MARATHON

Making the commitment to enter and prepare for any running race, whether it is a full marathon, half, 10km

or 5km event gives us the opportunity to extend ourselves beyond our everyday physical limits and achieve

something great.

We get few opportunities in our lives to really push ourselves, but today is one of those experiences, where we

challenge ourselves physically, mentally and emotionally.

A running event or race is not a sport that most of us enter to win. It’s an experience we commit to so we can

push ourselves beyond our normal boundaries - no matter whether this is your first or tenth event, that challenge

is the same.

Whatever your personal reasons for entering the 2011 adidas Auckland Marathon, or whatever your race is, I

congratulate you on your commitment and wish you the very best for the day.

DAVID HUGGETT

Country Manager - adidas New Zealand Ltd

EVENT INFORMATION

Distance: 42.195km

Start Time: 6.10am Sunday 30 October 2011

Start Location: King Edward Parade, Devonport, North Shore City, Auckland.

Finish Venue: Victoria Park, Fanshawe Street, Auckland City.

Course Description: The Marathon course runs from Devonport on Auckland’s North Shore, around the shopping

district of the North Shore, and then crosses the northern motorway before turning south to

the Harbour Bridge. After crossing the Harbour Bridge, the course takes in Westhaven Marina,

the Viaduct Harbour (the halfway mark), before heading out along Auckland City’s waterfront.

This section of the course is an out and back, with the turn point being in St Helier’s Bay. The

return leg follows the same course back to the Viaduct Harbour for a finish at Victoria Park.

Please note: All Full Marathon participants please ensure you use the Seaward lane only of

Tamaki Drive both out and back to complete the course correctly.

Course Map: For a full course map and street-by-street-description please visit the ‘Course Info & Maps’ page

of the event website, found under the ‘Event Information’ menu, or see map on penultimate page.

Course Changes: In the event of adverse weather or any other consideration forcing a course change, an alternative

Auckland City waterfront course will be provided where possible. Any known course change will be

advised on Mediaworks Radio stations and Newstalk ZB (89.4FM) from 5:00am. See Contingency

Plan for full detail.

Age Limit: 18 years of age or older on event day.

Age Categories: Male & Female: Open, 35-39yrs, 40-44yrs, 45-49yrs, 50-54yrs, 55-59yrs, 60-64yrs, 65-69yrs, 70-

74yrs, 75yrs +

Entry Transfers: Subject to transfer policy on the event website, participants can formally transfer their Marathon

entry to someone else up until 5:30pm Saturday 29 October. Entries may be formally transferred

upon the payment of a single $25.00 transfer fee. Transfers down in distance to the Half

Marathon are not possible. The timing software automatically disqualifies any Marathon

participant completing less than the full course. Entries transferred without permission of

the Organisers will be invalid and will lead to disqualification.

All transfer requests following 5pm Friday 21 October will not be processed unless presented for

processing at Registration on 27/28/29 October. Transfers should be made at Race Headquarters,

Registration & Expo, 161 Halsey Street, Auckland City on these dates. If transferring to another

person, you need to bring the e-ticket of the current entrant with you, a completed hard copy of the

entry form, along with your own personal photo identification e.g. drivers license. Please Note: due

to T-Shirts being printed to order transfers will not include a change of T-Shirt i.e. you will receive

the T-Shirt selected in the original entry.

Withdrawals: Entry fees are non-refundable after Friday 16 September 2011.

T-shirts: All participants will receive an adidas Climalite T-Shirt valued at $55.

Once ordered, a change in t-shirt size is not possible either before or after the event.

Race Pack Collection: All participants must collect their Race Pack & Race Items from Registration & Expo,

161 Halsey St, Auckland City (Viaduct Event Centre):

Thursday 27 October 12:00pm - 7:00pm

Friday 28 October 10:00am - 7:00pm

Saturday 29 October 10:00am - 5:30pm

Race numbers must be clearly worn on your front. Timing Chips (which are loaned to you) must be worn

on your shoe laces as per the diagram on the back of your race number.

Timing Chips: All participants will be issued with an IPICO timing chip when you pick up your Race Number at

Registration. You will need to take responsibility for your timing chip. There will be facilities

(Chip Check) available at race registration to check the timing chip is working and confirm that

critical database details are correct. On Race Day, the timing chip must be tied to your shoe

laces before you start and be worn on your shoe throughout the race and over the finish line. There

will be timing mats at the start line and at the finish line so that when you finish, the race timing

software will calculate your net time for your event. Please ensure you run OVER all timing mats

and not alongside them. Note: When you finish the race you must remove the timing chip from

your shoe and place it in the collection bags at the end of the finish chute. It is your responsibility

to return the timing chip via the collection bags in the finish chute before leaving the finish area.

