eTAT: Walkthrough for creating Google Code Project and Google Group for your Student Groups.
Step 1 – Create Google Code Project:
1. Go to this link: http://code.google.com/hosting/createProject
2. Enter the project name. This is your unique project identifier on Google Code. Some examples
of naming student project groups are ‘csc848-group1’, ‘-group1’ and so on.
3. Select your subversion control system. We recommend using this system because all our
testing has been carried out using the SVN version control system.
4. Select your Source code license according to your requirements.
5. Click on create project.
After this step you have created a Google Code project for one of your student groups. Repeat
step 1 for all your student groups in the similar manner.
Step 2 – Create Google Group:
You will need to create corresponding Google Groups pages for each of the Google Code Projects that
you created in Step 1. To do this, follow the steps below:
1. Go to this link: http://groups.google.com/groups/create
2. Enter the name of your Google Group. Try to keep it the same as your Google Code Project, if
possible. This will save a lot of confusion later on.
3. Enter your Google Group email address. You will be using this email address for communication
through Google Groups. We recommend that you keep it the same as your Group Name.
4. Click the Create my group button.
5. Enter the Gmail addresses of the same students from the corresponding Google Code Project to
this group.
6. Write an invitation message (optional).
7. Click the Invite members button.
Step 3 – Modify Google Code Project Settings:
For the sake of demonstration, we have created a project called ppm-2 (in Step 1) and a group called
ppm-2 (in Step 2). Let’s consider this as the project name for Group 2 in the PPM course.
After completing Step 1, you will be taken to the home page of your project (as shown below).
1. Click on the Administer tab (highlighted in the above image).
2. Click in Project Members tab in the Administer section.
3. Enter the Gmail addresses of all the students that belong to that group.
4. Click on Save changes.
5. Click on the Source tab in Administer section.
6. Go down till the Activity notifications field and enter the email address you created for the
corresponding Google Group, for this project. In our case, we created ppm-2 Google Code Project
and ppm-2 Google Group (with its email address as ppm-2@googlegroups.com). So we enter the
email address from that Google Group.
After these steps are completed, you will have successfully created a Google Code Project and Google
Group for ONE student group in your course. You can repeat the same steps for all such student
groups that you decide to make over the course of your class.
