NEEDED
LESSON The quickest way to success is by setting goals. The process of goal setting is motivational. The power
SUMMARY behind success is the ability to be able to verbalize your dreams and desires and write them down in a
usable form.
LESSON Make sure SmartBoard is turned on for PowerPoint.
PREPARATION
Essential What is a goal and how can goals help us? What are the goals that lead to learner success?

PROCEDURES Discuss 2 expressions and “The Tortoise and the Hare.” What was the goal of the tortoise? What was the
goal of the hare? Why do you think the tortoise accomplished his goal and the hare did not?
What are goals that fifth graders might have that would result in a productive and pleasurable school year?
Use PowerPoint to explain SMART goals.
Distribute SMART handout for all students to complete.
EVALUATION Handout completed with a goal meeting the SMART criteria and at least one clear strategy to meet the goal.

There will be a significant increase in fifth graders who indicate the importance of writing goals and plans on
the Grade 5 post-assessment vs. pre-assessment. (A pre-assessment is administered in early September
and a post-assessment is administered just before Thanksgiving after 10 lessons.)

__% of fifth graders wrote a SMART goal with a reasonable plan for achieving the goal.