All non-returned timing chips will be charged to you at $25.00 incl GST each. If you do not finish

the event, please ensure you return the timing chip to the Timing Chip Collection officials at the end

of the finish chute or mail it back to us at adidas Auckland Marathon, M129 Private Bag 300987,

Albany, Auckland.

Walkers: There is no competiton or prize category for walkers and therefore walkers are not scrutinized in any

of the adidas Auckland Marathon events. Walkers are allocated different bib colours and numbering

systems solely for starting purposes only. For safety reasons a separate start area has been established

for walkers behind the runners and this will be accessible to only those with the correct coloured race

number. Please utilise the separate walkers start area.

Wheelchairs, Cycles, Roller Blades, Prams/Buggies, Skate-Boards, Walking sticks

After careful consideration and in consultation with local authorities, due to considerable safety

and logistical concerns on the course, all forms of wheeled conveyance including but not limited

to wheelchairs, cycles, roller blades, prams/buggies, skate-boards etc are not permitted to enter or

participate in the event. For safety reasons alpine walking sticks or other forms of walking sticks

are also not permitted on the course. Single baby buggies only (not double or triple) will be allowed

in the 5km Walk (not Run) Event ONLY. The occupant of the baby buggy cannot walk in the event

and will not be charged an entry fee.

Cut Off Times: 9.00am for the 13km mark at entrance to the Auckland Harbour Bridge.

9.20am for any participant still on the Auckland Harbour Bridge (who will be transported to Sarsfield

St to continue the event).

1.00pm for any participant still on the course.

Prize Money: Merit Prize money is equal for men and women. Product prizes are offered in the Marathon and

Half-Marathon events for remaining places up to 10th place in the Open fields, and for the first

three in each 5-year age group starting with the age group 35-39 years.

First NZ$3,000 Fourth NZ$300

Second NZ$1,500 Fifth NZ$150

Third NZ$750

All prize money above $500 is subject to 20% resident withholding tax.

Please see waiver and release details regarding prizes when entering.

Elite Prize: THE TOP OF THE BRIDGE PRIME AWARDS recognise the first male and first female runners in the

full marathon to cross the top of the Auckland Harbour Bridge. This is approximately 15km from the

event start line at Devonport.

The top of the Auckland Harbour Bridge is defined as the official timing mats on the bridge for the

purposes of the awards and event officials will also be present at this point to adjudicate.

The two winning elite athletes will each receive a cash prize of $500 each. To be eligible for the

prize the runners must complete the full marathon distance.

Finishers: All Marathon event finishers will receive a medal with a neck ribbon at the finish. KIDS MARATHON

event finishers will also receive a KIDS MARATHON medal with neck ribbon. If you wish to receive

a printed A4 card certificate by mail, an additional $6.00 fee is payable with your entry fee.

Prizegiving: Will be held at 11:45am at Victoria Park for placegetters in the Marathon and Half Marathon

only. All age group merit prizes will be available from the Information Tent on Victoria Park from

11:45am (Marathon and Half Marathon only).

Spot Prizes: MINOR SPOT PRIZES - Spot prizes for all events will be drawn randomly and a list of all winners

will be available at the Registration & Expo at the Spot Prize area. Spot prizes must be collected

prior to 5:30pm Saturday 29 October. Prizes not collected by that time will be deemed forfeited by

the winner. To claim your minor spot prize you must present your valid race number at registration.

Getting to the Start: Due to traffic congestion on the North Shore from participants accessing the start line in Devonport,

we strongly recommend that you consider utilising the chartered pre-race services of the Ferry or

Bus to get to the Marathon and Half Marathon start. Should you choose to use your own vehicle

to get to the start, please allow plenty of time, and remember there is minimal public parking for

participants in Devonport.

FERRY TRANSPORT TO THE START

• Due to the pre-race ferry sailings being a chartered service and the need to ensure boarding is

as efficient as possible, a different ticket system (wristband) is used for these sailings.

• Because of this and the pressure to process 7,000 people onto the ferries in a limited time NO

OTHER FULLERS ISSUED TICKETS WILL BE ACCEPTED FOR THESE SAILINGS. Please purchase your

unique charter ticket (wristband) when entering the event or from Registration if not sold out prior.

• Tickets are $7.00 each and limited to 7,000 passengers travelling from Auckland City or

Birkenhead/Bayswater across to Devonport and will be sold on a first come first served basis.

• Wristband tickets are only valid for the event day pre-race sailings. You CANNOT use

your wristband to return to Devonport after the event. You will need to purchase a standard

Fullers ticket for this purpose.

• Supporters tickets (there and back) are also available for purchase online or by paper entry as

well (see below) for $14.00 each.

• Ferry and Bus tickets purchased are non-refundable so please choose carefully.

