Great Lakes Maritime Teacher Institute in Door County, WI
June 20-24, 2011, Sturgeon Bay, WI
Explore the historical, economical and environmental aspects of shipping on the Great Lakes while enjoying
the special ambience of Door County, Wisconsin. Participants will tour port facilities and the Neville Public
Museum in Green Bay, the Wisconsin Maritime Museum and S.S. Badger in Manitowoc, several lighthouses in
Door County, and an active shipyard in Sturgeon Bay. Investigate invasive species, monitor water quality, take
a guided excursion of Sturgeon Bay ship canal, delve into maritime history and learn about maritime careers.
Participants will gain new knowledge, skills, and resources that can be integrated into social studies, science,
language arts, and math classes.
Cost: $495 registration includes 2 graduate credits, meals, and 4 nights lodging at Bridgeport Resort. To

Using Navigation to Teach Mathematics
June 27- July 1, 2011, Houghton, MI
Explore innovative ways to teach geometry, measurement, and algebra through the practice of marine
navigation. Teachers will learn navigation techniques via daily hands-on experiences aboard Michigan Tech’s
Research Vessel, Agassiz, and become proficient in solving navigation problems using mathematics, charts,
and electronic instruments.
Cost: $300 registration off-campus includes 2 credits, navigation textbook, two charts, and instruments) or

Grants from the Great Lakes Maritime Research Institute and from CFIRE at University of Wisconsin-Madison help reduce the cost of
Michigan Tech official graduate credit (2010-11 official Michigan Tech Applied Science Education Graduate Tuition for Residents and
Non-Residents is $431 per credit.
All applicants to the Great Lakes Maritime Institute may apply for a $300 stipend, if no other funding is .
Michigan applicants who teach grades 4-10 may apply for a COSEE Great Lakes Marine Immersion scholarship by contacting Steve
