the installation of smart

metering. Smart metering can be used for all customers with a

metered supply of electricity, gas, heat and water.

Governments are currently implementing Article 13 of the Energy

Services Directive which requires customers to be given more

information about their energy consumption. ESMA is working to

provide governments with the information they need to make the

most of smart metering.