IMPORTANT NOTE ABOUT FERRY SAILINGS: Last year saw a large number of Half Marathon

participants arrive to catch ferries from 6am and after which resulted in the earlier ferries being

empty and all ferry sailings after that not being able to cater for the numbers waiting. All

Marathon participants please ensure you arrive in time to catch the 4.30am ferry sailing,

or no later than 5.10am sailings for your best chance to make the start line on time.

There are no guarantees that you will arrive in time for the start, particularly if you catch

later ferries.

Supporters Return Ferry Tickets:

Participants can purchase Supporters Tickets for $14.00 each when completing their online/paper

entry form. The supporter receives a wrist band to take them on the pre-race sailing from Auckland

City or Birkenhead/Bayswater to Devonport, and a standard ticket for each supporter to return back

to Auckland City after the start. The return ferry will leave on a 7.00am (sharp) chartered sailing

after the start back to Auckland City.

Toilets: Toilet facilities at the Marathon/Half Marathon Start will be the same as last year. Urinals for

men will be available at the Marathon and Half Marathon Start to assist with waiting times. The

of a medical emergency, dial 111 from the nearest phone and the closest ambulance will be sent

to your aid. If you have a medical condition that could cause you difficulties during or after the race,

please first get clearance from your doctor to participate in your event before entering.

Note: Please remember to complete the section on the back of your race number with your

name, any medical conditions and importantly a contact name and phone number (other

than your own) in case of emergency.

For your safety, it is advised that you do not participate in the event if you have had a fever or cold

in the past week, or have a hangover, as these can contribute towards heat exhaustion, dehydration,

or life threatening heatstroke.

cannot guarantee that these will be delivered in the correct order. All personal refreshments

must be clearly labeled and delivered to Race Headquarters, Registration & Expo, 161 Halsey

Street, Auckland City during opening hours and prior to 5:30pm Saturday 29 October.

Safety Information: While the Event Organisers have taken every reasonable measure to ensure your safety, as a

participant of the adidas Auckland Marathon, Half Marathon, Quarter Marathon, 5km Run & Walk

or KIDS MARATHON, you are responsible for your own safety and enter this event at your own

risk.

Safety has been at the forefront of our planning. Not only the safety of participants, but also

the safety of our marshals and the public, with considerable planning being undertaken in

association with the relevant local authorities and NZ Police.

It is important that you read the following Safety message in conjunction with your Waiver

and Release Declaration and adhere to each of the safety guidelines of the event:

• The course that you will run along consists of public roads.

• These roads are not closed to vehicular traffic. Please treat all roads as OPEN to all traffic

at all times.

• Where possible a coned lane has been provided for you to run in.

• At all times you must remain within the coned lane.

• Participants that persist in running outside the coned lane will be removed from the event for their

own safety and the safety of the public.

• Please be aware of vehicles exiting from driveways, business addresses and side streets along

the course.

• At all intersections or changes in the course a marshal, and where necessary, a Police Officer will

be stationed.

• If you are instructed to stop anywhere along the course by either a marshal or a Police Officer to

allow traffic to cross the course you must obey this request.

• When crossing the Auckland Harbour Bridge you must at all times remain in the right hand

(outside) lane.

• If you have a medical condition that may require attention please ensure you have your doctor’s

clearance before entering this event.

• Please complete the section on the back of your race number with your name, any medical

conditions, and importantly, a contact name and phone number (someone other than yourself that

will be contactable on the day) in case of emergency.

• Support Stations are located at approximately 4km to 5 km intervals and these have hydration

refreshments, portaloos and minor first aid support.

• At all times please obey the instructions of marshals and Police Officers and beware of

vehicular traffic.

• Any participant who fails to obey the instructions of either a marshal or the Police will be removed

from the event.

• Please obey all traffic laws and regulations at all times.

Public Roads: The event is run on public roads and while we have permission to close all or parts of those

roads, there are certain time restrictions after which participants will be required to continue

the event on the footpath or, for safety reasons, they will be removed from the course.

The following time restrictions will apply for the 2011 event:

• 7.45am King Edward Parade through to Lake Road

• 8.15am Lake Road and Bracken Ave

• 11.30am Halsey Street, the Viaduct Harbour Drive, Custom Street West, Quay Street, Tamaki Drive.

• 1.00pm Any runner remaining on the course will be removed.

For your safety, if you are advised by an Event Official, Marshal or a member of the Police,

please immediately move onto the footpath to continue the event. Any participant who continues

to run on the road after being requested to move onto the footpath will be removed from the

event. Participants should not assume a road is closed and should always run on the footpath

unless it is obvious that it is safe to do otherwise.

EVENT SAFETY FOR FULL DETAILS PLEASE ENSURE YOU READ THE ‘RACE & SAFETY INFORMATION’ PAGE OF

THE EVENT WEBSITE FOUND IN THE “EVENT INFORMATION” MENU ON THE EVENT WEBSITE:

Auckland Tourism, Events and Economic Development is proud to sponsor the adidas

Auckland Marathon, an iconic Auckland event. As Auckland’s and New Zealand’s premier

road race, the event brings significant economic benefit and international profile to the

city. Every year thousands of local and international competitors get to cross the

Auckland Harbour Bridge and take in a spectacular view of Auckland.

