This is the net movement of mass from one location

commonly meaning stream, phase or fraction element to another.

Mass transfer happens in many processes like absorption,

evaporation, adsorption and drying. Mass transport occurs when a particle

or element of a mixture passes to another spot cue to a variance in

concentration. Mass transfer is utilized by various scientific fields for

different processes and mechanisms. And the phrase usually appears in

engineering for physical processes which include molecular and convective

transport of atoms and molecules inside physical systems.

Mass transfer processes

Several known examples of mass transfer processes are the evaporation

of water from a pond to the atmosphere such as the diffusion of chemical

impurities in lakes, rivers and oceans from natural or man-made point

sources. In industrial processes mass transfer functions comprise

separation of chemical elements in distillation columns, adsorption and

absorption like in carbon filtration and in cooling towers where hot

water flows down over the fill material as air flows up in link with the

water, evaporating some of the water.

These functions typically comprise heat transfer as well. In the event

of cooling water, most of the heat is taken away by the air delivering

the latent heat taken away by evaporation of the water, plus reasonable

heat from the water is also transferred.

In the realm of chemical engineering its

applications

This mass transfer provides wide range of applications in chemical

engineering problems. It happens when a part of a mixture drift inside

the same phase or form phase to phase due to a dissimilarity in

concentration between two points. The urging force for mass

transfer is always a difference in concentration. Mass will

transfer from a region of high concentration to a region of low

concentration. For isolation processes thermodynamics decides the extent

of separation while mass transfer decides the rate at which isolation

will occur. The quantity of mass transfer rate can be quantified via

calculation and application of mass transfer coefficients.

In the sphere of astrophysics

In the field of astrophysics, mass transfer is the

process by which matter gravitationally bound to a body, commonly a star,

fills its Roche lobe and becomes gravitationally bound to second body,

commonly a compact object and is in due course accreted onto it. It is a

general phenomenon in binary systems and perhaps plays an essential role

in some kinds of supernovae and pulsars. And there are several types of

mass transfer such as convective mass transfer of which all play certain

role.
