                 2a
 Write an introduction for the lab (Exercise 2a). Include:
    – Two to three sentences about why “catalase” is important.
      (use lab manual or internet)
    – One paragraph about how enzymes work, and how they
      are affected by, salt, pH, temperature.
    – Identify the universal substrate for all of the reactions in
      this lab. Identify one product.
    – Be prepared to perform exercise 2a with your table.

   notebook.

– (1) Mortar and Pestle

– (1) 5mL syringe

– (1) 10mL syringe

– (1) Plastic Canister with Lid

– (3) Dixie Cups
   Pre-Lab for Procedure 2b, 2c
• Write an introduction for tomorrow’s lab
  procedure (Exercise 2b and 2c). Include:
  – A sentence or two about the importance of sulfuric
    acid and potassium permanganate to the
    experiment
  – Explain how Exercises 2b and 2c will serve as
    controls for the ultimate experiment in 2d
  – Be prepared to perform exercises 2b and 2c with
    your table.

• (1) ring stand with clamp, burette, and stopcock

• (1) 50mL syringe labeled “KMnO4” or “K”

• (1) 10mL syringe labeled “H2O2” or “H”

• (1) 10mL syringe labeled “H2SO4” or “S”

• (1) 5mL syringe labeled “Catalase” or “C”

• (1) 5mL syringe labeled “Transfer” or “T”

• (1) small dixie cup

• (1) large dixie cup

             Modified Procedure 2d
1. Label six SMALL dixie cups “10”, 30, 60, 120, 180, 360

2. Place 10mL H2SO4 in each of the small dixie cups

3. Place 60mL H2O2 in a LARGE dixie cup

4. Simultaneously: add 6mL catalase to LARGE dixie cup, swirl cup,
   begin timing the reaction.

5. Remove a 10mL sample of the reaction at 10 seconds, 30, 60, 120,
   180, and 360 seconds, and add them immediately to the
   appropriately labeled small dixie cup.

6. Titrate each small dixie cup with KMnO4 and enter data into table
   2.1 on your paper.
