Forward into the New Academic Year
As your new Chairman it is my privilege to welcome you all to the new academic year – 2010/2011. Our
new Committee is a strong one composed of four members from last year and four new members, all listed
overpage. We will always be pleased to hear from you on U3A matters. If you have any suggestions for new
Study groups and social events please contact me and I can assure they will be given full consideration in
With regard to Study Groups we seem to have arrived at a plateau with 46 Groups – the same as last year
though group numbers appear to be up. New ideas were explored but, except for a couple of new groups,
they were not successful in attracting sufficient interest. As Study Groups are the heart and soul of the U3A
this is an area we are planning to promote in the coming year.
From time to time I have heard members stating they wished there were more opportunities to meet and talk
to other members. In this context we are planning a luncheon, which, if successful, will be repeated..The
idea is to have a reasonable period for drinks, prior to the luncheon, so that members may mix freely.
As has been advertised the December lecture will be held at the Apex. This is very much a trial to determine,
from all viewpoints, if it is a more preferable venue than the Athenaeum, which, although charming, has
poor accoustics and limited capacity.
The Spring Network Symposium will be held in Stowupland School on May 21st and the same format as our
own Study Day has been adopted i.e. only four lectures – all in the same room. The theme will be
Celebrating Suffolk. Our Spring Study Day is currently being planned and we hope to release details in the
Newsletter later this month.
Our membership continues to grow, though more slowly. This, in itself, is probably a good thing in that,
should it grow much more, we might well be faced with restricting membership or splitting the Bury U3A.
I believe either choice to be unpalatable. Last year our total membership was just over 750 – about 20 more
than the previous year. I believe our U3A in Bury is in a very healthy state and we plan to keep it that way.

ANNUAL LUNCHEON & LECTURE - 18th JANUARY 2011
Due to an unacceptable rise in the cost, your committee has cancelled the luncheon.
However, the scheduled lecture i.e. A Solo Walk across Africa by the acclaimed author and
public speaker, Fran Sandham, will still take place at The Athenaeum at 10.00 (doors open
9.30) on Tuesday 18th January 2011. We look forward to seeing you all.