CONTINGENCY PLAN - Bridge Closure

In the event that the Auckland Harbour Bridge is closed for the running of the adidas Auckland Marathon or Half

Marathon or some other unforeseen event or matter requires a change to the course or event, or the cancellation

or cessation (i.e. stopping) of the event, the Race Organising Committee will adopt the following procedures to

provide an alternative course, where possible, for the event, or, alternatively upon cancellation or cessation, assist

participants to be returned to Victoria Park.

The trigger for implementing one of the two contingency plans will be:

1. The Race Director being advised by the relevant authorities that the weather conditions or some other factor

or matter makes it unsafe for runners to cross the Harbour Bridge. This decision will be made around 4:00am

on Event Day. In the event of this scenario then the Contingency course will be implemented

2. Events or circumstances that lead to the closure of the bridge to participants after 5:00am on Event Day or

some other event or matter that closes all or part of the course. In the event of this scenario it will necessitate

the cancellation or cessation of the marathon and half marathon events

Contingency Plan 1: Bridge Closure before 5.00am - alternative course

1. Fuller’s Ferries notified that they are not to transport participants from Auckland to Devonport

2. Participants waiting at the ferries to be advised to go to Victoria Park

3. Ritchies Buses will be advised to transport all runners to Victoria Park

4. Participants waiting at the start and arriving at the start to be advised to go to Victoria Park

5. Radio stations notified to broadcast prepared announcement regarding the move to the contingency course.

Stations to tune in to are:

• More FM - 91.8FM • The Edge - 94.2FM

• The Breeze - 93.4FM • Solid Gold - 93.8FM

• Radio Live - 100.6FM • Kiwi - 102.2FM

• NewsTalkZB - 89.4FM

6. An ‘All Participants’ briefing to be held at Victoria Park at 6.00am and again at 6.30am

7. At 6.30am the Course Director will confirm with Traffic Management and Police that the contingency course is

fully implemented

8. The Race Director will, on confirmation that the course is ready, confirm start times for the Marathon, Half

Marathon, Quarter Marathon, and 5km Run & Walk events

THE CONTINGENCY COURSE

The contingency course will, more or less, follow the planned second half of the Marathon course with the exception

of the following changes:

• The Start for all events will be on Gaunt Street between Halsey and Beaumont Streets.

• The Start will be broken into 3 waves, the Quarter Marathon event, the 5km Run & Walk event and all other

events. The 5km Run & Walk event start will be as originally scheduled (9.45am). The first wave will start no later

than 7.00am and be for all half and full marathon participants. The Quarter Marathon event will start

approximately 15min later.

• The Marathon event will follow the second half of the original Marathon course out to the St Heliers turn around

and return to a turn point on Customs St West then head back out to St Heliers before returning to the finish on

Fanshawe Street.

• The Half Marathon event will follow the Marathon course out to the St Heliers turn around and return to the

finish on Fanshawe Street.

• There is no change to the Quarter Marathon event.

• The 5km Run & Walk event will also follow the water front course to a turn at around Tinley Street.

Note: The fact that all events are on the same course will require marshals to ensure that the slower participants

do not unreasonably impede the faster runners that will invariably be coming through. Slower participants should

obey marshals instructions at all times.

Contingency Plan 2: Notice of Bridge Closure or other event after 5.00am - Partial Cancellation of event

1. Notify Fuller’s ferries:

• To Stop further sailing (if early enough) or;

• That ferries may be required to transport participants from Devonport to Auckland or, possibly, Fisherman’s

Wharf to Auckland

2. Participants waiting at the ferries to be advised to go to Victoria Park

3. Ritchies buses will be advised to transport all runners to Victoria Park

4. Participants waiting at the start and to be advised to go to Victoria Park

5. Notify radio stations to broadcast prepared announcement regarding the move to the contingency course. The

stations to tune in to are:

• More FM - 91.8FM

• The Breeze - 93.4FM

• Radio Live - 100.6FM

• The Edge - 94.2FM

• Solid Gold - 93.8FM

• Kiwi - 102.2FM

• NewsTalkZB - 89.4FM

6. Stafford Road course personnel advised to hold all runners in adjacent park pending announcement from

Race Director (if closure occurs after scheduled start of the Event)

7. A ‘Participants’ briefing to be held at Stafford Road Park at 7.30am and again at 8.30am (if closure occurs after

scheduled start of the Event), or at Victoria Park if closure occurs before scheduled start of the Event

8. In the event of Bridge closure only, the Quarter Marathon and 5km Run & Walk events will start on schedule
