Born on January 8, 1942, Stephen Hawking has become
one of the most brilliant men to walk the earth. The English
theoretical physicist and cosmologist has gone on to achieve tremendous
things in life through countless awards, Universities and books.

It is his scientific books and numerous public appearances that have
made him an academic celebrity and icon over the years. He has become
an Honorary Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, a lifetime member of the
Pontifical Academy of Sciences, and just a couple of years ago he was
awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, which is the highest civilian
award in the United States.

To say that he has lived life to the fullest and achieved great things
is an drastic understatement. Stephen Hawking was the Lucasian
Professor of Mathematics at the University of Cambridge for a remarkable
thirty years. This stint lasted from 1979 to October 1, 2009 when he
decided to call it quits.

Of course, this was not quite to work as he has long had a tremendous
work ethic. He now holds the position of Director of Research at the
Centre for Theoretical Cosmology in the Department of Applied Mathematics
and Theoretical Physics at the University of Cambridge.

On top of this, Hawking is also a fellow of Gonville and Caius
College, Cambridge and a Distinguished Research Chair at the Perimeter
Institute for Theoretical Physics in Waterloo, Ontario. Beyond his
educational commitments, he has also contributed to the fields of
cosmology, quantum gravity, particularly in the context of black

He has countless books and educational pieces of brilliance with works
of popular science. It is his theories and cosmology in general that
have allured most. His best seller A Brief History of Time did
something no other book has accomplished. This best seller stayed on
the British Sunday Times bestsellers list for a remarkable 237
weeks.

Some of his key works over his life include providing theorems
regarding gravitational singularities in the framework of general
relativity. In addition, he has contributed to the theoretical
prediction that black holes should emit radiation known as Hawking
radiation.

Despite having a motor neurone disease related to amyotrophic lateral
sclerosis, Stephen Hawking has managed to accomplish far more than anyone
could ever imagine. His condition that has progressed over the years
and left him virtually completely paralyzed has not stopped him from
producing record bestsellers. Most importantly, it has not slowed him
down from leaving a mark in history in the educational fields.
